The consequences of congenital brain disorders for adult cognitive function are poorly understood. We studied different forms of memory in 29 young adults with spina bifida meningomyelocele (SBM), a common and severely disabling neural tube defect. Nondeclarative and semantic memory functions were intact. Working memory was intact with low maintenance and manipulation requirements, but impaired on tasks demanding high information maintenance or manipulation load. Prospective memory for intentions to be executed in the future was impaired. Immediate and delayed episodic memory were poor. Memory

Bilingualism has been proposed to confer advantages in cognitive aging, yet the neural mechanisms underlying any such advantages remain debated. In a pre-registered analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal data from elders in the HABS-HD cohort, we asked whether bilingualism is associated with three measures of brain structure (total brain volume, hippocampal volume and white-matter lesions) and/or moderates the relationship between brain structure and two measures of cognition (executive function and episodic memory). Overall, we found no significant differences between bilinguals and mon

BackgroundDistinguishing Alzheimer's disease (AD) from frontotemporal dementia (FTD) remains a major clinical challenge, particularly in early disease stages due to overlapping symptoms. Although neuropsychological assessment is central to diagnosis, brief cognitive screening instruments often emphasize episodic memory, whereas comprehensive neuropsychological assessment encompasses multiple cognitive domains. Nevertheless, social cognition and other relevant functions may remain underrepresented in routine clinical assessment.ObjectiveTo identify neuropsychological domains and test procedures

INTRODUCTION: People with Down syndrome (DS) have a 75% to 90% lifetime risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD pathology begins a decade or more prior to onset of clinical AD dementia in people with DS. It is not clear if plasma biomarkers of AD pathology are correlated with early cognitive and functional impairments in DS, and if these biomarkers could be used to track the early stages of AD in DS or to inform inclusion criteria for clinical AD treatment trials.
METHODS: This large cross-sectional cohort study investigated the associations between plasma biomarkers of amyloid beta (Aβ)42/40, t

Memory plays a crucial role in human cognitive processes and daily functioning. While memory has a genetic basis, identifying the specific genetic factors influencing memory performance has proven challenging. This challenge arises because memory is a complex trait, whose genetic architecture likely comprises an accumulation of many low-effect size common variants. Thus, study sample sizes are easily insufficient, leading to underpowered genetic association analyses. This limitation is especially pronounced in studies that prioritize deep phenotyping over broader recruitment, resulting in smal

Recalling either a specific (unique, 24 h or less) turning point memory narrative or a turning point with greater episodic detail (who, when, where and what happened) has been shown to predict higher youth depressive symptoms. The current research with emerging adults (N = 195, M = 20.5 years), therefore examined first the relationships of specific and detailed turning points with depressive symptoms, and second, whether recollective memory qualities moderated the association. We hypothesised that both a specific turning point and greater episodic detail would each predict depressive symptoms

INTRODUCTION: The apolipoprotein E (ApoE) ε4 allele is a key genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease, but its effects may differ by heritage. We examined how ApoE4 influences hippocampal volume, episodic memory, and clinical syndrome across race and ethnicity (ethnoracial) groups.
METHODS: We analyzed 946 participants with the ApoE genotype, clinical diagnosis, and magnetic resonance imaging scans. Regression and structural equation modeling tested ApoE4's impact on cognition and whether an ethnoracial group consisting of 486 White, 234 Black/African American, or 226 Hispanic/Latino individuals

Blood-brain barrier disruption (BBBd) occurs in aging, particularly in regions vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. However, its relationship to pathological protein accumulation, neurodegeneration, and cognitive impairment in normal aging is unclear. We used dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging in cognitively normal older adults to explore how BBBd correlates with brain atrophy and cognitive function, and whether these relationships are influenced by Aβ or tau. We found that greater BBBd in the hippocampus (HC) and an averaged BBB

The relationship between tau deposition and cognitive decline in cognitively healthy older adults is still unclear. The tau PET tracer 18F-MK-6240 has shown favorable imaging characteristics to identify early tau deposition in aging. We evaluated the relationship between in vivo tau levels (18F-MK-6240) and retrospective cognitive change over 5 years in episodic memory, processing speed, and reasoning. For tau quantification, a set of regions of interest (ROIs) was selected a priori based on previous literature: (1) total-ROI comprising selected areas, (2) medial temporal lobe-ROI, and (3) lat

