The effect of operative factors on outlier ion levels in patients with metal-on-metal hip arthroplasties.

UNLABELLED: Metal-on-metal (MoM) hip arthroplasties comprised of cobalt and chromium alloys continue to be successful alternatives to conventional bearings in younger patients with osteoarthritis (OA). A small proportion of patients have unusually high levels of cobalt and chromium ions postoperatively. Given the increasing prevalence of MoM bearings and the potential for cellular toxicity, the purpose of our study was to determine whether patient or surgical factors could account for abnormally elevated ion levels following MoM hip arthroplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cobalt and chromium lev

A wavelength demultiplexing structure based on metal-dielectric-metal plasmonic nano-capillary resonators.

A structure based on plasmonic nano-capillary resonators for optical wavelengths demultiplexing is proposed and numerically investigated. The structure consists of main/bus waveguide connected with series of nano-capillary resonators, each of which tuned at different wavelength transmission band. A model based on resonator theory is given to design the working wavelength of the structure. Both analytical and simulation results reveal that the demultiplexing wavelength of each channel has linear and nonlinear relationships with length and width of the nano-capillary structure.

Metal-on-metal bearings total hip arthroplasty: the cobalt and chromium ions release concern.

With certain concerns recently reported on metal-on-metal bearing couples in total hip arthroplasty, this study's objective is to review the current knowledge concerning release of metal ions and its potential consequences. Each metal-on-metal implant presents different tribological properties. The analytical techniques for metals are accurate and the Co ion rates seem acceptable up to 2 μg/L. A delayed type IV hypersensitivity reaction (atypical lymphocytic vasculitis-associated lesion [ALVAL]) may be the source of arthroplasty failure. Idiosyncratic, it remains unpredictable even using cutan…

Metal-on-metal hip resurfacing in patients with pigmented villonodular synovitis: a report of two cases.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) of the hip joint is a rare and benign tumor of the synovia. This local, aggressive, proliferative disorder of the joint synovial membrane can lead to secondary osteoarthritis and represents a small percentage of all patients undergoing total hip replacement (THR). Because of the usually young age of the patients undergoing THR for PVNS, a resurfacing arthroplasty of the hip appears as a beneficial treatment option due to its bone-conserving nature, good joint stability, and ability to easily convert to a THR if needed. This article describes 2 cases of m

Metal-on-metal total hip joint replacement: a minimum follow-up of five years.

UNLABELLED: The search for an ideal bearing surface for hip arthroplasty is ongoing. Over 1000 metal-on-metal total hip replacements have been performed at our institution since 1993. A review of 215 primary hip arthroplasties performed using Metasul (Sulzer, Winterthur, Switzerland) metal-on-metal articulation with a minimum follow-up of five years is presented. Six patients were lost to follow-up, leaving 209 hips for review. The average follow-up was 7.33 years (range 5-11.4 years). The mean preoperative Harris Hip Score (HHS) was 39.8 and mean postoperative hip scores rose to 89.5, 87.3, 8

Novel hypervalent complexes of main-group metals by intramolecular ligand-->metal electron transfer.

New fascinating electronic features of the simple diketoamine chelate ligand HN[CH2C(tBu)=O]2 (1) are described. Unexpectedly, the corresponding trianionic amido-dienolate form of 1 is capable of reducing main-group metal atoms M after initial coordination and intramolecular L-->M two-electron transfer and of stabilizing main-group elements in unusual low oxidation states. This is impressively shown by the synthesis and structural characterization of the novel Ge and Sn complexes 4-6 by redox reactions of lithiated 1 with the corresponding metal halides GeCl4 and MCl2 (M=Ge, Sn). Surprisingly,

Effectiveness of metal surface treatments in controlling microleakage of the acrylic resin-metal framework interface.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Microleakage at the junction between the metal alloy and acrylic resin in a removable partial denture may result in discoloration, fluid percolation, and acrylic resin deterioration. The junction between a metal alloy and acrylic resin is an area of clinical concern. Failure of a removable partial denture may be linked to this interface. Enhancing resistance to microleakage at this interface may improve the long-term union between the 2 materials. PURPOSE: This investigation was designed to determine the effects of various metal surface treatment protocols on microleakag

Human brain tumors and exposure to metal and non-metal elements: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Primary brain tumors are among the most deadly of all cancers, with a 1-year survival rate of 52%. Certain elements, such as nickel, cadmium, chromium, arsenic, and beryllium, are established carcinogens in other organs. Silicon and titanium are suspected carcinogens and other elements are known to promote or inhibit the rate of tumor growth. Knowledge about the carcinogenicity of these elements in the brain is limited. In this study, we investigated the potential role of these elements as risk factors for human brain tumors. METHODS: In a case-control study, we assessed brain bio

A complexometric method for the determination of small amounts of an alkaline-earth metal in mixture with other metals.

