The inherited myotonias are a complex group of diseases caused by variations in genes that encode or modulate the expression of ion channels that regulate muscle excitability. To determine the effects of prophylactic treatment with EACA for blood loss after cardipulmonary bypass surgery, 350 consecutive patients undergoing open-heart surgery were studied. One hundred seventy patients received an initial dose of 5 g of EACA prior to skin incision, followed by intravenous administration of 1 g/h for the next 6 to 8 h. We evaluated the occurrence of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANL) among 1399 women with ovarian cancer who were treated in five randomized clinical trials. This paper reports on a project using a series of single subjects to investigate the effectiveness of using electropalatography (EPG) in treating ten children with persisting speech difficulties of no known organic aetiology. The aims of the project were two-fold, firstly to assess whether the subjects selected benefited from this treatment, and secondly to investigate whether it was possible to predict which children would make maximum improvement.
