The Diagnostic Value of Routine Spirometry in Occupational Health Practice for Early Detection of Silicosis: A Retrospective Belgian Study Among Silica-Exposed Workers.

OBJECTIVE: Silicosis is a pneumoconiosis caused by respirable crystalline silica (RCS). As current surveillance methods have low sensitivity for early detection, we evaluated the value of prediagnostic occupational spirometry monitoring. METHODS: To investigate the possibility of detecting disease, we assessed 58 RCS-exposed cases by linking lung function abnormalities to CT readings. Univariate, stepwise logistic regression and ROC analysis were performed. RESULTS: Of 31 workers with RCS-related CT abnormalities, 25 were classified as silicosis. Fixed cutoff predicted values (FCO) for FEV 1

Speech-language therapy and occupational therapy for patients with mild cognitive impairment and dementia: a retrospective cohort study using German health claims data.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a complex, multifactorial syndrome characterised by cognitive decline and impaired daily functioning, representing a major risk factor for long-term care dependency. As the prevalence of dementia will increase due to demographic change, healthcare systems face growing challenges, including timely diagnosis, equitable access to care, and managing the rising demand for health services. Speech-language therapy (SLT) and occupational therapy (OT) can help maintain cognitive function and quality of life, particularly in the early stages of dementia or mild cognitive impairme

Acute joint pain in the emerging green collar workforce: Evidence from the linked National Health Interview Survey and Occupational Information Network (O*NET).

BACKGROUND: Green jobs are a rapidly emerging category of very heterogeneous occupations that typically involve engagement with new technologies and changing job demands predisposing them to physical stressors that may contribute to the development of joint pain. METHODS: We estimated and compared the prevalence of self-reported acute (past 30 days) joint pain between green and non-green collar workers using pooled 2004-2012 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data linked to the Occupational Information Network Database (O*NET). RESULTS: Green collar workers have a higher prevalence of a

Integral strategy to supportive care in breast cancer survivors through occupational therapy and a m-health system: design of a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Technological support using e-health mobile applications (m-health) is a promising strategy to improve the adherence to healthy lifestyles in breast cancer survivors (excess in energy intake or low physical activity are determinants of the risk of recurrence, second cancers and cancer mortality). Moreover, cancer rehabilitation programs supervised by health professionals are needed due to the inherent characteristics of these breast cancer patients. Our main objective is to compare the clinical efficacy of a m-health lifestyle intervention system alone versus an integral strategy t

Transforming public health?: a critical review of progress made against enteric diseases during the American-led occupation of Japan (1945-52).

Historical assessments of the Occupation's efforts to tackle enteric diseases (cholera, typhoid, paratyphoid and dysentery) have generally reflected a celebratory narrative of US-inspired public health reforms, strongly associated with the head of the Public Health and Welfare Section, Crawford F. Sams. Close inspection of the documentary record, however, reveals much greater continuity with pre-war Japanese public health practices than has hitherto been acknowledged. Indeed, there are strong grounds for disputing American claims of novelty and innovation in such areas as immunisation, particu