A discussion of the conditions for the complexometric determination of the minor component in a mixture of two metal ions is presented. It is based on expressions of the Ringbom type for the titration error. These are derived by the use of logarithmic diagrams. The results have been used to devise an analytical procedure for the determination of the alkaline earth metals in the presence of a large excess of nickel or zinc.

Photometric complex-formation titration of submicromole amounts of metal-II The presence of other metals.

End-point extrapolation with the aid of a tangent to the spectrophotometric titration curve has been discussed theoretically for the metal-indicator complex MI with a ligand L in the presence of two other metals (P(1) and P(2)). It was found that a titration end-point can only be determined when the reaction of P(1) and P(2) with L takes place only negligibly during the titration of M. Two cases of practical interest can be distinguished. The metals may react either before or after the titration has been completed. For both situations titration conditions have been derived. With these titratio…

Heavy metal stress mitigation in plants by metal-resistant fungi: molecular and biotechnological insights.

Heavy Metals (HMs) are persistent, non-biodegradable metallic elements that accumulate into soils due to weathering processes and anthropogenic activities, such as mining, smelting and industrial discharges. They can be classified as essential (Cu, Zn, Ni, Fe, Mn), which are toxic in excessive amounts, and non-essential (Cd, Pb, As, Hg), which are dangerous even in small amounts. HMs affect plant metabolism causing production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), growth inhibition and nutrient deficiency, Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings germination was lowered to 55% and 21% at concentrations of 50…

Future Outlook Toward Heavy-Metal-Free Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystals for Optoelectronic Applications.

Colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) represent a transformative class of materials for next-generation optoelectronic devices, including photodetectors (PDs), photovoltaics (PVs), catalysis, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Historically, research in this field has been dominated by toxic heavy-metal-based systems (Cd, Pb, Hg), but it is now undergoing a critical shift toward sustainability, driven by health concerns and RoHS regulations. This review provides a comprehensive overview of heavy-metal-free (HMF) chalcogenide NCs, including binary, ternary, and multinary systems. We analyze the fundamenta

Methodology for identification of depleted metallic uranium and natural metallic uranium by portable gamma spectrometer.

The requirement to distinguish between depleted metallic uranium (DU) and natural metallic uranium (NU) is essential in nuclear forensics, regulatory enforcement, nuclear fuel fabrication and environmental monitoring. Traditional laboratory-based methods offer high accuracy but are impractical for on-site measurement. This research develops a portable gamma spectrometry-based methodology for identifying DU and NU in real-time, non-destructively. The study utilizes a NaI(Tl) based gamma spectrometer to measure characteristic emissions from uranium isotopes and its daughter products. Key gamma p

Heat Transport in Disordered Binary Assemblies of Colloidal Metal-Halide Perovskite and Metallic Nanocrystals.

Nanoscale thermal management is critical for colloidal nanocrystal solids, which have inherently low thermal conductivities. The thermal properties of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals, in particular, remain underexplored. At the same time, while binary nanocrystal assemblies extend structural and electronic tunability, their impact on nanoscale thermal transport demands exploration. Here, we investigate the heat transport properties of disordered binary assemblies of colloidal CsPbBr3 and Au nanocrystals. We undertake a combined theoretical and experimental study, including spatiotemporall

Electronic structure and metal-metal bonding in early lanthanide dimers La2, Ce2, and Pr2.

Understanding whether 4f electrons participate directly in lanthanide-lanthanide bonding remains a long-standing question in f-element chemistry. Lanthanide dimers provide the simplest molecular platform for isolating intrinsic metal-metal bonding interactions without ligand-field or oxidation-state complications. Here, we present a fully relativistic multireference investigation of La2, Ce2, and Pr2 to resolve their ground electronic states and elucidate the evolution of bonding across the early lanthanide series. The ground states under spin-orbit coupling are determined to be 0g, 1g, and 2u
