Hyperbaric oxygen treatment enhances the recovery of blood flow and functional capillary density in postischemic striated muscle.

The effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) at 2.5 atmospheres of absolute pressure (ATA) on postischemic reperfusion injury in striated muscle was studied using two different animal models. One used complete tourniquet ischemia (4 hr) in the rat hindlimb, measuring blood flow in the tibialis anterior muscle by the xenon washout method at 1-1.5 and 4.5-5 hr after the start of reperfusion. The other used 4 hr of pressure-induced ischemia in the fine striated skin muscle, contained within a dorsal skinfold chamber in hamsters. Vital fluorescence microscopy was employed to measure the functional capill

Propionyl-L-Carnitine Enhances Wound Healing and Counteracts Microvascular Endothelial Cell Dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Impaired wound healing represents a high cost for health care systems. Endothelial dysfunction characterizes dermal microangiopathy and contributes to delayed wound healing and chronic ulcers. Endothelial dysfunction impairs cutaneous microvascular blood flow by inducing an imbalance between vasorelaxation and vasoconstriction as a consequence of reduced nitric oxide (NO) production and the increase of oxidative stress and inflammation. Propionyl-L-carnitine (PLC) is a natural derivative of carnitine that has been reported to ameliorate post-ischemic blood flow recovery. METHODS A

Impact of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus on Bone Health in Children.

This paper gives an overview of the impact of type 1 diabetes on bone health in children and adolescents. Firstly, we analyse studies using dual X-ray absorptiometry to assess bone mineral content and bone mineral density. Then, we discuss modern, non-invasive techniques including peripheral quantitative computer tomography (pQCT) and high-resolution pQCT for the detailed assessment of bone health aspects including bone mass, bone geometry, bone microarchitecture, and bone strength. Thereafter, we explore some of the mechanisms that are responsible for diabetic bone disease in children, like l

Reduction of Microvessel Number and Length in the Cerebellum of Purkinje Cell Degeneration Mice.

Degenerative effects of nerve tissues are often accompanied by changes in vascularization. In this regard, knowledge about hereditary cerebellar degeneration is limited. In this study, we compared the vascularity of the individual cerebellar components of 3-month-old wild-type mice (n = 8) and Purkinje cell degeneration (pcd) mutant mice, which represent a model of hereditary cerebellar degeneration (n = 8). Systematic random samples of tissue sections were processed, and laminin was immunostained to visualize microvessels. A computer-assisted stereology system was used to quantify microvessel
