BACKGROUND: As climate variability and extreme weather events associated with climate change become more prevalent, public health authorities can expect to face an expanding spectrum of vector-borne diseases with increasing incidence and geographical spread. Common interventions include the use of larvicides and adulticides, as well as targeted communications to increase public awareness regarding the need for personal protective measures, such as mosquito repellant, protective clothing, and mosquito nets. Here, we propose a simplified compartmental model of mosquito-borne disease dynamics tha

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne diseases cause millions of deaths each year and are increasingly spreading from tropical and subtropical regions into temperate zones, posing significant public health risks. In the Basque Country region of Spain, changing climatic conditions have driven the spread of invasive mosquitoes, increasing the potential for local transmission of diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. The establishment of mosquito species in new areas, coupled with rising mosquito populations and viremic imported cases, presents challenges for public health systems in non-endemic re

Geographic pattern of dengue fever is changing due to the global environmental and climate changes in the 21st century. Evidence of community's knowledge, mosquito bite patterns and protective behavior practices in non-endemic regions is limited. This study examined the knowledge of dengue, mosquito bite patterns, protective behavior practices and their associated factors in Hong Kong, a non-endemic subtropical city. A population-based random telephone survey (n = 590) was conducted three weeks after the government announcement of a local dengue outbreak in August 2018. Sociodemographic status

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. Increasing mosquito resistance to insecticides can significantly limit current vector control strategies. Spatial repellents represent a promising complementary tool by disrupting mosquito human-seeking behaviour. This trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of IR3535 as a spatial repellent in Tambai, a high-transmission rural area in central Mozambique.
METHODS: This was a randomised, Before-After-Control-Intervention trial. Four Tambai blocks were randomly selected, with 40 households randomly assigned to receiv

BACKGROUND: Attractive targeted sugar bait (ATSB) is a novel approach to vector control, offering an alternative mode of insecticide delivery via the insect alimentary canal, with potential to deliver a variety of compounds new to medical entomology and malaria control. Its potential to control mosquitoes was recently demonstrated in major field trials in Africa. The pyrrole chlorfenapyr is an insecticide new to malaria vector control, and through its unique mode of action-disruption of ATP mediated energy transfer in mitochondria-it may have direct action on energy transfer in the flight musc

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT), which is based on irradiation-induced sterility, and incompatible insect technique (IIT), which is based on Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility (a kind of male sterility), have been used as alternative methods to reduce mosquito vector populations. Both methods require the release of males to reduce fertile females and suppress the number of natural populations. Different techniques of sex separation to obtain only males have been investigated previously. Our work involves an application of mechanical larval-pupal glass separators to se

Many mosquito-borne orthoflaviviruses are important public health problems. Vaccination is critical for disease control because there is no licensed antiviral therapy for any orthoflavivirus. Live-attenuated vaccines (LAVs) that elicit protective immunity with one single immunization are the most effective tool for disease control, as shown by the success of implementing yellow fever (YF) 17D and Japanese encephalitis (JE) SA14-14-2 vaccines in routine immunization programs within endemic regions. Importantly, neither the YFV 17D strain nor the JEV SA14-14-2 LAV strain are mosquito-competent,

Evaluation of malaria transmission levels is necessary to compare ecologically diverse areas and to assess the effectiveness of efforts to control the disease. The purpose of this report is to describe useful techniques for descriptive epidemiology and potentially pertinent indicators regarding the three links in the epidemiological chain: transmission from mosquito to man, transmission from man to mosquito, and sporogonic cycle. Standards for evaluation of transmission from mosquito to man are now well established. Techniques and resulting data, mostly entomological, have been validated in nu

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) is a highly pathogenic alphavirus that causes periodic outbreaks in the eastern USA. Mosquito abatement programs are faced with various challenges with surveillance and control of EEEV and other mosquito-borne illnesses. Environmental sampling of mosquito populations can be technically complex. Here we report the identification of biomarkers, development and validation of a colorimetric reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay for the detection of EEEV. Positive samples are easily visualized by a color change from pin

