TEGDMA reduces mineralization in dental pulp cells.

Direct application of dentin bonding agents onto the exposed pulp has been advocated, but in vivo studies indicate a lack of reparative dentin formation. Our objective was to investigate the role of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), a commonly used compound in dentin bonding agents, as a potential inhibitor of mineralization. Human pulp cells were exposed to different concentrations of TEGDMA, and expression of the mineralization-related genes collagen I, alkaline phosphatase, bone sialoprotein, osteocalcin, Runx2, and dentin sialophosphoprotein was analyzed. Gene expression studies

Effect of number of pregnancies on bone mineral density.

This study investigated the effect of the number of pregnancies on bone mineral density (BMD) in 320 post-menopausal women aged between 49 and 64 years. Cases were selected from people with similar lifestyles and stratified into five groups according to the number of pregnancies. Each group was divided into two subgroups according to the duration of the menopause (3-5 years versus 6-10 years). Lumbar (L2-L4) and femoral neck BMD were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and T-score values were used in the statistical evaluation. No significant difference was found between the number of

Hair tissue mineral analysis and metabolic syndrome.

Deficiency of minerals causes functional abnormality of enzymes, frequently resulting in metabolic disturbance. We investigated possible relationship between minerals and metabolic syndrome by analysis of hair tissue minerals. We selected 848 subjects older than 20 years of age at Ajou University Hospital from May 2004 to February 2007. We excluded the subjects who had cancers, steroid and thyroid medication, and incomplete record from the study. Finally, 343 subjects were eligible. We performed cross-sectional analysis for the relationship between minerals and metabolic syndrome. The contents…

Bone mineral density in patients on maintenance dialysis.

Disorders of bone and mineral metabolism affect almost all patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). High prevalence of decreased bone mineral density has been reported in this population; however, the role and diagnostic utility of bone density measurements are not well established. The incidence of bone fractures is high in patients with ESRD, but the association between fractures and bone density is not obvious. A recent meta-analysis suggested that decreased density at the radius might be associated with higher overall fracture risk. Changes in bone mineral density reflect sever

Improving global outcomes in mineral and bone disorders.

Disturbances in mineral and bone metabolism are prevalent in chronic kidney disease and an important cause of morbidity, decreased quality of life, and extraskeletal calcification that have been associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO)'s Global Mineral and Bone Initiative has sought to update the definition, evaluation, and classification of this mineral and bone disorder; improve standardization of assessment tools; enhance education about these complications; and stimulate research. In addition, this international organization spon

The distribution of mineral density in the cervical vertebral endplates.

Subsidence of various constructs into the vertebral body is a well-known complication in anterior fusion. Information on bone structure is needed, as a basis for improving these procedures. There are, however, no data available on the distribution of mineral density within vertebral endplates. In this study the regional distribution of mineralization within the cervical endplates with respect to endplate orientation (inferior and superior endplate) and level distribution (C3-C7) was examined by means of computed tomographic osteoabsorptiometry (CT-OAM). The distribution of mineralization in 80

Mineralization of osteoblasts with electrospun collagen/hydroxyapatite nanofibers.

Regeneration of fractured or diseased bones is the challenge faced by current technologies in tissue engineering. The major solid components of human bone consist of collagen and hydroxyapatite. Collagen (Col) and hydroxyapatite (HA) have potential in mimicking natural extracellular matrix and replacing diseased skeletal bones. More attention has been focused on HA because of its crystallographic structure similar to inorganic compound found in natural bone and extensively investigated due to its excellent biocompatibility, bioactivity and osteoconductivity properties. In the present study, el

Exercise and bone mineral accrual in children and adolescents.

Osteoporosis is a serious skeletal disease causing an increase in morbidity and mortality through its association with age-related fractures. Although most effort in fracture prevention has been directed at retarding the rate of age-related bone loss and reducing the frequency and severity of trauma among elderly people, evidence is growing that peak bone mass is an important contributor to bone strength during later life. Indeed, there has been a large emphasis on the prevention of osteoporosis through the optimization of peak bone mass during childhood and adolescence. The prepubertal human

Bone mineralization density distribution in health and disease.

