BACKGROUND: Renal artery bleeding is an uncommon but clinically important complication of surgery, percutaneous procedures, and trauma. Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used; however, indeterminate findings or concerns regarding iodinated contrast can delay hemostasis in some cases. Bedside contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) may provide real-time information to support triage to angiography and embolization. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe four hemodynamically stable patients: post-nephrectomy, post-percutaneous nephrolithotomy, post-biopsy, and blunt trauma. CT was indeterminate in t

INTRODUCTION: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a rare but serious complication following percutaneous nephrostomy. While more commonly observed after nephrolithotomy, it can also occur with prolonged nephrostomy placement or complicated procedures. Early diagnosis and management are critical for preventing life-threatening complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old female with recurrent bilateral urolithiasis, right heart failure, poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease presented with right flank pain, fever, and fatigue. She had previously undergone right double-J st

To explore the preference for diagnosing and treating renal colic during pregnancy among Chinese urologists. A questionnaire was designed using the Sojump® platform. WeChat, the largest social networking platform in China, was used to distribute the questionnaire to urologists at hospitals of all levels in China. In total, 110 responses were included. Of the respondents, 100.0% used ultrasound to diagnose renal colic during pregnancy, followed by magnetic resonance imaging (17.3%) and low-dose CT (3.6%). Phloroglucinol (80.9%) and progesterone (72.7%) were the most commonly used antispasmodics

Urgent detection of calculous pyonephrosis is crucial for surgical planning and preventing severe outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the performance of computed tomography (CT)-based radiomics and a three-dimensional convolutional neural network (3D-CNN) model, integrated with independent clinical factors, to identify patients with calculous pyonephrosis. We recruited 182 patients receiving either percutaneous nephrostomy tube placement or percutaneous nephrolithotomy for calculous hydronephrosis or pyonephrosis. The regions of interest were manually delineated on plain CT images and the CT

To compare operative efficiency and perioperative outcomes between low-power (LP) and high-power (HP) holmium: yttrium aluminum-garnet (Ho: YAG) laser strategies in suction-assisted mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mini-PCNL), we conducted a prospective randomized controlled trial including 100 adult patients with renal calculi randomized 1:1 to LP (n = 50) or HP (n = 50) settings. All procedures were performed using suction-assisted mini-PCNL. The primary outcome was total operative time, with secondary outcomes including laser activation time, total laser energy, energy density, ablation s

We present the case of a 71-year-old Hispanic woman with a 4-cm stone in the renal pelvis of a kidney with thin parenchyma. Retrograde pyelography revealed a normal ureter and normal ureteropelvic junction. A ureteral stent was placed. Six weeks after the stent was placed, a differential renal scan revealed 18% function of the involved kidney. A percutaneous nephrolithotomy was not performed because of the thin parenchyma and intrarenal anatomy, which would have complicated access. The patient underwent an uncomplicated laparoscopic pyelolithotomy. The stone was placed into an Endocatch entrap

UNLABELLED: Renal duplication anomalies are one of the most frequent congenital urological conditions in the general population all over the world. Bilateral incomplete duplication, however, is exceedingly rare. We present a case of a 29-year-old female with bilateral incomplete duplex kidneys complicated by mid-ureteric stenosis on the right side and calculi in the left ureter and upper moiety of the left duplex kidney. Diagnostic imaging, including ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and intravenous urography (IVU) confirmed these findings. The patient underwent successful bilateral ureter

A 39-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with kidney stones after kidney transplantation. Kidney, ureter, and bladder radiographs showed multiple stones in the transplanted and orthotopic kidneys, which had not been reported previously. Owing to the larger size of the stones in the transplanted kidney, they needed to be removed. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy and ureteroscopy were performed under B-mode ultrasound guidance. The stone measured 1.9 × 1.6 cm and was located under the calyx of the kidney. A titanium laser fiber was used to dissolve the stones, which were subsequently removed.

