Fluency in semantic coherence detection: Insights from response times, confidence, and eye movements.

This research investigated whether different sources of processing fluency equivalently shape intuitive semantic judgments and their underlying attentional mechanisms. Across two eye-tracking experiments (Ns = 39, 45), participants performed a Dyads of Triads task to identify coherent word sets. We manipulated emotional valence as a semantic fluency source (Study 1) and visual contrast as a perceptual fluency source (Study 2). In both studies, objective accuracy was at a high ceiling (>86%) and unaffected by our manipulations. However, subjective experience was sensitive to fluency. Positive e

Assessment of neurotransmitter-related structural brain changes in borderline personality disorder: an MRI study.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by grey matter (GM) alterations in areas related to emotion regulation, impulsivity and metacognitive abilities. Dysfunction of specific neurotransmitters, including serotoninergic and dopaminergic systems, is thought to be involved, but evidence is currently limited. In this exploratory study, we tested for associations between GM alterations in BPD, the spatial distribution of neurotransmitter systems, and clinical features in a sample of 58 patients with BPD and 28 healthy controls (HC). GM volume alterations were assessed on 3T MRI usi

Development and validation of the Self-Awareness of Ego-Threatening Biases Questionnaire (SAETBQ).

Awareness of social biases is crucial as they impact both individual behavior and societal outcomes. Whereas previous research indicates that self-awareness of ego-nonthreatening biases enhances self-regulation, the effects of self-awareness of ego-threatening biases remain underexplored. Preliminary findings suggest that awareness of ego-threatening biases related to rumination may lead to maladaptive states. However, these findings await replication with standardized instruments. To address this gap, we conducted two studies. In Study 1 (N = 1609), we developed and validated the 12-item Self

State of clinical AI in 2026.

Clinical artificial intelligence (AI) has advanced rapidly, with frontier large language models now matching or exceeding physician performance on simulated diagnostic reasoning and clinical decision-support tasks. Yet adoption has outpaced the evidence base: fewer than 5% of cleared U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) AI/machine learning (ML) devices have undergone peer-reviewed evaluation and prospective randomised trials remain scarce. This narrative review synthesises evidence from ARISE's State of Clinical AI Report 2026 across six domains: model performance and human benchmarking, ev

Simulated self-assessment in large language models: A psychometric approach to AI self-efficacy.

Large language models (LLMs) are frequently perceived to have human-like comprehension capabilities. However, their proficiency in evaluating and quantifying these capacities remains uncertain. We conducted a controlled psychometric measurement study adapting the 10-item General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) to evaluate simulated self-assessment across 10 contemporary LLMs. Models completed the GSES under a no-task control condition and after three task-priming conditions: computational reasoning, social reasoning, and summarization. We examined between-model variation, task versus no-task differ

Subclinical Scores in Self-Report Based Screening Tools for Attention Deficits Correlate With Cognitive Traits in Typical Evening-Type Adults Tested in the Morning.

Previous studies suggest that in adolescents and young adults, evening chronotype is a subclinical factor in physical, cognitive, and psychiatric fitness; poor sleep habits and larger misalignment with the social schedule constraints may exacerbate symptoms of inattention, impulsivity and the risks for detrimental behaviors. The influence of chronotype on neurocognitive performance during morning hours and scores in self-reports about attention deficit symptoms (ADS) and executive functioning, was explored in 42 healthy young university students (29 women), divided to evening type (ET) and com

Monitoring neurocognitive functioning in childhood cancer survivors: evaluation of CogState computerized assessment and the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF).

BACKGROUND: Many childhood cancer survivors develop neurocognitive impairment, negatively affecting education and psychosocial functioning. Recommended comprehensive neuropsychological testing can be time- and cost- intensive for both institutions and patients and their families. It is important to find quick and easily administered surveillance measures to identify those in need of evaluation. METHODS: We evaluated, individually and in combination, the sensitivity and specificity of the 1) Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning-Metacognition Index (BRIEF-MCI), and 2) CogState Com

Characterization of inflammatory and neurofunctional markers in the context of early life stress among a clinical sample of people maintained on buprenorphine for opioid use disorder.

Early life stress (ELS) is associated with an increase in expression of inflammatory cytokines and opioid addiction-related behaviors. Maintenance on medication for opioid use disorder (OUD) can opposingly affect these endpoints. The study aimed to determine whether a history of ELS is associated with a distinct inflammatory and/or neurofunctional phenotype within a population of individuals maintained on buprenorphine for OUD. In this secondary analysis of 21 adults (16M/5F), High and Low ELS groups were determined by number of items endorsed on the Trauma History Questionnaire occurring befo

Intraindividual variability, subjective cognitive difficulties, and head injury history in former collegiate athletes.

