Mycobacterium bovis is responsible for a zoonosis originating in cattle. This disease has rarely affected man in industrialised countries since the establishment of veterinary surveillance in cattle. We report the case of a young female patient who developed a Mycobacterium bovis primary infection revealed by erythema nodosum. Infection was probably due to the consumption of non-pasteurised milk in Morocco. This clinical manifestation is rare and physicians ought to be aware of this imported pathology.

Aerobic (5-day-old cultures) and nonreplicating (dormant) Mycobacterium tuberculosis (5-, 12-, and 19-day-old cultures) bacteria were treated with rifampin (R), moxifloxacin (MX), metronidazole (MZ), amikacin (AK), or capreomycin (CP) for 7, 14, and 21 days. R-MX-MZ-AK and R-MX-MZ-CP killed both aerobic and dormant bacilli in 21 days, as shown by lack of regrowth in solid and liquid media. R-MX-MZ-AK and R-MX-MZ-CP also caused a strong decrease of nonreplicating bacilli in 7 days in a cell-based dormancy model.

An adult female red-faced black spider monkey (Ateles paniscus), housed for 2 years in the Parque Estoril Zoo in São Paulo, Brazil, showed apathy. Clinical examination revealed discrete emaciation, swelling and induration of lymph nodes, and presence of a mass in the abdominal cavity. Therapies with enrofloxacin, azithromycin, and ceftiofur were ineffective. The animal died after 6 months. Optimal levels of ftsZ gene product are shown to be required for initiation of the cell division process in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Sarcoidosis is a chronic disease characterised by the development and accumulation of granulomas in multiple organs. We report two observations of disseminated Mycobacterium genavense infection in patients with proven sarcoidosis. High fever and abdominal pain appeared at 8 and 18 months following the initiation of immunosuppressive therapy. We report here a simplified method for the detection of nasal carriage of Mycobacterium leprae. DNA extracted from nasal swabs was analyzed by PCR, and M. leprae specific amplicons detected by means of a novel peptide-nucleic-acid-ELISA (PNA-ELISA) method. A 48-yr-old female on immunosuppressive therapy for fibrosing alveolitis and polymyositis developed a septic arthritis of the left middle finger proximal interphalangeal joint, tenosynovitis of the left palm and osteomyelitis of the right hindfoot due to infection with Mycobacterium marinum.
