[Surgical treatment of a perianal giant condyloma acuminata in a HIV patient].

Buschke-Löwenstein tumor is a slowly growing neoplasm with high potential of local invasion. We described a 29 year-old female with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome who was surgically treated for a Buschke- Löwenstein tumor with a wide local excision, bilateral gluteal flaps and loop ileostomy. At 12 months follow-up, there was no evidence of recurrence. Despite it does not metastasize, Buschke-Löwenstein tumor has a high recurrence rate and a 50% risk of malignant transformation into squamous cell carcinoma. Surgery is considered the treatment of choice for this disease. Podophyllin, immuno

Blastomatous tumor with teratoid features of nasal cavity: report of a case and review of the literature.

A case of blastomatous tumor with teratoid features is presented. The polypoid mass was observed in the left nasal cavity of a 72-year-old man. Histologically, the lesion was composed of neuroepithelial cells with blastomatous appearance, cystic squamous nests filled with keratin materials, many mucous glands, complex tubular and glandular structures with edematous fibroblastic stroma. Sinonasal neoplasms including teratoid components and immature neuroepithelium are exceedingly rare. We suggest that the term 'immature teratoma' is more suitable than blastoma or blastomatous tumor when there i

Squamous cell carcinoma of the canine nasal planum: eight cases (1988-1994).

Squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal planum was diagnosed in eight dogs between March 1988 and January 1994. Epistaxis, sneezing, and ulceration or swelling of the nasal planum were the most common presenting complaints. Although no evidence of metastasis was identified, the primary tumor in all cases was locally invasive with extensive involvement of underlying tissues. Advanced imaging procedures performed in three cases indicated that physical examination may underestimate the local extent of the neoplasm. Euthanasia was performed in six cases due to progressive neoplastic disease with wors

Clinical significance of p27 and Skp2 protein expression in uterine cervical neoplasm.

The loss of p27 indicates a poor prognosis in various solid tumors, and a decrease in p27 level is the result of increased degradation by Skp2. We evaluated the relationship of p27 and Skp2 protein expression to various clinicopathologic factors in 332 cases of untreated uterine cervical neoplasm using tissue microarray method. After immunohistochemical staining, 313 and 300 tumor samples were retrieved for interpretation for p27 and Skp2, respectively. High p27 protein expression (nuclear staining in more than 30% of the tumor cells) was seen in 39.9% (125/313 cases), including 32 cervical in

Olfactory neuroblastoma in a domestic cat and review of the literature.

Nasal tumors account for less than 10% of all feline neoplasms, with lymphoma, followed by adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma, the most commonly reported. Nasal neuroectodermal tumors, including olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB), are scarcely described, and their tumorigenesis is largely unknown. Here we report the cytological, histological, and immunohistochemical features of a feline ONB. We also provide a pathological review of nasal neuroendocrine neoplasms in cats. A 7-year-old Burmese cat was evaluated for sneezing, occasional epistaxis, and upper respiratory noise for 8 months. Com

Prevalence of human papillomavirus DNA in cutaneous neoplasms from renal allograft recipients supports a possible viral role in tumour promotion.

It is well established that renal allograft recipients (RARs) have an increased incidence of viral warts and premalignant and malignant cutaneous lesions, and the risk of their development increases in proportion to duration of graft survival. It has been postulated that, in addition to the effects of prolonged immunosuppression and previous sun exposure, human papillomaviruses (HPV) may also contribute to the carcinogenic process. In this study, the prevalence of HPV DNA was examined in a range of premalignant and malignant cutaneous tumours from 50 immunosuppressed patients (47 renal allogra

Inverted ductal papilloma: report of a rare case and review of the literature.

Inverted ductal papilloma is an uncommon benign papillary endophytic tumor. This report aimed to present a case of inverted ductal papilloma of the oral cavity. A 54-year-old female patient presented with an asymptomatic nodular lesion on the lower lip. Time of duration was undetermined. The diagnostic hypotheses were fibrous hyperplasia and benign mesenchymal neoplasm. An excisional biopsy was performed, and microscopic examination showed an endophytic proliferation of squamous cells with the presence of microcysts, and goblet cells arranged in nest and islands. No cellular atypia was observe

Photodynamic therapy for cutaneous verrucous carcinoma.

Cutaneous verrucous carcinoma is a low-grade and well-differentiated variant of squamous cell carcinoma. This rare neoplasm follows a seemingly indolent progression and exhibits a low metastatic potential. Photodynamic therapy relies on the selective intratumoral cell accumulation and photoactivation of a photosensitizer, leading to the generation of phototoxic compounds responsible for necrosis and apoptosis of the target cells. An 82-year-old man presenting with a large long-standing verrucous carcinoma on the leg was treated successfully by 6 photodynamic therapy sessions administered at we

Use of Ber-EP4 protein in recurrent metastatic basal cell carcinoma: a case report and review of the literature.

