A 17-year-old patient suffered a dislocation of the right mandibular condyle into the middle cranial fossa following a motorcycle accident. Reduction was delayed because of serious orthopaedic injuries. The condyle was relocated into the glenoid fossa through a combined neurosurgical and preauricular approach. Five years later the patient presented for removal of wisdom teeth and a CT-scan was done to determine the effects of the trauma and management to the condyle. In children, even minor trauma to the chest can result in cardiac injury. We describe a case of a 13-year-old boy who received blunt chest trauma during a motorcycle accident. He was initially symptom-free but later complained of persistent chest pain and a murmur was noted. An anterior muscular ventricular septal defect was detected one day after the accident, and a left ventricular pseudo-aneurysm developed days later. Both were successfully repaired 3 weeks after the injury.

A young asymptomatic patient, with moderate haemophilia due to factor IX deficiency, developed symptoms of upper cord compression caused by a haemorrhage 12 hours after riding a motorcycle on a poorly maintained road. This led to quadriparesis with respiratory paralysis. We report a case of an unusual pattern of fracture in an 11 year-old girl who sustained a distal femoral epiphyseal injury of her right knee after a motorcycle accident. It is a combination of type I and type III epiphyseal injury. This is the so-called biplane fracture of distal femoral epiphysis. The pathomechanism of the injury is a combined adduction and hyperextension type. Open reduction and internal fixation are used in order to achieve anatomic reduction. Three months after operation the fracture was healed with good functional result.

Rupture of the normal aortic valve after blunt trauma to the chest is seen infrequently. With the ever-increasing incidence of car and motorcycle accidents, this injury should be considered during the initial examination of an accident victim. Any patient without a history of heart disease presenting with heart murmurs after severe blunt trauma to the chest should give rise to the suspicion of aortic valve damage. When the diagnosis is proved, aortic valve expoloration is necessary. Review of the published cases establishes that valve replacement is the treatment of choice.

Burn patients are often plagued by fever due to the inflammatory nature of their injuries as well as the normal postoperative systemic inflammatory response syndrome. One etiology for fever, often not initially considered, is drug-induced fever. A rare cause of drug-induced fever is heparin with only one documented case reported in the literature. We present a case of heparin-induced fever in a patient who experienced a 32% total BSA friction burn after a motorcycle crash.

Aortic rupture and transection are constituents of the acute aortic syndrome. Injury to the thoracic aorta during motor vehicle crashes is associated with blunt chest trauma and rapid deceleration mechanisms. Type A dissections and/or rupture of the aorta at the level of the aortic isthmus are the more common presentations of aortic injuries associated with motor vehicle crashes. We present the case of atypical echocardiographic findings of a nearly complete circumferential transection of the proximal ascending aorta injury after a motorcycle crash.

Blunt chest trauma can cause serious complications, but coronary artery occlusion is rare. In a 19-year-old man, 40 days after a motorcycle accident, comprehensive echocardiography detected left anterior descending artery occlusion and left ventricular dysfunction, which was confirmed by coronary angiography and ventriculography. Echocardiography was also able to confirm restored left anterior descending artery flow and improved left ventricular function after coronary artery bypass grafting.

Bilateral knee dislocations seldom occur, and fewer than a dozen cases of bilateral luxatio erecta humeri (erect dislocation of the shoulder) have been reported. Here we present the case of a patient who sustained bilateral knee dislocations and bilateral luxatio erecta humeri in a motorcycle accident. Transient neurologic compromise resolved with closed reduction of the bilateral shoulder and left knee dislocations. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a patient with this combination of injuries.

Dislocation of the testes is an uncommon sequela of trauma. In contemporary times, it is usually associated with motorcycle accidents. We present 2 cases of unilateral traumatic testicular dislocation and 1 case of bilateral dislocation, all involving motorcyclists. Spontaneous reduction is rare. Early reduction is recommended because of histological changes seen in dislocated testes. Surgical reduction is often required. The significance of this condition must be emphasised to doctors managing trauma patients and early urological consultation obtained.

A case translunate, transmetacarpal, scapho-radial fracture with perilunate dislocation occurred as a young man drove his motorcycle into the side of a car. Closed reduction was performed initially. Open reduction was performed with a screw in the lunate. Eighteen months later the screw was removed and after two and a half years x-rays revealed no signs of avascular necrosis or arthrosis. The patient fully recovered. This case stresses the necessity of open reduction in cases of complicated carpal fracture dislocations.

Soft tissue mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection that can develop on contaminated wounds. We report a case of Mucor circinelloides ankle infection in an immunocompetent man following a high-energy motorcycle accident, which has successfully been treated by surgery (multiple debridements, arthrodesis, soft tissue defect reconstruction with flap and skin graft), systemic antifungal therapy (initial liposomal amphotericin B followed by isavuconazole) and hyperbaric oxygen. This case highlights the therapeutic challenges and need for a multidisciplinary approach of such infection.

We report about an 81-year-old male patient who suffered a medial femoral neck fracture after a fall on the left leg. A total hip arthroplasty was planned based on the appropriate indications. The planning was complicated by the presence of an intramedullary Küntscher femoral nail inserted after a motorcycle incident approximately 60 years ago. After fenestration of the proximal lateral femur, the nail was sawn off and a cemented total hip arthroplasty and plate osteosynthesis were performed.

PURPOSE: To present a case report on a patient with retinal complications from a carotid-cavernous fistula.
METHODS: Observational case report.
RESULTS: A 26-year-old patient sustained head trauma following a motorcycle accident. Examination and retinal imaging demonstrated a venous stasis retinopathy with cystoid macular edema. The edema resolved with aflibercept, but not with bevacizumab.
CONCLUSION: The patient was diagnosed with venous stasis retinopathy secondary to carotid-cavernous fistula. Pathologic findings completely resolved with appropriate management.

A case of bilateral inguinal dislocation of the testes in a motorcycle accident is reported and its pathogenesis is described. The injury probably results from the gasoline tank striking the perineum and the scrotum in the midline, causing upward and outward displacement of the testes and forcible herniation of the gonads through the coverings of the spermatic cord.
