Sex differences in behavioral and neural characteristics can be caused by cultural influences but also by sex-based differences in neurophysiological and sensorimotor features. Since signal-response systems influence decision-making, cooperative and collaborative behaviors, the anatomical or physiological bases for any sex-based difference in sensory mechanisms are important to explore. Here, we use uniform scaling and nonparametric representations of the human cochlea, the main organ of hearing that imprints its adult-like morphology within the petrosal bone from birth. We observe a sex-diffe

The effects of chlorpromazine-treatment timing on the development of the placenta in pregnant rats were examined. Chlorpromazine was administered intraperitoneally at 100mg/kg on gestation day (GD) 11 (GD11-treated group), GD 13 (GD13-treated group) or GD 15 (GD15-treated group) into pregnant rats. All treated dams exhibited decreased body weight, prone position, hypothermia, loss or decrease of locomotor activity, etc. The fetal mortality rates were increased up to 42.9% in the GD11- and GD13-treated groups and up to 16.7% in the GD15-treated group. The embryo/fetal weight was on a declining

High-dose gavage exposure to ethylene glycol (EG) is teratogenic in rats, but not rabbits. To investigate the reason for this species difference, toxicokinetic and whole embryo culture (WEC) studies were conducted in gestation day 9 New Zealand White rabbits, and the data compared to very similar data previously generated in pregnant rats. In the toxicokinetic study, maximal levels of unchanged EG in rabbits were comparable to those reported for rats. However, maximal levels of EG's teratogenic metabolite, glycolic acid (GA), in rabbit maternal blood and embryo were only 46% and 10% of the res

Presence of placental tissues from more normal noncloned embryos could reduce the pregnancy failure of somatic cloning in cattle. In this study, inner cell mass (ICM) cells of in vitro-produced (IVP) embryos was replaced with those of nuclear transfer (NT) embryos to reconstruct bovine blastocysts with ICM and trophoblast cells from NT and IVP embryos, respectively. A total of 65 of these reconstructed embryos were nonsurgically transferred to 20 recipient beef females. Of those, two females were diagnosed pregnant by ultrasonography on day 30 of gestation. One pregnancy was lost at 60-90 days

The establishment of in vitro fertilization and culture systems for mammalian embryos has facilitated the application of embryo technologies in research, industry, and clinical settings. Furthermore, the advent of cloning by nuclear transfer has significantly enhanced the potential for genetic modification of livestock. Based on studies in cattle, sheep, and mice, it has become apparent that embryos produced using these systems can differ in morphology and developmental potential compared with embryos produced in vivo. Referred to as "large offspring syndrome," these abnormalities in the devel

A distillate of light alkylate naphtha (CAS number 64741-66-8; LAN distillate) was administered via inhalation, 6 h/d, 7 d/wk to 4 groups of Sprague-Dawley rats (10/sex/dose) at target concentrations of 0 (filtered air control), 5, 12.5, or 25 g/m3 with the highest dose exceeding 60% of the lower explosive limit of LAND. Exposure began 2 wk prior to mating and continued throughout gestation until postnatal d 4 for females or for 8 consecutive weeks for males. No apparent clinical signs indicative of systemic toxicity were observed in the F0 and F1 animals of either sex. Inhalation exposure to

Uterine didelphys is a rare congenital anomaly of the female reproductive organs, designated by the presence of the uterus as a pair of organs. This occurs as a result of the failure of the embryonic fusion of Müllerian ducts. Women with this abnormality have a paired uterus with two cervices and usually a double vagina. The chance of having a pregnancy in one of the pairs along with prolapse of the other is very low in a didelphic uterus. To the best of the author's knowledge, only one case of such an event has been reported so far. In this case report, we are reporting on a 28-year-old gravi

Protein assemblies, including aggregates and condensates, are closely linked to health and diseases. We demonstrate boxcar-enhanced Fluorescence-detected mid-Infrared photothermaL Microscopy (FILM), using two model species, Caenorhabditis elegans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, to quantitatively resolve these protein states in vivo by imaging β-sheet and α-helix secondary structures and analyzing their ratios. This method directly distinguishes polyglutamine (PolyQ) protein aggregates, α-synuclein protein condensates, and P-granule condensates implicated in neurodegenerative diseases and embryon

Pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors are often classified by distinct histologic and molecular features; however, some tumors remain unclassified, resulting in diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report a case of a previously healthy 3-year-old female who presented with right eyelid ptosis and headache. Imaging revealed a right middle cranial fossa mass. Following surgery and histopathologic and molecular analyses, the diagnosis was a malignant neoplasm with mixed neural and myoblastic differentiation, not elsewhere classified based on the current World Health Organization (WHO)

