Melanocytic lesions of the face: diagnostic pitfalls.

The pathologist often has a difficult task in evaluating melanocytic lesions. For lesions involving the face the consequences of misdiagnosis are compounded for both cosmetic and therapeutic reasons. In this article, the pathological features of common and uncommon benign and malignant melanocytic lesions are reviewed and pitfalls in their diagnosis are highlighted. Benign lesions resembling melanomas include regenerating naevus, "irritated" naevus, combined naevus, "ancient naevus", Spitz naevus, dysplastic naevus, halo naevus, variants of blue naevi, balloon and clear cell naevi, neurotised

[Neurocutaneous melanoblastosis].

An observation of a congenital dysontogenetic disease--neurocutaneous melanoblastosis in a 1-year 9-month-old girl is described. The condition was characterized by multiple skin nevi and infiltration of meninges and brain matter with pigment-forming cells. The death occurred from brain damage.

Periocular congenital melanocytic nevi.

Large congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are cutaneous malformations of neural crest origin that have a notorious reputation because of their reported propensity to undergo malignant degeneration. Traditionally, complete surgical excision has been advocated based on the premise that large CMN are a precursor to melanoma. Two cases of large periocular CMN are reported to emphasize the importance of distinguishing them from other congenital skin lesions. Data from the literature support the contention that these pigmented skin lesions spawn malignancies and that prophylactic therapy may be indica

Pigmentary traits, ethnic origin, benign nevi, and family history as risk factors for cutaneous malignant melanoma.

The roles of constitutional factors and benign nevi in causation of malignant melanoma were examined in a case-control study of 511 patients and 511 matched controls in Western Australia. The strongest risk factor was the number of palpable benign nevi on a subject's arms. Compared to the risk of melanomas for persons having no palpable nevi on the arms, the relative risk of melanoma was 2.0 for persons with 1-4 nevi, 4.0 for persons with 5-9 nevi, and 11.3 for persons with 10 or more nevi (P less than .0001). Of the several pigmentary traits known to have associations with melanoma, inability

[Blue naevus of the cervix. 3 case histories (author's transl)].

Anatomo-pathological features of 3 cases of blue naevi of the cervix are presented and discussed together with the literature. Blue naevi of the cervix are localised in the chorion of the endocervical mucus and sometimes even in a polyp, and can be multiple. They are different from benign melanosis or melanocytes which are found in the basal portion of the malpighian epithelium of the exocervix or the vagina. The blue naevus and benign melanosis can rarely give rise to primitive malignant melanomas of the cervix.

Treatment of melanotic freckles by radiotherapy.

Uncomplicated cases of melanotic freckles respond well to radiotherapy with grenz rays. If, however, a conversion into melanoma is in progress or already established, the prognosis is poorer and treatment with harder rays combined with surgical excision should be practiced.

Assessment of vascularity in common blue nevi, small/medium congenital nevocellular, common and dysplastic acquired melanocytic nevi and melanomas: a comparative study.

Angiogenesis and vascularity are researched in melanocytic tumors for their importance in carcinogenesis. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the authors compared the microvascular characteristics between small/medium congenital nevocellular nevi (CN), common blue nevi (BN), common and dysplastic acquired melanocytic nevi (AMN), and melanomas. The authors collected 31 BN, 48 CN (≤5 cm), 35 AMN (14 common, 21 dysplastic), and 26 melanomas. Vessels were stained with factor VIII. Microvascular density (MVD) and total vascular area (TVA), where evaluated in high capillary density are

Risk factors of lentigo maligna as compared to other melanoma subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Lentigo maligna (LM) exhibits a particular epidemiological profile compared to other histopathologic subtypes of melanoma, with a propensity for the head and neck area and a higher mean age at diagnosis. Few small-scale studies have exclusively evaluated the risk factors for the development of LM. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare LM to other histological subtypes of melanoma for the prevalence of known melanoma risk factors, including pigmentary characteristics, history of occupational sun exposure, nevus count, and familial melanoma history. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conduct

Central nervous system magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities and neurologic outcomes in pediatric patients with congenital nevi: A 10-year multi-institutional retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: High-risk congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are associated with abnormalities of the central nervous system (CNS), prompting magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) screening guidelines. OBJECTIVE: Describe MRI brain and spine abnormalities in children with CMN and report trends between nevus features, MRI findings, and neurologic outcomes. METHODS: Retrospective review of individuals aged ≤18 years with an MRI of the brain and/or spine and at least 1 dermatologist-diagnosed CMN. RESULTS: Three hundred fifty-two patients were identified. Forty-six children had CMN that prompted an MRI
