This article investigates the life success at ages 32 and 48 of four categories of males: nonoffenders, adolescence-limited offenders (convi … ich nonoffenders would onset after age 21 were poor housing and low nonverbal IQ at ages 8-10, high neuroticism at age 16, and anti-establishment attitudes and motoring convictions at age 18. It was suggested that nervousness and neuroticism may have protected children at risk from offending in adolescence and the teenage years.

Decreases in State and Trait Anxiety Post-psilocybin: A Naturalistic, Observational Study Among Retreat Attendees.

Anxiety disorders are the most common type of psychiatric disorders among Western countries. Evidence-based treatment modalities including p … g facet of the mindfulness scale was increased ( d ¯ = 1.5; p = 0.03), while the personality trait neuroticism decreased ( d ¯ = 5.2; p = 0.005), when compared to baseline. Additionally, we found ratings of ego dissolution (mean: 59.7, SD: 28.3) and changes in neuroticism to be the strongest predictors of reductions in state and trait anxiety, respectively. …

Psychiatric genetic liability is associated with the severity of COVID-19 and other acute respiratory infections: an observational study across five Northern European countries.

BACKGROUND: Pre-existing psychiatric disorders have been associated with the severity of acute respiratory infections, including COVID-19, p … te illness phase. Polygenic scores (PGSs) for eight psychiatric disorders and the personality trait neuroticism indexed genetic liability. Meta-analysed estimates from stepwise-adjusted regression analyses controlling for education, lifestyle, and psychiatric and somatic diagnosis history were used to assess associations between PGSs and acute respiratory inf …

Intersection of Big Five Personality Traits and Substance Use on Social Media Discourse: AI-Powered Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits are known predictors of substance use (SU), but their expression and association with SU in digital discourse … ictors of being a substance user. In stark contrast to the conventional self-medication hypothesis, neuroticism emerged as a robust protective factor against SU (OR 0.29, 95% CI 0.26-0.31). This counterintuitive finding was supported by a decreased association between neuroticism and SU posts at the pandemic's onset in 2020 (Cohen d=-0.13, 95% CI) and a negat …

METHOD: Participants were middle-aged and older adults (N > 40,000; Age-range: 23-104, Mean Age = 65.52) from seven cohort studies from the US, England, and Japan. In each sample, personality, demographic factors, disease burden, depressive symptoms, and pain were assessed at baseline. Pain was assessed again 5 to 15 years later. RESULTS: Random-effects meta-analyses indicated that neuroticism was associated with higher likelihood of concur…

Evidence for strong genetic correlations among internalizing psychopathology and related self-reported measures using both genomic and twin/adoptive approaches.

The internalizing construct captures shared variance underlying risk for mood and anxiety disorders. Internalizing factors based on diagnoses (or symptoms) of major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are well established. Studies have also integrated self-reported measures of associated traits (e.g., questionnaires assessing neuroticism, worry, and rumination) onto these factors, despite having not tested the assumption that these measures truly capture the same sets of risk factors. This study examined the overlap among both sets of measures using converging appr…

The correlates of binge eating in two nonpatient samples.

Binge eating in two nonpatient samples was examined as a function of actual body weight (expressed as BMI), attempts to control eating, food/weight preoccupation, and neuroticism. All of these factors were univariately associated with binge eating, but multivariate analyses indicated that food/weight preoccupation was the most powerful predictor, accounting for much of the common variance shared by the various correlates. This replicates previous work and suggests that the dynamics of subclinical bingeing are substantially similar to that found in the full DSM-III-R syndrome of bulimia nervosa…

Personality traits and blood-based biomarkers of neurodegeneration and astrogliosis.

The personality traits neuroticism and conscientiousness are associated with the risk of clinical dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Less is known about the association between personality and biological markers of the underlying brain pathology. This study examined the relationship between Five-Factor Model personality traits and blood-based biomarkers of neuroaxonal injury (Neurofilament Light, NfL) and astrogliosis (Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein, GFAP). Participants (N = 4076; mean age 67; 59.9% female; 19.3% cognitively impaired) were from the Health and Retirement Study. Per…