Although percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a gold standard treatment of large kidney stones, vascular injuries like pseudoaneurysm (PA) and arteriovenous fistula (AVF) may occur due to renal punctures. These endovascular complications need urgent intervention to be diagnosed and managed early. In this case series, 14 patients who had hematuria after PCNL were managed by using angiography to identify the vascular pathology. Among them, we identified 10 patients with PA and 4 patients with AVF, 1 patient with both subscapular hematoma and PA. Angiographic embolization was done successfully

Among congenital renal anomalies, the ectopic kidney is a rare occurrence. Crossed fused renal ectopia (CFRE) - an even rarer subtype of ectopic kidney - is characterized by both kidneys being fused together on one side of the spine. CFRE is usually asymptomatic but can present with vague symptoms if the anomalous kidney becomes infected, is obstructed by calculus, or has a neoplastic change. There is no indication for surgical intervention if the kidney functions normally. This report presents a case of CFRE in a 31-year-old male with recurrent right flank pain resulting from a large calculus

The authors present their results with the treatment of nephrolithiasis of the lower calix using the method of extracorporeal lithotripsy with the Czech apparatus Medilit M-5. In 310 patients they made 452 operations and checked the therapeutic results three months after the last session. For checking they used a native nephrogram and examination by ultrasound. With the increasing size of concrements the effectiveness declined and thus also the success of ESWL(in concrements above 20 mm in size it declined to 30%). This is not due only to the size of the concrement but also its site in the low

A 24-year-old female with neurogenic bladder due to spina bifida consulted our department for further evaluation and treatment of a left renal stone. She innately voided urine by Crede's method. At the age of 15 years, intermittent self-catheterization was started because left severe hydronephrosis was found. At the age of 19 years, cystostomy was performed because of low compliance bladder and an aggravation of hydronephrosis in spite of intermittent catheterization. Thereafter, she was referred to our department for further evaluation and treatment of a left renal stone since the stone was i

To investigate the diagnostic value of Monocyte Distribution Width (MDW) in urosepsis. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 250 patients with Urolithiasis who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Among these, 53 were diagnosed with postoperative urosepsis, and 18 had poor prognoses. MDW, Procalcitonin (PCT), and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) levels were measured 24 h post-operation.. MDW, PCT, and CRP levels were significantly elevated in urosepsis patients compared to non-sepsis patients (all p < 0.0001). MDW levels were significantly higher in patients with poor prognoses (P < 0.00

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), although an accepted treatment modality in anatomically normal kidneys, is still not universally performed for calculi in pelvic ectopic kidneys. Fear of injury to abdominal viscera makes it a technically challenging procedure.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We have performed PCNL in nine patients with calculi in pelvic ectopic kidneys. Technical factors which made this procedure safe include ultrasound-guided puncture, use of a mature tract or an Amplatz sheath, routine postoperative double-J stenting, and nephrostogram prior to nephrostomy tube remova

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy remains the standard treatment for renal calculi larger than 2 cm; however, giant renal pelvic stones are often associated with the need for multiple tracts or staged procedures and carry risks of bleeding, sepsis, and residual fragments. We report the case of a 60-year-old man who presented with chronic left flank pain and burning micturition. Imaging demonstrated preserved renal function with a 5.2-cm solitary left renal pelvic calculus. The patient underwent transperitoneal laparoscopic pyelolithotomy using a 3-port approach, which enabled complete en bloc stone

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Achieving proper renal access is arguably the most challenging component of percutaneous nephrolithotomy. A core skill required during this procedure is the use of C-arm fluoroscopic imaging and parallax techniques for proper needle insertion into a predetermined calyceal papilla. The trainers available for these skills include virtual reality (VR) simulators and physical models requiring actual fluoroscopy and radiation exposure precautions. In this study we present the successful proof-of-concept of a low-cost physical fluoro-less C-arm trainer (CAT) for training

PURPOSE: We evaluated the outcomes of percutaneous treatment and metabolic evaluation of calyceal diverticula with associated stones.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified 51 patients with a calyceal diverticulum in our prospectively maintained percutaneous nephrolithotomy database. Patients with complete data were separated into 14 with stones isolated to the diverticulum and 15 with renal stones in and outside the diverticulum. A total of 571 patients with renal stones but no diverticulum were used for comparison. Statistical differences were assessed using the chi-square tes
