Effect of traction force during surgery on physical integrity and histological changes in peripheral nerves: experimental study on rabbits.

Sensory and motor nerve damage is a common complication of maxillofacial surgery and trauma. Procedures such as orthognathic surgery, tumor resection, and salivary gland interventions can damage peripheral nerves when the surrounding soft tissue or the nerve itself is manipulated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histological changes in the sciatic and median nerves of albino rabbits following traction-induced nerve injury. Nine albino rabbits were included in the study and divided equally into three groups, with three rabbits per group. In each rabbit, four peripheral nerves were

Investigation into effects of tocilizumab and epoetin beta in rats with experimental sciatic nerve injury model.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of tocilizumab (TCZ), epoetin beta (EPO), and their combination on nerve regeneration in a sciatic ner … peroxidation and oxidative stress parameters were evaluated biochemically in the serum, and sciatic nerve tissue was evaluated histopathologically using haematoxylin-Eosin and Masson trichrome staining. CONCLUSIONS: TCZ and EPO decreased nerve injury effects by increasing motor and sensory conduction velocities of the sciatic nerve. Biochemically, TCZ and EPO …

The short- and long-term effects of Seprafilm on peripheral nerves: a histological and functional study.

Extraneural scar reduction is an important goal in peripheral nerve microsurgery. The use of biosynthetic materials, such as Seprafilm , reduces postoperative adhesions in abdominopelvic gynecologic and orthopedic surgery. The study evaluates the safety of Seprafilm in proximity to nerve tissue in a noninjury (phase 1) and injury (phase 2) model. Phase 1 groups were: (1) sciatic nerve exposure and neurolysis (n = 15), (2) Seprafilm placement superficial to the nerve (n = 15), and (3) circumferentially wrapping Seprafilm around the nerve (n = 15). Outcome measures at 45 and 90 days included wou…

Collagen nerve conduits--assessment of biocompatibility and axonal regeneration.

Bridging of nerve gaps is still a major problem in peripheral nerve surgery. Alternatively to autologous nerve grafts tissue engineering of peripheral nerves focuses on biocompatible conduits to reconstruct nerves. Such non-neural conduits fail to support regeneration over larger gaps due to lacking viable Schwann cells that promote regeneration by producing growth factors and cell guiding molecules. This problem may be overcome by implantation of cultivated Schwann cells into suitable scaffolds. In the present experiments we tested a collagen type I/III tube as a potential nerve guiding matri

Ultrasound of nerve and muscle.

Over the last two decades, ultrasound has developed into a useful technology for the evaluation of diseases of nerve and muscle. Since it is currently not used at by the majority of clinicians involved in diagnosis or care of patients with neuromuscular disorders, this review briefly describes the technical aspects of ultrasound and its physical principles. It relates normal muscle anatomy and movement to ultrasound images in the axial and sagittal planes and follows with a discussion of ultrasound findings in chronic muscle disease. These include evident atrophy and the loss of the hypoechoic

In situ analysis of neuronal dynamics and positional cues in the patterning of nerve connections.

Recently developed imaging techniques permit individual cells to be uniquely labeled and followed over time as development proceeds in intact vertebrate embryos. Small groups of cells in the developing eye rudiment of the frog Xenopus have been labeled with the vital dyes DiI, lysinated fluorescein dextran (LFD) or lysinated rhodamine dextran (LRD). Individual optic axons and their growth cones were clearly visible in the intact living animal using confocal microscopy or epifluorescence microscopy with a low light level video camera and computer-based video image enhancement. To follow the dyn

Efficacy of using adipose-derived stem cells and PRP on regeneration of 40 -mm long sciatic nerve defect bridged by polyglycolic-polypropylene mesh in canine model.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Sciatic nerve repair becomes a focus of research in neurological aspect to restore the normal physical ability of the animal to stand and walk. Tissue engineered nerve grafts (TENGs) provide a promising alternative therapy for regeneration of large gap defects. The present study investigates the regenerative capacity of PRP, ADSCs, and PRP mixed ADSCs on a long sciatic nerve defect (40-mm) bridged by a polyglycolic polypropylene (PGA-PRL) mesh which acts as a neural scaffold. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 12 adult male mongrel dogs that were randomly divided in

Chitosan conduit combined with hyaluronic acid prevent sciatic nerve scar in a rat model of peripheral nerve crush injury.

In the present study, the effects of hyaluronic acid (HA) combined with chitosan conduit on peripheral nerve scarring and regeneration were investigated in a rat model of peripheral nerve crush injury. A total of 60 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly distributed into four groups (15 rats in each group), in which the nerve was either not treated (control group) or treated with chitosan conduit, hyaluronic acid, or chitosan conduit coupled with hyaluronic acid following clamp injury to the sciatic nerve. The surgical sites were evaluated by assessing the sciatic functional index, the degree of sc

The Glyco-Code Molecular Template Instructively Guides Skeletal and Neural Development, Tissue Regeneration and Dynamic Repair Responses Following Trauma and Disease.

Glycosaminoglycans encode instructional information that cells can decipher to regulate tissue development, repair responses, regeneration and recovery of tissue function following trauma or disease. This information has been termed the glyco-code and is a road map for tissue development and repair. This review shows that a clearer understanding of the glyco-code will support improved strategies in repair biology, particularly in skeletal and neural repair, regeneration, and therapeutic biomaterial design. Emerging therapeutic approaches for peripheral nerve repair increasingly combine multimo

Multiple roles of the actin and microtubule-regulating formins in the developing brain.

Dynamic control of the actin and microtubule cytoskeletons underlie nearly every critical process during neural development, and requires multiple dimensions of regulation. Formins are a family of fifteen proteins that functions as a major class of linear actin nucleators and regulates both actin and microtubule dynamics. The fact that several closely-related formins show complementary expression patterns during neural development and non-overlapping cytoskeletal functions indicates the need to identify the specialized cellular activities of individual formin members in different neural cell s

Protein aggregation and pathogenesis of Huntington's disease: mechanisms and correlations.

The formation of insoluble protein aggregates is a hallmark of Huntington's disease (HD) and related neurodegenerative disorders, such as dentatorubral pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA), spinal bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) and the spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) type 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7. These disorders are caused by an expanded polyglutamine (polyQ) tract in otherwise unrelated proteins. They are characterized by late-onset, selective neuropathology, a pathogenic polyQ threshold and a relationship between polyQ length and disease progression. Thus, molecular models of HD and related glutamine-repeat

Adhesion and signaling in axonal fasciculation.

Numerous in vitro assays and in vivo perturbation studies have led to a model of neural development in which selective fasciculation helps to define accurate axonal projections. Genetic analysis in vivo confirms the hypothesis that axonal fasciculation and defasciculation are controlled by adhesion mechanisms, but also suggests that, in many cases, adhesion and guidance are separable phenomena. In addition, receptors that control the level of tyrosine phosphorylation may play an important role in fasciculation, suggesting that complex intracellular pathways lie just beneath the surface.
