Moral tensions when providing care to MDRO carriers: A qualitative study among health care providers in Dutch hospitals and nursing homes.

BACKGROUND: To prevent the spread of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), adherence to infection prevention measures is essential. However, these measures can negatively affect both patients and health care providers (HCPs), leading to various moral tensions. We aimed to investigate moral tensions in providing care to MDRO carriers as experienced by HCPs. METHODS: We performed semistructured interviews with 29 HCPs from 2 hospitals and 3 nursing homes. Thematic analysis was with a double-coder process supported by ATLAS.ti software. RESULTS: We identified 4 moral tensions. First, HCPs expe

Mapping a moral panic: News media narratives and medical expertise in public debates on safer supply, diversion, and youth drug use in Canada.

The ongoing overdose and drug toxicity crisis in North America has contributed momentum to the emergence of safer supply prescribing and programs in Canada as a means of providing an alternative to the highly volatile unregulated drug supply. The implementation and scale-up of safer supply have been met with a vocal reaction on the part of news media commentators, conservative politicians, recovery industry representatives, and some prominent addiction medicine physicians. This reaction has largely converged around several narratives, based on unsubstantiated claims and anecdotal evidence, all

Protecting the Protectors: Moral Injury, Coping Styles, and Mental Health of UK Police Officers and Staff Investigating Child Sexual Abuse Material.

Police officers and staff who investigate child sexual abuse material (CSAM) may be at elevated risk for mental health problems, which may be mitigated or exacerbated by institutional and interpersonal factors. The current work examined mental health in a large sample of UK CSAM investigators (N = 661). Results suggest substantially elevated rates of depression and anxiety but not posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Feeling successful and supported powerfully buffered against negative outcomes, whereas moral injury-particularly feelings of institutional betrayal-predicted worse outcomes. Alt

The Role of Alexithymia and Moral Disengagement in Childhood Physical Abuse and Depressive Symptoms: A Comparative Study Among Rural and Urban Chinese College Students.

PURPOSE: There is robust evidence indicating the adverse association between childhood abuse and depressive symptoms. However, the ways in which childhood physical abuse is indirectly associated with adulthood depressive symptoms by alexithymia and moral disengagement remain poorly understood, particularly in the context of China. The present study aims to investigate how childhood physical abuse may be associated with depressive symptoms via the serial mediation effects of alexithymia and moral disengagement among college students in China. METHODS: A total of 686 college students (female: 5

Moral Injury and Shame Mediate the Relationship Between Childhood Trauma and Borderline Personality Disorder, PTSD, and Complex PTSD Symptoms in Psychiatric Inpatients.

Moral injury (MI) has received increased research attention in the past decades. However, despite its detrimental mental health consequences, MI has not been studied in psychiatric patients. We aimed to establish the relationship between childhood trauma, MI, and borderline personality disorder (BPD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and disturbances in self-organization symptoms (DSO), a core diagnostic criterion of complex PTSD besides PTSD symptoms, and shame as a moral emotion in an inpatient psychiatric sample (N = 240). We found that the impact of childhood trauma on present BPD, PT

The wounded helper: moral injury contributes to depression and anxiety among Israeli health and social care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic can affect the mental health of health and social care workers (HSCWs) who are frontline workers in this crisis. The pandemic poses unique challenges to HSCWs as they face morally daunting decisions while working with limited knowledge and resources. This study examined the relationships between exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) and depression and anxiety among HSCWs. METHOD: A sample of 243 Israeli HSCWs completed validated self-report questionnaires that include measures of depression, anxiety, exposure to PMIEs, perceived stress, and

"You have to find a caring man, like your father!" gendering sickle cell and refashioning women's moral boundaries in Sierra Leone.

Most research on sickle cell disorders has tended to be gender-blind. This qualitative study undertaken in 2018, explores if and how sickle cell disorders become gendered in Sierra Leone through the analytical framework of a feminist ethics of care. It argues that women have to navigate moral blame when they have children with the condition. At the same time women refashion moral boundaries so that gendered norms around childhood and parenting for such children become suspended, in favour of creation of careful spaces. Parental fears of physical and sexual violence mean that gendered sexual no

'You must know what you mean when you say that': the morality of knowledge claims about ADHD in radio phone-ins.

Drawing on a corpus of radio phone-ins, we present a discursive psychological analysis of how mothers carefully tailor their knowledge claims regarding their children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Mothers typically claim knowledge about their children's good intentions, but not about the 'ADHD-ness' of their conduct. Whereas the former is seen as appropriate knowledge for a concerned parent, the latter is treated as a matter of expert knowledge. We show that as soon as problematic behaviour is treated as observable from the outside and describable by mothers and other l

The impact of commuter war on military personnel.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. armed forces recently experienced a reduction in forces along with an increase in operational tempo. The Air Force and other branches supporting its mission share this common military burden and also experience a unique stressor. The Air Force has developed a military force that can fight by night and return home by day. The relatively new phenomenon of "commuter war" was especially evident during Operation Allied Force over Kosovo. METHODS: Military personnel (N = 540) participating in Operation Allied Force were administered a survey measuring morale, wellness behaviors…

Midwifery academic educators' experiences and knowledge on managing students' moral distress and psycho-emotional trauma during clinical placement: A qualitative study protocol.

