Nurses' experiences of change fatigue during healthcare reforms: a qualitative study of psychological distress, impacts, and adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Global healthcare systems are undergoing continuous and rapid transformations aimed at improving service quality and efficiency. As frontline care providers, clinical nurses are directly exposed to frequent organizational changes. Change fatigue has emerged as a significant concern. However, most existing studies have employed quantitative approaches, offering limited insight into nurses' subjective experiences of this phenomenon. This qualitative study, therefore, seeks to explore clinical nurses' lived experiences of change fatigue and the coping strategies they adopt in response

A grounded theory: seeking relief from flatus as relevant client-nurse action and interaction.

Flatus problems are not uncommon among gastroenterological clients and those in other care settings. Yet what clients and nurses do productively about those problems in regard to their actions and interactions and why they do so has not previously been the focus of research. Holistic health management requires trustworthy qualitative evidence to guide best practice in this regard. This study systematically developed a substantive grounded theory that details and explains the trajectory of the basic social process: seeking relief from being discommoded (inconvenienced, troubled) by flatus in th

Evaluating a nurse-managed alcohol withdrawal syndrome pathway: A symptom-triggered protocol study.

AIM: This retrospective, single-center nursing research study evaluates the effectiveness of a standardized, stepwise, nurse-managed protocol for Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS). The primary objective was to determine how nursing process measures-specifically Time to First AWS Assessment-associate with inpatient Length of Stay (LOS). BACKGROUND: AWS significantly affects resource utilization. While symptom-triggered protocols are standard, empirical evidence is needed regarding nurse-managed models that grant autonomy in medication titration. METHODS: We analyzed 419 patients managed under…

Intermittent catheterisation: using a reflective framework.

Intermittent catheterisation is a safe and acceptable method of bladder emptying, however, the impact it has on a patient's quality of life may not be fully appreciated by those involved in teaching the procedure. Reflection after an event allows practitioners to critically examine the experience from the nursing and patient perspective and respond to it in relation to current theory, literature and research.

Empowerment of volunteer nursing service providers during disasters: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Volunteers providing nursing services are among the first individuals to arrive at the scene after an incident; therefore, they must use their skills and capabilities to provide necessary care for the injured to prevent problems from worsening and complications from arising. Consequently, having structured empowerment courses for volunteers before disasters seems essential. This research aimed to determine the dimensions and components of empowering volunteer nursing service providers in disasters. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted using a conventional qualitative cont

Decision-Making Support for an Adult Patient With Severe Congenital Heart Disease: A Case Study.

In critical care, owing to the severity of the illness, it is often difficult to confirm the patient's treatment preferences because of issues with their level of consciousness. Supporting patient decision-making should prioritize confirming patients' wishes. This case study examines an instance in which the focus shifts from family- to patient-centred decision-making. During a multidisciplinary conference in which the medical and nursing team considered delegating treatment decisions to the family, an intervention advocating the necessity of patient-centred decision-making prompted a reconsid

A preventive care approach for oral health in nursing homes: a qualitative study of healthcare workers' experiences.

BACKGROUND: Oral health problems are common among care-dependent older adults living in nursing homes. Developing strategies to prevent the deterioration of oral health is therefore crucial to avoid pain and tooth loss. A standardized work widely used in nursing homes in Sweden is the quality register Senior Alert (SA), which assesses age-related risks concerning e.g. pressure sores, falls, malnutrition and oral health. The oral health assessment is performed with the Revised Oral Assessment Guide-Jönköping (ROAG-J), which also includes planning and implementation of preventive oral care inter

[S2k guidelines of the German Society of Urology. Management and implementation of intermittent catheterization in neurogenic bladder dysfunction].

BACKGROUND: As a considerable heterogeneity in the procedure of intermittent catheterization (IC) was identified by a questionnaire survey conducted in hospitals and institutions for the treatment of patients with spinal cord injury in 2010, it became necessary to standardize the IC procedure (i.e. self-catheterization and assisted catheterization). METHOD: These guidelines were developed within a structured consensus process (e.g. several consensus conferences and nominal group process) by members of the working group on neurourology (Arbeitskreis Neuro-Urologie) and the working group on nur

The meaning of grieving for families living with AIDS.

Parse's research method was used to study the meaning of grieving for families living with AIDS. In videotaped dialogues, diverse families living with AIDS described their experiences of grieving in relation to death and other losses. Narratives of the grieving experiences of each family were constructed. Through the process of extraction-synthesis, the structure of grieving was generated. The four concepts within the structure are explicated in this article as essential in family grieving. Further interpretation led to a theoretical structure of grieving within the human becoming belief syste

COVID-19 negatively impacts on psychological and somatic status in frontline nurses.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has become a public health emergency based on its clinical characteristics. Previous studies demonstrated that the onset of a sudden and immediately life-threatening illness could lead to extraordinary amounts of psychological pressure on nurses who play an important role in the illness. Whether COVID-19 pandemic has greater impacts on the psychological status and somatic symptoms from nurses who stand in the frontline of this crisis remain unclear. METHODS: We evaluated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and somatic symptoms in the frontline nurses (n = 438)

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the scientific evidence on the application of Swanson's Theory of Caring in the process of invasive mechanical ventilation weaning in Intensive Care Units (ICU), identifying nursing interventions that correspond to Swanson's five theoretical processes (knowing, being with, doing for, enabling, and maintaining belief) and assessing their implications for clinical practice. METHOD: Scoping review conducted according to the methodological framework of Arksey and O'Malley (2005), enhanced by Levac et al.
