The purpose of this project was to determine if alveolar bone modeling could be associated with altered mechanical environment. Finite element stress analysis of an orthodontically tipped rat molar periodontium was performed. A case of unilateral ectopic eruption of maxillary first permanent molar with congenital absence of second premolar on the affected side is presented. The treatment of choice in this case, was extraction of the second deciduous molar to permit full eruption of the affected molar. A review of the prevalence, clinical and the radiographic presentation as well as different treatment modalities for this condition is provided.

Thirty-four children with lower premolar crowding were treated by extraction of second molars. Thirteen cases had mechanical lower arch treatment started not less than 6 months after extractions. The remainder had no treatment in the lower arch. The change in premolar crowding was measured, and the reasons why spontaneous alignment occurred in some cases and not in others were examined.

A case of permanent molar impactions involving maxillary and mandibular second and third molars is reported. An odontogenic keratocyst was present in conjunction with root resorption of adjacent teeth. Treatment involved surgical removal of the impacted teeth and enucleation of the cystic lesion.

Molar pregnancy with a coexisting live fetus is a rare occurrence. We present morphologic and cytogenetic analysis of a recent case. Cytogenetic studies revealed a 46, XX karyotype for the fetus, the normal placenta, and the abnormal placenta. Chromosome banding studies confirmed the presence of maternal and paternal chromosomes in all three tissues. These studies favored the possibility that both tumor and fetus arose from a single gestation. Subsequently, the patient required chemotherapy for low-risk, metastatic trophoblastic disease.

The accuracy of using panoramic radiographs as the basis for classification of impacted third molars and subsequent fee reimbursement by third party carriers was evaluated. Radiographs showing 20 impacted third molar teeth were classified independently by 40 oral and maxillofacial surgeons, 10 general dentists, and 11 health insurance consultants. No group had an accuracy rate better than approximately 50%. These findings demonstrate the unreliability of radiographs for classification of impacted teeth, irrespective of the training or experience of the evaluator.
