The habenula (Hb) plays important roles in emotion-related behaviors. Besides receiving inputs from the limbic system and basal ganglia, Hb also gets inputs from multiple sensory modalities. Sensory responses of Hb neurons in zebrafish are asymmetrical: the left dorsal Hb and right dorsal Hb (dHb) preferentially respond to visual and olfactory stimuli, respectively, implying different functions of the left and right dHb. While visual responses of the left dHb (L-dHb) have been implicated in light-preference behavior, the significance of olfactory responses of the right dHb (R-dHb) remains unde

The sensory neurons that subserve olfaction, olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs), are regenerated throughout life, making the neuroepithelium in which they reside [the olfactory epithelium (OE)] an excellent model for studying how intrinsic and extrinsic factors regulate stem cell dynamics and neurogenesis during development and regeneration. Numerous studies indicate that transcription factors and signaling molecules together regulate generation of ORNs from stem and progenitor cells during development, and work on regenerative neurogenesis indicates that these same factors may operate at postn

INTRODUCTION: The interplay between gut microbiota and host physiological processes has been extensively studied in vertebrates, where it plays a crucial role in regulating appetite, emotion, immunity, and other physiological functions. However, whether a similar regulatory mechanism exists in insects remains unclear, especially regarding the long-distance regulation of olfactory function. This study focused on three Culex subspecies (Culex quinquefasciatus, Culex pipiens pallens, and Culex pipiens molestus) that are closely related but exhibit significant differences in olfaction-dependent ec

Neurodegenerative diseases are a horrendous burden for their victims, their families, and society as a whole. For half a century scientists have pursued the hypothesis that these diseases involve a chronic viral infection in the brain. However, efforts to consistently detect a specific virus in brains of patients with such diseases as Alzheimer's or multiple sclerosis have generally failed. Neuropathologists have become increasingly aware that most patients with neurodegenerative diseases demonstrate marked deterioration of the brain olfactory bulb in addition to brain targets that define the

PURPOSE: Transcanalicular diode laser dacryocystorhinostomy (TCL-DCR) is used much in recent years for the surgery of nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO). Although TCL-DCR is accepted to be minimally invasive, safe, and effective, there is no report focusing on postoperative changes in olfactory function after this procedure. Hence, the aim of this current study was to investigate the changes in olfactory function after TCL-DCR procedure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was carried out in 42 volunteers (16 men and 26 women) between the ages of 20 and 81 years. All participants received det

Within the central nervous system, the olfactory system represents one of the most exciting scenarios since it presents relevant examples of long-life sustained neurogenesis and continuous axonal outgrowth from the olfactory epithelium with the subsequent plasticity phenomena in the olfactory bulb. The olfactory nerve is composed of nonmyelinated axons with interesting ontogenetic interpretations. However, the centripetal projections from the olfactory bulb are myelinated axons which project to more caudal areas along the lateral olfactory tract. In consequence, demyelination has not been cons

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In congenital anosmia, the OB and OT can be aplastic or hypoplastic. In clinical routine, these are sometimes difficult to assess. We thus wanted to investigate morphologic differences of the OS in patients with IA since birth or early childhood in comparison with controls, to investigate whether there is a depth of OS that is predictive of IA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Within the context of a 2-center study, we investigated 36 patients with IA in comparison with 70 controls. MR imaging was performed with a standard quadrature head coil (1.5T; T1- and T2-weighted spin-ech

Rats with a bilateral lesion of the olfactory bulb are permanently anosmic. However, this lesion also produces nonspecific behavioral effects that recover over time. In this study olfactory bulb-lesioned animals are given a spatial orientation task--the Morris maze--which supposedly relies on visual and not olfactory cues. In exp. 1 this assumption was verified by subjecting animals with peripherally induced anosmia to the Morris maze (olfactory neurons in the nasal mucosae were destroyed by flushing the nose with ZnSO4). Anosmia did not affect the acquisition rate of the animals. In exp. 2 an

We have briefly reviewed the literature pertaining to the movement of tracer molecules and infectious organisms within the olfactory nerve. There is a body of evidence indicating that tracers placed in the CSF will quickly move via the olfactory nerve to the nasal mucosa and then to the cervical lymph nodes. Organic and inorganic tracer materials and organisms as diverse as viruses, a bacillus, and an amoeba, when placed in the nasal cavity, have been shown to move from the nasal mucosa via the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb and the CSF. We think that a portion of the data on tracer mov

BACKGROUND: The olfactory bulb (OB) is the central processing structure of olfactory information, but the effect of nasal septal deviation (NSD) on olfactory system morphology remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the morphometric and volumetric changes in the OB and olfactory tract (OT) associated with the direction and angle of NSD, and to investigate the relationship between these changes and septal morphometric parameters.
METHODS: This prospective autopsy study included 86 cases aged 18-80 years, classified by computed tomography (CT) as right NSD (n = 46) and left NSD (n = 40).

