Mitochondrial Genome Sequence of the Scabies Mite Provides Insight into the Genetic Diversity of Individual Scabies Infections.

The scabies mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, is an obligate parasite of the skin that infects humans and other animal species, causing scabies, a contagious disease characterized by extreme itching. Scabies infections are a major health problem, particularly in remote Indigenous communities in Australia, where co-infection of epidermal scabies lesions by Group A Streptococci or Staphylococcus aureus is thought to be responsible for the high rate of rheumatic heart disease and chronic kidney disease. We collected and separately sequenced mite DNA from several pools of thousands of whole mites from a po

Assessment of the cytokine profile in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of naturally Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis infested dogs.

The mechanism of cytokine secretion from T lymphocytes plays an important role in the immune response of dogs and parasitic skin infestations. Assessment of the cytokine profile of naturally S. scabiei var. canis infested dogs could augment understanding of the pathobiology of canine sarcoptic mange. Therefore, the present study examined the cytokines in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of dogs suffering from sarcoptic mange. Thirteen dogs naturally infected with sarcoptic mange participated in the study. The dogs were found positive for S. scabiei var. canis mites in skin scraping examinati

The comparative host status of red veld rats (Aethomys chrysophilus) and bushveld gerbils (Tatera leucogaster) for epifaunal arthropods in the southern Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Red veld rats (Aethomys chrysophilus) and bushveld gerbils (Tatera leucogaster) were trapped at monthly intervals, when possible, over a 2-year period, in the southern Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga Province. Forty-six specimens of each species were caught, euthenased and microscopically examined for fleas, lice, ticks and mites. Clear differences existed between the two rodent hosts in infestation intensity and also parasite species. The flea, Xenopsylla brasiliensis, commonly and exclusively utilized red veld rats, whereas Xenopsylla frayi was common and specific to bushveld gerbils. T. le

Development of a serodiagnostic test for sheep scab using recombinant protein Pso o 2.

Early stages of sheep scab, the disease caused by the non-burrowing mite Psoroptes ovis, are often sub-clinical, or can be mis-diagnosed. A diagnostic test capable of detecting early disease and latent infestations is therefore highly desirable in disease control. This paper describes the design and validation of an ELISA, which incorporates a recombinant P. ovis antigen (Pso o 2), for the early detection of anti-P. ovis serum antibodies in sheep. This ELISA was evaluated using sera from sheep infested with P. ovis (n = 58) and sheep (n = 433) with no P. ovis infestation as well as sheep infec

Ectoparasites of murids in peninsular Malaysia and their associated diseases.

A considerable number of rat-borne ectoparasite studies have been conducted since the early 1930s in the Malayan Peninsula (now known as peninsular Malaysia). The majority of studies were field surveys and collections of specimens across the region, and were conducted primarily to catalogue the ectoparasite host distribution and discover novel species. This has generated a signification amount of information, particularly on the diversity and host distribution; other aspects such as morphology, host distribution and medical significance have also been investigated. Amongst the four main groups

Within-flock transmission of sheep scab in naive sheep housed with single infested sheep.

The within flock transmission of sheep scab was studied in two trials, which lasted 14 and 12 weeks, respectively. A total of 40 non-infested, scab-naive sheep were divided into six groups of between 6 and 20 individuals. Each group was subsequently housed with a single infested index case, carrying scab lesions of different ages. The groups of sheep in both trials were video recorded continuously and all the sheep were individually examined on a weekly basis. The occurrence of transmission was measured in two ways: first, by the detection of early scab lesions during clinical examination and,

Rodent and scrub typhus survey in a ricefield at Kramat Tunngak area, Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Trapping of small mammals in a ricefield at Kramat Tunggak around Tanjung Priok in Jakarta city, was carried out from July 1977 through June 1978. Of three species of rodents, R.argentiventer was found to be the predominant species in the ricefield. R.r.diardii was an intermittent resident, and the presence of R.norvegicus was interesting observation. S.murinus, a house shrew, was also present. R.argentiventer was the dominant species during the periods when the rice grains were available as a source of food. Infestation with Gamasid mites and non-vector chiggers was found common in all rodent

Ectoparasites of the European wildcat (Felis silvestris) in Germany.

Understanding the impact of parasites on wildlife populations is an important aspect of conservation management. However, research on ectoparasites in wildlife can be difficult, as examinations of live animals which are not habituated to human handling are often impossible. The European wildcat (Felis silvestris) is a strictly protected wildlife species whose population has been recovering in Germany in recent decades. Several studies from different European countries have investigated the parasitological status of European wildcat populations. However, most of these studies assessed endoparas

Efficacy of a fluralaner-based ectoparasiticide for the control of otodectic and sarcoptic mange in naturally infested dogs, evaluated in randomized, double-blind clinical studies.