While growing attention has been given to moral distress and work-related psycho-emotional trauma among practicing midwives, few researchers have explored how midwifery academic educators understand, identify, and manage these phenomena in students. This paper presents a study protocol on the exploration of midwifery academic educators' experiences and knowledge in managing students' moral distress and psycho-emotional trauma related to clinical placement. A qualitative research design using focus group interviews with academic educators involved in undergraduate and postgraduate midwifery edu

An exploratory study of perceived and actual similarity in extraversion and moral attitudes toward manners in young adult friendships: Evidence from Japanese female students.

OBJECTIVE: Humans form and maintain long-term cooperative relationships, such as friendships, regardless of genetic connections. Evidence indicates that similarities between individuals play a key role in social selection and preferences. This study examined whether friends show similarity in personality traits, moral attitudes, and conformity, and whether subjective similarity correlates with objective similarity based on questionnaire ratings. Japanese female college students (N = 30 pairs) in friendship relationships participated in a face-to-face questionnaire survey as a friend-pair group

Reciprocal Relationships Between Perceived Teachers' Moral Grandstanding, Self-Esteem, and Rumination Among Chinese Primary School Students: An RI-CLPM Study.

Moral grandstanding is the use of moral talk driven by egotistical motives to promote oneself or display moral superiority. Although moral grandstanding has been extensively examined in political and public health contexts, its relevance to educational settings remains understudied, especially in teacher-student interactions where teachers serve as moral authorities for children. The present research adapted the Perceived Teachers' Moral Grandstanding Scale and examined its longitudinal associations with students' socioemotional processes. In the first step, the Moral Grandstanding Motivation

Is moral adequacy possible in the face of structural disadvantage? The experiences of health and social care staff in supporting homeless people using substances at the end of life.

BACKGROUND: Homeless people using substances at the end-of-life face many challenges in accessing and receiving good care. These can relate to poor interdisciplinary working by health and social care practitioners, stigma and structural disadvantage. OBJECTIVE: Using positioning theory, we explored the challenges of existing models of practice for practitioners supporting this population. RESEARCH DESIGN: This is a qualitative descriptive study in which data were collected via four interdisciplinary practitioner focus groups. DATA SOURCES AND METHODS: The four online interdisciplinary focus

Commentary: What makes a life go well? Moral functioning and quality of life measurement in neurodevelopmental disorders - reflections on Jonsson et al. (2017).

Jonsson et al.'s excellent review of the literature on quality of life (QoL) and childhood mental and behavioural disorders (Jonsson et al., ) highlights the need for studies that utilise child self-reported QoL, in contrast to parent or proxy QoL measures, and further challenges the field to develop QoL measures that 'put the child's own views and priorities first'.

Chewing ability and quality of life among the elderly residing in a rural community in Japan.

The present study statistically evaluates the relationship between chewing ability and quality of life (QOL) in elderly Japanese residents. We used a subjective evaluation and a mastication score determined by the food intake status to evaluate chewing ability. The PGC morale scale was used to evaluate the QOL level. The mastication score was significantly related to the QOL level in the subject group (P<0.05). The relationship between the subjective evaluation of chewing ability and the score on the PGC morale scale showed a similar tendency. In the section of the PGC morale scale that assess…

From Awareness to Moral Redemption: Medicalisation, Stigma, and Anti-Establishment Aesthetics in the 'Obesity Without Filters' Spanish Campaign by Pharmaceutical Company Novo Nordisk.

This article examines how 'obesity' is discursively and narratively constructed in Novo Nordisk's 'Obesity Without Filters' campaign. Drawing on the premise that awareness campaigns function as ideological texts, it explores how discourses of empathy, moral responsibility, and biomedical authority shape public understandings of body weight - with particular attention to how such campaigns operate beyond Anglophone contexts, and how the further medicalisation of body weight may ultimately run counter to anti-stigma efforts. Using qualitative content analysis informed by framing theory, conceptu

Maybe I Can't Cook, but It Doesn't Mean I Don't Care: Moral Framing and Private Criticism of Meat Consumption Leads to Psychological Defensiveness.

Meat consumption contributes to climate change and has become a moralized issue. People may face moral criticism for meat consumption. Building on the central role of morality in person evaluation, this research tested the hypotheses that moral (vs. competence) and public (vs. private) criticism received online would elicit greater defensiveness among meat-eaters. Study 1 (N = 307) supported the hypothesis that moral criticism heightened defensive responses (e.g. sensitivity, derogation, and avoidance). Study 2 (N = 316) showed, unexpectedly, that private criticism led to greater defensiveness
