A case report of a rare nasopharyngeal myoepithelial dominant pleomorphic adenoma.

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary gland neoplasm. The majority of cases occur in the major salivary glands; however, they can also originate from the minor salivary glands. The nasopharynx is an uncommon site, but it has been reported in the literature. The characteristic difference of our report from the literature is the young age of our patient and his previous unremarkable medical or surgical history. The objective of this report is to present a case of salivary gland pleomorphic adenoma, discuss radiological and histopathological findings and treatment o

Crescentic postinfectious glomerulonephritis in an adult patient with juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Crescentic glomerulonephritis is usually associated with an acute nephritic syndrome with rapidly declining renal function. Postinfectious cases usually have a higher possibility of recovery. Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare, locally aggressive tumour affecting mostly young men. A 28-year-old man presented with recurrent JNA initially excised 2 years prior. The patient was initially managed as a case of airway obstruction and pneumonia. He developed tea-coloured urine, oedema and acute kidney failure requiring dialysis while awaiting surgery. Urine and immunological studies

Electron microscopy of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma: clinical and histopathological correlates.

BACKGROUND: The histological and electron-microscopic (EM) characteristics of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) have been described but no study has compared them with one another or with clinical features. The objective is to compare ultrastructural characteristics of JNA with clinical parameters. METHODS: This prospective study included histology of 21 samples of which only 13 underwent transmission-EM. Four clinical parameters (age, duration, epistaxis, recurrence), three radiological-staging, 13 histological and 15 EM characteristics were considered. A descriptive analysis for as

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma misdiagnosed as pituitary tumor with multiple cranial neuropathies.

Multiple cranial neuropathies have been reported in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is an uncommon cause of multiple cranial nerve palsies. However, it is difficult to diagnose at the early stage; furthermore, it can be easily misdiagnosed as inflammation, pituitary tumor, etc. A 38-year-old female patient had an ipsilateral 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th cranial nerves injury in this study. She was successively misdiagnosed with nonspecific inflammation and pituitary tumor. More than 1 year later, she was diagnosed with invasive nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

A Case of Nasopharyngeal Mycobacteriosis with Bony Erosion of the External Skull Base.

Primary nasopharyngeal mycobacteriosis is a rare disease. We present a case in which skull base bone erosion appeared and was alleviated during the course of the treatment. Bone complications occur in osteoarticular mycobacteriosis, but their occurrence in primary nasopharyngeal mycobacteriosis has not been reported. A 77-year-old immunocompromised Asian woman presented with a right occipitotemporal headache. An ulcerative mass covered with a thick yellowish discharge was found in the roof and posterior walls of the right nasopharynx. Because histopathological examination indicated the presenc

Atypical metastasis of nasopharyngeal cancer: noncontiguous spread to the ipsilateral ear.

OBJECTIVES: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare form of squamous cell carcinoma. Primary NPC is generally treated with radiation and chemotherapy, though recurrence and distant metastases are common. Reports of noncontiguous metastasis to the middle ear and external ear canal (EAC) are rare. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Case presentation of a female patient previously treated for NPC, who developed an EAC metastasis. A literature review of all reported cases of metastatic NPC in the middle ear and EAC is also included. RESULTS: A patient presenting with noncontiguous metastasis of NPC to the

Using 3D-printed nose models in nasopharyngeal swab training.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has swept across the globe with massive effects on health care systems as well as global economies. Enhanced testing has been put forward as a means to reduce transmission while awaiting the development of targeted therapy or effective vaccination. However, achieving accurate testing necessitates proper nasopharyngeal swab techniques. METHODS AND RESULTS: We aimed to design and investigate the utility of an anatomically accurate three-dimensional (3D) printed model of the nose in the training for nasopharyngeal swabs. These models were implemented during trai

3D-printed simulator for nasopharyngeal swab collection for COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Testing for COVID-19 is a cornerstone of pandemic control. If conducted inappropriately, nasopharyngeal swab collection can be painful and preanalytical sample collection errors may lead to false negative results. Our objective was to develop a realistic and easily available synthetic simulator for nasopharyngeal swab collection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The nasopharyngeal swab collection simulator was designed through different development steps: segmentation, computer-aided design (CAD), and 3D printing. The model was 3D printed using PolyJet technology, which allows multi-mater

Effect of HIF-1αsiRNA-linked AuNRs on radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

The radiation sensitivity of tumor cells is closely related to tumor cell hypoxia. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is considered a key transcription factor which regulates the sensitivity of hypoxic tumor cells to radiotherapy. On the other hand, some studies have shown that gold nanomaterials improve radiation sensitivity. However, studies on the effect of gold nanomaterials carrying HIF-1αsiRNA on tumor radiotherapy, and the underlying mechanisms are limited. Thus, the present study was aimed at investigating the effect of gold nanocomposites (AuNRs) carrying HIF-1αsiRNA (AuNRs-HIF-1αsi

Management Options for Patients With Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Undergoing Cochlear Implantation.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implantation (CI) has been successfully used to restore hearing in patients with severe to profound hearing loss. In addition to hearing loss, irradiated patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) also often have chronic otitis media and Eustachian tube (ET) dysfunction. These features may result in difficulties in CI. We conducted this study to review the management options for irradiated patients with NPC undergoing CI. Furthermore, we investigated the results of CI in irradiated patients with NPC with chronic otitis media and obstructive ET dysfunction, accordingly to