Human disease incidence attributed to arbovirus infection is increasing throughout the world, with effective control interventions limited by issues of sustainability, insecticide resistance and the lack of effective vaccines. Several promising control strategies are currently under development, such as the release of mosquitoes trans-infected with virus-blocking Wolbachia bacteria. Implementation of any control program is dependent on effective virus surveillance and a thorough understanding of virus-vector interactions. Massively parallel sequencing has enormous potential for providing compr

Urban environments offer favourable conditions for mosquito proliferation, supporting the transmission of diseases such as dengue and West Nile virus. Although fewer than 10% of the more than 3700 known mosquito species act as vectors, many thrive in cities due to climate, habitat availability and proximity to humans. Salta, northern Argentina, an understudied yet highly diverse region regarding mosquito fauna, is undergoing rapid urban growth. This study addresses a key gap by examining mosquito species developing in Salta's urban drainage channels. Understanding species composition in these

BACKGROUND: The invasion of the mosquito salivary glands by Plasmodium sporozoites is a critical step that defines the success of malaria transmission and a detailed understanding of the molecules responsible for salivary gland invasion could be leveraged towards control of vector-borne pathogens. Antibodies directed against the mosquito salivary gland protein SGS1 have been shown to reduce Plasmodium gallinaceum sporozoite invasion of Aedes aegypti salivary glands, but the specific role of this protein in sporozoite invasion and in other stages of the Plasmodium life cycle remains unknown.

Outside sub-Saharan Africa, Anopheline mosquito exophagic and/or crepuscular behaviour patterns imply that insecticide-treated nets may provide incomplete protection from malaria-infective mosquito bites. Supplementary repellent treatment has been recommended in such circumstances, especially where vectors are exophilic and so are not susceptible to residual insecticide spraying. As maintaining complete usage of repellents in a community is unrealistic, the potential negative impact on non-users of repellent usage by 'neighbours' in the same community needs to be addressed in the context of he

Zika is an infectious disease with multiple transmission routes, which is related to severe congenital disabilities, especially microcephaly, and has attracted worldwide concern. This paper aims to study the dynamic behavior and optimal control of the disease. First, we establish a stochastic reaction-diffusion model (SRDM) for Zika virus, including human-mosquito transmission, human-human sexual transmission, and vertical transmission of mosquitoes, and prove the existence, uniqueness, and boundedness of the global positive solution of the model. Then, we discuss the sufficient conditions for

Wolbachia-based biocontrol has recently emerged as a potential method for prevention and control of dengue and other vector-borne diseases. Major vector species, such as Aedes aegypti females, when deliberately infected with Wolbachia become less capable of getting viral infections and transmitting the virus to human hosts. In this paper, we propose an explicit sex-structured population model that describes an interaction of uninfected (wild) male and female mosquitoes and those deliberately infected with wMelPop strain of Wolbachia in the same locality. This particular strain of Wolbachia is

Together, the interruption of transmission, through annual mass treatments with antifilarial drugs, and the alleviation of suffering in chronic cases form the principal strategy of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF). Entomological monitoring of the annual mass drug administrations is necessary to assess transmission levels and progress towards control or elimination of lymphatic filariasis. However, the traditional procedures for entomological monitoring, such as the dissection of mosquitoes caught manually, either as they come to bite at night or as they rest by da

The impact of deltamethrin-impregnated cloth targets on Stegomyia polynesiensis (= Aedes polynesiensis) (Marks) (Diptera: Culicidae) was assessed under laboratory and semi-field settings in French Polynesia. Stegomyia polynesiensis females were released into small laboratory cages and large field cages containing either a deltamethrin-treated or an untreated navy blue cloth, and mosquito knock-down and mortality were assessed. The 24-h mortality rate in mosquitoes exposed to the insecticide-treated target in small cages was 98.0%. These mosquitoes also demonstrated significantly higher levels