Objectives: The association between head injury history and subjective cognitive symptoms among contact sport athletes has been frequently reported, but links between head injury history and performance-based measures have been more variable. Dispersion-based intraindividual variability (IIV) may better align with subjective cognitive concerns and be a more sensitive measure of subtle head injury-related changes. This study investigated the associations among IIV, subjective cognitive symptoms, and head injury history. Methods: Former collegiate football players (N = 57 included in analyses; a

Executive function impairment is associated with low serum vitamin D levels in children with epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Executive function (EF) impairment and vitamin D deficiency are common clinical features among children with epilepsy (CWE). Recently, vitamin D has become a potential modification factor that affects cognitive status in individuals with neurological disorders. In this study, we investigated the association between EF status and vitamin D levels in patients with CWE. METHODS: In total, 79 CWE patients and 39 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited in this study. Each participant's EF was assessed using the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Parent form (Brief-P), and the s

Development and clinical feasibility study of a brief version of an addiction-focused phenotyping battery in females receiving buprenorphine for opioid use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to streamline the NIDA Phenotyping Assessment Battery (PhAB), a package of self-report scales and neurobehavioral tasks used in substance use disorder (SUD) clinical trials, for clinical administration ease. Tailoring the PhAB to shorten administration time for a treatment setting is critical to expanding its acceptability in SUD clinical trials. This study's primary objectives were to develop a brief version of PhAB (PhAB-B) and assess its operational feasibility and acceptability in a female clinical treatment sample. METHODS: Assessments of the original PhAB were eva

Brain activation during self- and other-reflection in bipolar disorder with a history of psychosis: Comparison to schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES: Reflecting on the self and on others activates specific brain areas and contributes to metacognition and social cognition. The aim of the current study is to investigate brain activation during self- and other-reflection in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). In addition, we examined whether potential abnormal brain activation in BD patients could distinguish BD from patients with schizophrenia (SZ). METHODS: During functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), 17 BD patients, 17 SZ patients and 21 healthy controls (HCs) performed a self-reflection task. The task consisted of sen

Abnormalities in orbitofrontal cortex gyrification and mental health outcomes in adolescents born extremely preterm and/or at an extremely low birth weight.

Extremely preterm (EP, <28 weeks) and/or extremely low birth weight (ELBW, <1000 g) infants are at high risk of aberrant neurodevelopment. Sulcogyral folding patterns of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) are determined during the third trimester, however little is known about OFC patterning in EP/ELBW cohorts, for whom this gestational period is disturbed. This study investigated whether the distribution of OFC pattern types and frequency of intermediate and/or posterior orbital sulci (IOS/POS) differed between EP/ELBW and control adolescents. This study also investigated whether OFC pattern type

Long-Term Effects of Mobile-Based Metamemory Cognitive Training in Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment: 15-Month Prospective Single-Arm Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediate state between normal aging and dementia, characterized by subjective cognitive decline and objective memory impairment. Cognitive training has consistently shown short-term benefits for individuals with MCI, but evidence on the long-term effectiveness is extremely limited. Given the progressive nature of MCI and the need for sustainable strategies to delay cognitive decline, research on the long-term impact of cognitive training is necessary and timely. Mobile-based platforms offer a promising solution by enhancing accessibility an

Peri-Personal Space Tracing by Hand-Blink Reflex Modulation in Patients with Chronic Disorders of Consciousness.

The assessment of awareness in patients with chronic Disorders of Consciousness (DoC), including Unresponsive Wakefulness Syndrome (UWS) and Minimally Conscious State (MCS), is challenging. The level of awareness impairment may depend on the degree of deterioration of the large-scale cortical-thalamo-cortical networks induced by brain injury. Electrophysiological approaches may shed light on awareness presence in patients with DoC by estimating cortical functions related to the cortical-thalamo-cortical networks including, for example, the cortico-subcortical processes generating motor respons

Congruence and discrepancy between self-rated and clinician-rated symptom severity on the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) before and after a low-intensity intervention.

The Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) is the most common measure of Obsessive-Compulsive symptom severity. The Y-BOCS interview is considered gold standard, but its self-rating format is increasingly used in clinical trials. Few studies investigated congruency and potential changes over treatment. This question is highly relevant, as a systematic bias might obscure results of clinical trials. We examined the relationship of self- and clinician-rated Y-BOCS scores in participants with obsessive-compulsive disorder in pre (N = 128), post, (4 weeks, n = 104) and follow-up (6 months,