Human cortical and trabecular bones are formed by individual osteons and bone packets, respectively, which are produced at different time points during the (re)modeling cycle by the coupled activity of bone cells. This leads to a heterogeneously mineralized bone material with a characteristic bone mineralization density distribution (BMDD) reflecting bone turnover, mineralization kinetics and average bone matrix age. In contrast to BMD, which is an estimate of the total amount of mineral in a scanned area of whole bone, BMDD describes the local mineral content of the bone matrix throughout the

Mineralized tissue cells are a principal source of FGF23.

While fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 23 is known as a phosphaturic factor in inherited and/or acquired hypophosphatemic disorders, it also serves an endocrine role in normal phosphate homeostasis. FGF23 acts negatively on the NaPi2a cotransporter and 25-hydroxy D(3)-1 alpha-hydroxylase with a resultant decrease in renal phosphate (Pi) reabsorption, while osteoblasts appear to be a primary source of FGF23 whose expression is counter-upregulated by 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) (1,25(OH)(2)D(3)). Here we have shown the distribution of FGF23 in normal rat bone and tooth, and its expression pro

Bone mineral density and depot medroxyprogesterone acetate.

INTRODUCTION: Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) suppresses pituitary gonadotrophin output, thus, suppressing ovulation. Estrogen production from the ovary is also strongly inhibited, and the resulting estrogen deficiency has a detrimental impact on bone. Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate may be particularly detrimental in young women, as it may impede attainment of peak bone mass, and switching to a different contraceptive is recommended. However, the effect of sequential use of DMPA with other contraceptives in this age group has not been investigated. METHODS: This was a cross-sectio

Mineral metabolism in dimethylnitrosamine-induced hepatic fibrosis.

OBJECTIVES: Complications such as ascites during the pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis may lead to several abnormalities in mineral metabolism. In the present investigation, we have monitored serum and liver concentrations of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium during experimentally induced hepatic fibrosis in rats. DESIGN AND METHODS: The liver injury was induced by intraperitoneal injections of dimethylnitrosamine (DMN; N-nitrosodimethylamine, NDMA) in doses 1 mg/100 g body weight on 3 consecutive days of each week over a period of 21 days. Calcium, magnesium, sodium and p

[Disturbances of mineral metabolism in a French hemodialysis unit].

Recent data from DOPPS in the field of the mineral metabolism showed that there is a relative homogeneity between most of the countries and continents studied. In reference to the American recommendations (NKF-K/DOQI 2003) the majority of the patients are apart from the desired targets. Approximately 70% of the patients have a relative biological hypoparathyroidism (PTHi<150 pg/ml) or a hyperparathyroidism (PTHi > 300 pg/ml). Only 4.7-5.5% of the patients are in the standard targets, for the four criteria which are: the calcemia, the phosphatemia, serum calcium-phosphorus product and PTH. Many

Mineral metabolism, mortality, and morbidity in maintenance hemodialysis.

Mortality rates in ESRD are unacceptably high. Disorders of mineral metabolism (hyperphosphatemia, hypercalcemia, and secondary hyperparathyroidism) are potentially modifiable. For determining associations among disorders of mineral metabolism, mortality, and morbidity in hemodialysis patients, data on 40,538 hemodialysis patients with at least one determination of serum phosphorus and calcium during the last 3 mo of 1997 were analyzed. Unadjusted, case mix-adjusted, and multivariable-adjusted relative risks of death were calculated for categories of serum phosphorus, calcium, calcium x phosph

Effects of oral contraceptives on bone mineral density.

Osteoporosis is a major health problem that leads to a high incidence of spine, radial, and hip fractures. It is now well recognized that a chronically hypoestrogenic state increases bone turnover that, in turn, causes a critical decrease in bone mineral density (BMD), an important determinant of fracture risk. During the premenopausal period, hypogonadism can have deleterious effects on skeletal health by reducing peak bone mass or inducing precocious bone loss. In young women, hypothalamic amenorrhea, caused by gonadotropin-releasing hormone pulsatility dysregulation, is often associated wit

Vitamin and mineral status: effects on physical performance.

Public health recommendations encourage the selection of a balanced diet and increasing physical activity to foster health and well-being. Whereas the adverse effects of restricted intakes of protein, fat, and carbohydrate on physical performance are well known, there is limited information about the impact of low intakes of vitamins and minerals on the exercise capacity and performance of humans. Physically active people generally consume amounts of vitamins and minerals consistent with the recommendations for the general public. However, when intakes are less than recommendations, some notic…