BACKGROUND: One of the most relevant parasitic mites is Sarcoptes scabiei, which causes sarcoptic mange, commonly known as scabies. This condition is highly contagious and leads to intense itching and skin lesions in dogs. Otodectes cynotis, the "ear mite," is immensely relevant as well, being the primary cause of external otitis in domestic carnivores, causing severe ear itching. The treatment and control of both these forms of mange rely on the use of antiparasitic compounds, such as fluralaner, which acts by paralyzing and killing arthropods. This study aimed to determine the acaricidal eff

Potential of ferritin 2 as an antigen for the development of a universal vaccine for avian mites, poultry red mites, tropical fowl mites, and northern fowl mites.

INTRODUCTION: Poultry red mites (PRMs, Dermanyssus gallinae), blood-sucking ectoparasites, are a threat to the poultry industry because of reduced production caused by infestation. In addition, tropical fowl mites (TFMs, Ornithonyssus bursa) and northern fowl mites (NFMs, Ornithonyssus sylviarum) are hematophagous, distributed in various regions, genetically and morphologically close to PRMs, and cause similar problems to the poultry industry. Vaccine approaches have been studied for PRM control, and several molecules have been identified in PRMs as candidates for effective vaccine antigens. T

The Possible Relation of Demodex and Facial Erythema in Connective Tissue Diseases.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the frequency of Demodex infestation and clinical implications in connective tissue disease patients with facial erythema. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with a connective tissue disease and had facial erythema were consecutively enrolled in the study from 2019-2020. An age and gender matched control group was formed from healthy volunteers. Presence of Demodex was investigated by standardized skin surface biopsy. Number of Demodex mites over 5 per centimeter square was considered meaningful for infestation. Topical or systemic metronidazole treatment was give

Mite allergens in relation to home conditions and sensitization of asthmatic children from three climatic regions.

We investigated the levels of mite (Der p I and Der f I) allergen in dust from bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms from 130 homes of asthmatic children in three climatic zones of Sweden. Bedroom dust samples included the child's mattress, carpets, floors, and other plain surfaces. Living-room dust samples were taken from sofas and other furniture, carpets, floors, and other plain surfaces. The allergen levels were related to home characteristics, including absolute indoor humidity (AIH), relative humidity (RH), and air changes per hour (ach). Mite allergen was detected in 62% of th

Fleas and lice on scrub hares (Lepus saxatilis) in South Africa.

A total of 380 scrub hares (Lepus saxatilis) from 5 localities, ranging from the north-eastern Transvaal to the eastern and the south-western Cape Province of South Africa, were examined for fleas and lice. Ctenocephalides felis damarensis was almost exclusively responsible for the flea infestations on hares at 4 of the 5 sites. At 4 localities the prevalence and abundance of this flea reached peaks between August and October and declined thereafter to their lowest levels between February and April. Its prevalence and abundance in the north-eastern Transvaal were not correlated with the breedi

Myostatin mutation causing double muscling could affect increased psoroptic mange sensitivity in dual purpose Belgian Blue cattle.

Belgian Blue cattle are known for their high degree of muscling and good carcass qualities. This high degree of muscling is mainly caused by a mutation in the myostatin gene (MSTN). Although the MSTN mutation is considered as fixed in the Belgian Blue breed, segregation is occurring in a sub-population bred for dual purpose. In the latter population, we observed an association between the mutation in MSTN and susceptibility to psoroptic mange, a skin disease caused by Psoroptes ovis mites that heavily plagues Belgian Blue cattle. In total, 291 animals were sampled and screened for their suscep

[Primary human demodicosis. A disease sui generis].

Human Demodex mites (Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis) are unique in that they are an obligate human ectoparasite that can inhabit the pilosebaceous unit lifelong without causing obvious host immune response in most cases. The mode of symbiosis between humans and human Demodex mites is unclear, while the pathogenicity of human Demodex mites in many inflammatory skin diseases is now better understood. Primary human demodicosis is a skin disease sui generis not associated with local or systemic immunosuppression. Diagnosis is often underestimated and differentiation from folliculitis, pap

[Rosacea-like demodicidosis and chronic blepharitis].

Demodicidosis is a parasitic skin disease caused by the follicle mites Demodex sp. In this article, we present a case of rosacea-like demodicidosis, discuss the clinical features of Demodex infestation in man and review their diagnosis and therapeutic modalities. A 37-year-old woman presented in our department with chronic blepharitis present for one year. On physical examination, the patient presented blepharitis and papulovesicles with fine scaling limited to the face. There was no telangectasia. The patient did not report flushing episodes or any kind of photosensitivity. A diagnosis of ros