The hippocampus is important for autobiographical memory, but its role is unclear. In the study, patients with hippocampal damage and controls were taken on a 25-min walk on the University of California, San Diego, campus during which 11 planned events occurred. Memory was tested directly after the walk. In addition, a second group of controls took the same walk and were tested after 1 mo. Patients with hippocampal damage remembered fewer details than controls tested directly after the walk but remembered a similar number of details as controls tested after 1 mo. Notably, the details that were

Despite the marked impairment of recent episodic memories in Alzheimer's disease, there have been few attempts to rehabilitate these deficits. We used a novel external memory aid to promote recall of episodic memories in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. SenseCam, a small wearable camera, recorded significant events in the lives of six Alzheimer's disease patients. Every two days for two weeks each patient's memory for an event was assessed, followed by a structured review of the SenseCam images. Longer-term recall was tested one and three months later. A written diary contro

PURPOSE: Moyamoya disease is characterized by progressive narrowing of bilateral internal carotid arteries. Neuropsychological impairments are suspected due to frequent involvement of the frontotemporal areas. The present study thus aimed to investigate the pattern of neuropsychological function in children diagnosed with moyamoya disease.
METHODS: Thirteen children with moyamoya disease of the transient ischemic attack type received standardized neuropsychological tests that evaluate general intellectual function, verbal comprehension, perceptual organization, working memory, processing spee

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic hypotension is common in Lewy body disorders and may be related to disease progression and the spread of Lewy body pathology. We therefore hypothesize that PD patients with orthostatic hypotension (OH) have a different cognitive profile compared to PD patients without OH.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 175 PD patients. Blood pressure (BP) was measured with a validated digital blood pressure monitor and patients with a systolic BP drop of > or =20 mmHg or a systolic pressure of <90 mm Hg after standing were considered to have OH. Cognition was assessed usi

OBJECTIVE: Episodic memory impairment and underlying pathophysiology in Parkinson's Disease (PD) is poorly investigated. Formerly, it was thought to be a secondary effect of impairment in fronto-striatal circuit. However, recent studies hypothesized that there is a dual progression of PD and memory loss is possibly related to posterior cortex rather than frontal. To understand the impairment, underlying mechanisms should be investigated. Although consolidation is one of these mechanisms consolidation phase of episodic memory in PD was not investigated yet. Recently accelerated long term forget

Subjective memory complaints (SMC), the main cognitive component of which is event memory, is a predictor of Alzheimer's disease in elderly people. The purpose of this trial was to investigate the effect of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) with theta frequency (6 Hz) on the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in the improvement of episodic memory in individuals with SMC in a double blind, randomized, and sham-controlled parallel study. Sixteen participants with SMC received either active or sham theta tACS on the mPFC. EEG was recorded, and Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAV

The basal forebrain is one of the three major brain circuits involved in episodic memory formation together with the hippocampus and the diencephalon. The dysfunction of each of these regions is known to cause anterograde amnesia. While the hippocampal pyramidal neurons are known to encode episodic information and the diencephalic structures are known to provide idiothetic information, the contribution of the basal forebrain to memory formation has been exclusively associated with septo-hippocampal cholinergic signaling. Research data from the last decade broadened our understanding about the

Recent reports in human demonstrate a role of theta-gamma coupling in memory for spatial episodes and a lack of coupling in people experiencing temporal lobe epilepsy, but the mechanisms are unknown. Using multisite silicon probe recordings of epileptic rats engaged in episodic-like object recognition tasks, we sought to evaluate the role of theta-gamma coupling in the absence of epileptiform activities. Our data reveal a specific association between theta-gamma (30-60 Hz) coupling at the proximal stratum radiatum of CA1 and spatial memory deficits. We targeted the microcircuit mechanisms with

OBJECTIVE: Although abnormal hippocampal structure and impaired spatial memory have been revealed in a pilocarpine rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), the brain functional network changes are still unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes of brain functional connectivity related to the hippocampus and the associated memory impairment in a pilocarpine model of TLE.
METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging signals were recorded in pilocarpine-treated rats and controls by using a 7.0 T magnetic resonance scanner, and independent component analysis was per

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have suggested that patients suffering from either anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) exhibit abnormal performance in the ability to control cognitive interference in response selection.
METHOD: We assessed the status of cognitive control in episodic memory by addressing the ability to inhibit interfering memories. To this end, we used the retrieval-practice paradigm, which allows for measuring both the beneficial and the detrimental effects of memory practice. The latter phenomenon, known as retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF), is thought to reflect an
