BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable bone disease characterized by bone brittleness and various degrees of growth disorder. Cyclic pamidronate therapy is reportedly useful to prevent bone fracture in OI and in infants with OI, but, it remains unclear how infants with OI grow during bisphosphonate therapy.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare inherited disorder characterized by disruption of normal collagen formation, brittle bones, and low bone density, predisposing to multiple bone fractures and wide-spectrum symptomatology. Extradural and subdural hematomas and spinal cord injuries have been reported but mainly in children with OI. We cared for a 60-year old woman with OI and bilateral nontraumatic subdural hematomas possibly caused by spontaneous intracranial hypotension.

OBJECTIVE: This article presents a case of osteogenesis imperfecta and reviews the clinical and radiographic features of this condition.
CLINICAL FEATURES: A 27-year-old woman presented with pain in her left hand after a fall while dancing. Plain films revealed multiple fractures in the digits of her left hand.
INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: The patient was referred to an orthopedic specialist for treatment.
CONCLUSION: Osteogenesis imperfecta is a heritable disorder of bone, which predisposes patients to fractures after trivial trauma, as was demonstrated in this case.

Distraction osteogenesis is used to treat atrophic nonunion and focal osteomyelitis. It enhances blood vessel formation in the distracted callus and in the surrounding soft tissues. Damage to the dentition or tooth follicle is often cited as a potential complication of Distraction Osteogenesis (DO). The authors describe a case of a dentigerous cyst that developed following DO of the mandible. The possible histogenic mechanisms and the management are outlined. Understanding the causes of dentigerous cysts as well as the anatomy of the neonatal mandible may help avoid such a complication in the future.

A young boy presented with severe muscle weakness of his legs at the age of 2 years. Muscle morphology and computer tomography imaging findings were compatible with a metabolic myopathy. Additional investigation showed an osteopenic skeleton and signs of healing fractures. A skin biopsy showed an abnormal electrophoresis pattern of collagen, consistent with a variant of osteogenesis imperfecta. The patient improved with intravenous treatment with pamidronate.

Nine patients with severely atrophic edentulous mandibles were treated by distraction osteogenesis with subperiosteal distractors for vertical augmentation of the anterior alveolar bone before insertion of implants. All the patients had severe complications and we conclude that the use of subperiosteal devices for vertical augmentation of edentulous mandibles is hazardous and offers no advantage over other surgical methods.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of orally administered alendronate in children with osteogenesis imperfecta.

The authors analyzed the results and complications of metatarsal lengthening in short first metatarsals by distraction osteogenesis. There were 13 first metatarsal lengthenings in eight patients.
