In the tropics, the botfly Dermatobia hominis and the NWS Cochliomyia hominivorax are the most important myiasis agents in cattle. It is frequently reported that furuncular lesions due to D. hominis are a predisposing cause for screwworm myiasis. Our results pointed out that only 5.2 to 7.4% of C. hominivorax gravid females oviposited in the offered furuncular lesions. Of 3242 eggs layed on botfly lesions (BFL), only 82 (2.5%) developed to second instar and died. In the flies tested, the furuncular lesions due to Dermatobia were used as food supply in 81.3% of the cases. In our opinion, the ro…

•This is a very rare case of aural Cochliomyia hominivorax diagnosed in a pediatric-traveler outside endemic area.•Unlike common travelers' myiasis, Cochliomyia hominivorax can be invasive and destructive.•Cytochrome-C oxidase-I (COI) DNA-barcoding may be a useful tool for diagnosing rare parasitosis.

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is a parasitic infestation of tissues or body cavities of mammals with dipterous larvae. The patients with diabetic foot ulcers are more vulnerable to acquiring infestation; however, the infestation may be neglected and mistreated in some cases.
METHODS: Data were collected of twelve myiasis cases with diabetic foot ulcers in Nazli-Selim Eren Chronic Wound and Infections Care Unit, Aydin, Turkey between 2017 and 2019. Demographic, clinical characteristics of the patients and clinical examination of the wound were recorded. To morphology-based identification method of the a…

Subcutaneous larvae of Hypoderma spp. (Diptera: Oestridae) were detected in the dorsal region in 10 roe deer, Capreolus capreolus (Artiodact … ; however, further studies to assess the spread of the parasite and to follow the evolution of this myiasis in roe deer are needed.

Myiasis is the infestation of organs and tissues of human being or other vertebrate animals with dipterous larvae. Myiasis is generally rare in humans, especially in children. We present the first case of periungual myiasis by Wohlfahrtia magnifica in a 5-year-old female. Wohlfahrtia magnifica is an obligatory parasite, which has been described as cause of ophthalmomyiasis, otomyiasis, oral myiasis, vulvar myiasis and wound myiasis. Treatment of myiasis and ingrown toenail is generally non-operative although both entities can be serious and/or non-responsive to conservative therapy.

BACKGROUND: Cranioplasty is a commonly performed procedure for the repair of cranial defects. Various materials have been used for this procedure and have a good safety profile. Human cerebral myiasis is an exceedingly rare condition. It involves the invasion of live or dead human tissues by larvae of the insect species dipterous.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the first case of cerebral myiasis associated with an artificial cranioplasty bone flap. There was delayed cerebral cortex infestation of the species dipterous after cranioplasty with polymethyl methacrylate bone flap. The patient initi…

We report three cases of infection due to the Gram-negative rod Ignatzschineria (Schineria) indica involving bacteremia and the urinary tract. Two cases were clearly associated with maggot infestation, and the third could conceivably have had unrecognized maggot infestation of the urinary tract. We believe these cases to be the first I. indica infections reported in association with maggot infestation and myiasis.

A 57-year-old woman with a history of atypical intracranial meningioma had undergone multiple craniotomies and endoscopic skull base procedures over several years. She presented most recently with nasal discharge consisting of intranasal larvae. Isolated organisms from the nasal cavity and maxillary sinus were identified as blow fly larvae (Calliphoridae family). The patient was treated with transnasal debridement and antibiotic therapy. The organisms were successfully eradicated and she is free from further signs of infection. Intranasal myiasis is an unusual complication of anterior skull ba…