The occurrence of metastatic basal cell carcinoma (MBCC) is extremely low, ranging from 0.0028 to 0.5%. We present a rare case report of MBCC in a 57-year-old Caucasian male with a known history of numerous nonmelanoma cutaneous neoplasms. The patient presented with a large ulcerated right axillary mass that recurred 2 months after an initial BCC was resected from the same site. An excisional biopsy of the recurrent mass and regional lymph nodes showed atypical basaloid cells with hyperchromatic nuclei, stromal retraction and rare squamous features in the soft tissue and lymph node. The tumor

Peripheral ameloblastoma of the gingiva.

Peripheral Ameloblastoma (PA) is a benign odontogenic tumor, arising from the cell rest of Serres, reduced enamel epithelium and basal cells of the surface epithelium. Peripheral ameloblastoma is a rare odontogenic neoplasm occurring commonly in the mandibular gingiva. PA clinically resembles other peripherally occurring lesions like pyogenic granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, and squamous papilloma. The recurrence rate of PA is 16-19% which demands a straight follow up. We report a case of recurrent peripheral ameloblastoma occurring in a 72-year old mal

Primary bone carcinosarcoma of the fibula with chondrosarcoma and squamous cell carcinoma components.

Carcinosarcoma is defined as a malignant neoplasm that is composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. The occurrence of carcinosarcoma in the bone is extremely rare. In this report, we describe the third documented de novo case of carcinosarcoma of the bone. A 59-year-old Japanese female presented with a painful tumor in her right lower leg. Plane radiography revealed an osteolytic destructive lesion with periosteal reaction and mineralization in the right fibula. Resection of the fibula tumor was performed under a clinical diagnosis of chondrosarcoma. Histopathological study re

Immunohistochemical study of p16 INK4A and survivin expressions in cervical squamous neoplasm.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer affecting Malaysian women. Despite the implementation of pap smear screening, many women are still diagnosed only in the advanced stage of cervical cancer. This could partly be due to failure of detection of its precursor lesions; hence the need to search for novel biomarkers to assist in the screening and diagnosis of cervical neoplasia. This study aims to determine the expression of p16INK4A and survivin as possible predictive biomarkers in cervical squamous neoplasm. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study on 201 ca

p63 expression profiles in human normal and tumor tissues.

PURPOSE: The p63 gene, located on chromosome 3q27-28, is a member of the p53 gene family. The product encoded by the p63 gene has been reported to be essential for normal development. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: In this study, we examined the expression pattern of p63 in human normal and tumor tissues by immunohistochemistry using a monoclonal antibody (clone 4A4) that recognizes all p63 splice variants, and by reverse transcription-PCR using isoform-specific primers. RESULTS: We found that p63 expression was restricted to the nucleus, with a nucleoplasmic pattern. We also observed that the express

A carcinoma showing thymus-like elements of the thyroid arising in close association with solid cell nests: evidence for a precursor lesion?

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma showing thymus-like elements (CASTLE) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland, morphologically and immunohistologically similar to a thymic carcinoma, whose histogenesis is still debated. Hypotheses include an origin from ectopic thymic tissue, vestige of the thymopharyngeal duct, or branchial pouch remnants from which solid cell nests (SC-nests) originate. The diagnosis of CASTLE may be treacherous due to its rarity and its propensity to mimic other poorly differentiated tumors such as squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: We present a case of CASTLE in a 58-year-

Mendelian randomization analysis reveals genetic evidence for a causal link between inflammatory bowel disease and uterine cervical neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been reported to be associated with risk of uterine cervical neoplasm. We aimed to evaluate the causal relationship between IBD and uterine cervical neoplasm using a bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis. METHODS: We derived instrumental variables for IBD, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, from the IEU Open genome-wide association study (GWAS) database, and for the histological subtypes of uterine cervical neoplasm from the FinnGen repository's GWAS data. The collected GWAS data predominantly represent individuals of Eu

Squamoid Eccrine Ductal Carcinoma of the Eyelid: Clinicopathologic Correlation of a Case.

Squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma (SEDC) is a rare cutaneous neoplasm that often manifests as a plaque or nodule in sun-exposed areas of older patients. Herein, the authors report the first case of SEDC in the eyelid. A 76-year-old man presented with a 2.5 × 1.5 mm area of left upper eyelid erythema, thickening, ulceration, and scaling with madarosis superotemporally just above the lash line. Full-thickness wedge biopsy demonstrated irregular epithelial tubules with nuclear atypia and focal squamous differentiation, consistent with SEDC. The patient underwent Mohs resection and has had no recu

A RETROSPECTIVE SURVEY OF NEOPLASIA IN MANAGED GIRAFFES (GIRAFFA CAMELOPARDALIS).

Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) are commonly managed in zoos and conservation programs worldwide, but the current understanding of the occurrence and progression of neoplastic disease in this species is limited by the scarcity of published reports. This study collated documented cases of neoplasia on the basis of gross and histologic evaluation of ante- and postmortem samples. In total, 30 giraffes from 22 institutions across the United States were included. Subspecies was not reported in all cases, but those identified included Masai (Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi), Rothschild (Giraf