Alternative splicing (AS) is a crucial process that produces functionally distinct proteins from a single gene, depending on the developmental or physiological state of cells in multicellular organisms. It plays a significant role in cellular proliferation, survival, and differentiation, including embryonic development, spermatogenesis, and a broad spectrum of diseases. However, the precise involvement of AS in embryo implantation is still unclear. In this review, we summarize the potential roles of AS in regulating mesenchymal-epithelial transitions during embryo implantation, specifically in

The musculoskeletal (MSK) system begins to form in the third week of intrauterine development. Multiple genes are involved in the complex different processes to form the skeleton, muscles and joints. The embryonic period, from the third to the eighth week of development, is critical for normal development and therefore the time when most structural defects are induced. Many of these defects have a genetic origin, but environmental factors may also play a very important role. This review summarizes the embryology of the different components of the MSK system and their configuration as an organ-

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) of the larynx in adults is an extremely rare diagnosis with insidious onset and progression. Only six reports (including this one) have been documented in the literature. Clinical presentation is dependent on the site, size, subtype of ERMS and growth rate. Hoarseness is the usual first symptom, followed by stridor and dyspnoea, with dysphagia being late in onset. Accurate staging and risk stratification is necessary to avoid overtreating/undertreating patients and should be guided by local Head and Neck/Sarcoma Multidisciplinary Teams. Treatment has moved awa

Wnt canonical signaling pathway plays a diverse role in embryonic development and maintenance of organs and tissues in adults. It has been observed that Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway is involved in the pathogenesis of many carcinomas. Moreover, Wnt/β-catenin pathway has been revealed to be associated with angiogenesis. Wnt canonical pathway signaling has great potential as a therapeutic target. It has been disclosed that some hematological malignancies, such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia, mantle cell lymphoma, may occur partly due to the constitutive activation of Wnt canonical signaling p

RASopathies are disorders caused by germline mutations in genes that encode components of the RAS/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. These syndromes share features of developmental delay, facial dysmorphisms, and defects in various organs, as well as cancer predisposition. Somatic mutations of the same pathway are one of the primary causes of cancer. It is thought that germline cancer-causing mutations would be embryonic lethal, as a more severe phenotype was shown in Drosophila and zebrafish embryos with cancer MAP2K1 mutations than in those with RASopathy mutations. Here we rep

Benign ganglioneuroma contains mature autonomous ganglion cells, including satellite cells and long axonal processes, as well as Schwann cells, which come from neural crest-derived cells that form the adrenal medulla and sympathetic nervous system during embryonic development and is a rare benign tumor which occurs spontaneously and can also occur during radiotherapy or chemotherapy, accounting for 0.72% -1.6% of primary retroperitoneal tumors, commonly found in the posterior mediastinum and retroperitoneum, and affected patients usually have no symptoms due to of its non-functional feature, a

Urachus is an embryonic organ related to the bladder that degenerates after birth. Defective obliteration of the urachus leads to urachal malformations, the most common of which is a urachal cyst. A urachal cyst is often misdiagnosed due to its myriad presentations. Delay in diagnosis can lead to complications such as sepsis, fistula formation, and rupture of the cyst mimicking peritonitis. Hence, a high index of suspicion is required for the timely diagnosis and management of urachal cysts presenting in the emergency room. We report the case of a 32-year-old woman who presented with clinical

Organ formation during embryogenesis is a complex process that involves various local cell-cell interactions at the molecular and mechanical levels. Despite this complexity, organogenesis can be modelled in vitro. In this article, we focus on two recent examples in which embryonic stem cells can self-organise into three-dimensional structures - the optic cup and the pituitary epithelium; and one case of self-organising adult stem cells - the gut epithelium. We summarise how these approaches have revealed intrinsic programs that drive locally autonomous modes of organogenesis and homeostasis. W

The vertebrate eye consists of multiple tissues with distinct embryonic origins. To ensure formation of the eye as a functional organ, development of ocular tissues must be precisely coordinated. Besides intrinsic regulators, several extracellular pathways have been shown to participate in controlling critical steps during eye development. Many components of Wnt/Frizzled signaling pathways are expressed in developing ocular tissues, and substantial progress has been made in the past few years in understanding their function during vertebrate eye development. Here, I summarize recent work using