Olfactory or gustatory dysfunction has been described in patients with motor neuron disease. This disorder along with other degenerative diseases has been tentatively linked with the olfactory vector hypothesis according to which a toxic agent may enter the organism via the nasal mucosa. In our study we assessed 26 patients diagnosed as suffering from motor neuron disease at various stages and compared them with 26 matched controls using 'Sniffin' Sticks' for smell and taste strips for taste testing. The two groups did not differ with respect to either ability. The smell test correlated with a

Olfactory deficits are a common (often prodromal) symptom of neurodegenerative or psychiatric disorders. As such, olfaction could have great potential as an early biomarker of disease, for example using neuroimaging to investigate the breakdown of structural connectivity profile of the primary olfactory networks. We investigated the suitability for this purpose in two existing neuroimaging maps of olfactory networks. We found problems with both existing neuroimaging maps in terms of their structural connectivity to known secondary olfactory networks. Based on these findings, we were able to me

Olfactory groove schwannomas are extremely uncommon and less than 30 cases are reported in the literature. We report a 21-year-old developmentally-retarded boy who experienced severe headache and aggressive behaviour for 5 months. Imaging showed a cystic mass in the subfrontal region, which was removed by craniotomy. The lesion had a vascular supply from the anterior ethmoidal arteries and it was noted to be attached to the right olfactory nerve. It was removed completely and histology showed it to be a schwannoma. Olfactory groove schwannomas are rare lesions and should be differentiated from

Although the importance of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the regulation of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and reproduction has been highlighted in recent years, the neuroanatomical substrate within which these substances might interact has not been fully elucidated. Present work was undertaken with a view to define the anatomical-physiological correlates underlying the role exercised by NPY in the regulation of GnRH in the forebrain of the teleost Clarias batrachus. Application of double immunocytochemistry revealed close associations as well as colocalizations of the two peptides in the olfa

The involvement of the nervus terminalis or terminal nerve in the pheromonally induced testosterone surge in the male hamster was investigated. Blood was collected from male hamsters not exposed to odor (baseline), and then a week later from the same hamsters exposed to the odor of vaginal discharge from an estrous female. Terminal nerve lesions, forebrain lesions, or sham surgeries were performed, and blood was collected again with and without odor stimulation. Serum testosterone levels were assessed by radioimmunoassay. None of the surgical procedures interrupted the ability of the male hams

BACKGROUND: Olfactory deficits have a diverse etiology and can be detected with simple olfactory tests. Key olfactory pathways are located within the frontal and temporal lobes where they are vulnerable to damage due to head trauma. Orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) integrity is important for olfaction and aspects of behavioral regulation. We measured olfactory identification ability in a sample of impulsive violent offenders to determine its associations with history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and a range of neuropsychiatric indices, including proxies for cognitive ability, impulsivity and soci…

The terminal nerve is a ganglionated cranial nerve with peripheral processes that enter the nasal cavity and centrally directed processes that enter the forebrain. Members of all classes of gnathostomes have been found to possess a terminal nerve, some components of which demonstrate immunoreactivity to the peptides Phe-Met-Arg-Phe-NH2 (FMRFamide) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). To explore the possibility that lampreys possess a terminal nerve, we examined the distribution of these peptides in the silver lamprey, Ichthyomyzon unicuspis, by using antisera to FMRFamide and to four for

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, can have neurological effects, including cognitive symptoms like brain fog and memory problems. Research on the neurological effects of COVID-19 is ongoing, and factors such as inflammation, disrupted blood flow, and damage to blood vessels may contribute to cognitive symptoms. Notably, some authors and existing evidence suggest that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can enter the central nervous system through different routes, including the olfactory nerve and the bloodstream. COVID-19 infection has been associated with neurological symptoms such as altered consc

Olfactory groove meningiomas (OGM) are a skull base neoplasm that represents between 8 and 13% of all intracranial meningiomas. Approach selection focuses on achieving frontal lobe decompression, gross total resection and vision preservation. Recently, there has been a focus on olfaction and considering its preservation as a quality-of-life outcome measure. An electronic search of the databases Medline, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane library databases was performed and data extracted according 2020 Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statemen

Comparative neuroanatomists since Herrick [1914] have been aware of the paradox that the brain of amphibians, especially salamanders, is less complex than one would expect based on their phylogenetic position among the Tetrapoda. Many features of the brain are less differentiated in salamanders than in tetrapod outgroups, including chondrichthyans and bony fishes, and for some brain characters, the salamander brain is even more simple than that of the agnathans. Here, we perform a cladistic analysis on 23 characters of four sensory systems (visual, auditory, lateral line and olfactory) and the
