Complications of subclavian vein catheterization are common and include pneumothorax, hemothorax, and sepsis. Osteomyelitis is a rare complication. The present report describes a patient with osteomyelitis of both clavicles due to subclavian vein venipuncture, in whom fever and chills were absent and the sole clinical finding was local pain and tenderness in the involved area.

Cat bite wounds of the hand are frequently associated with soft tissue infection of the injured part. Osteomyelitis is a less common complication but the sharp slender fangs of the cat may predispose to this complication by causing deposition of organisms into underlying bone. The following is a report of a severe and rapidly destructive osteomyelitis of the wrist following a cat bite.

Salmonella vertebral osteomyelitis of the lumbar spine is encountered as a complication of Salmonella arteritis. Salmonella organisms, especially those of the choleraesuis and typhimurium species, invade the lamina intima of a diseased or atherosclerotic abdominal aorta, penetrate its wall, and cause the formation of a mycotic aneurysm. A model of posttraumatic osteomyelitis was developed in 120 Duncan-Hartley guinea-pigs. For this purpose the right femura of all animals were fractured surgically. Although osteomyelitis of the mandibular condyle secondary to dental extraction is scarcely mentioned in the medical and dental literature, we have seen three cases within a two-year period. The first two patients were examined for an eroded condyle three months and 18 months following the extractions. The third patient, who was treated one month after extraction for acute osteomyelitis of the condyle, has done well. All three patients required operations and administration of long-term antibiotics.

A retrospective study of 40 children with osteomyelitis revealed that the patients presented in hospital late. Therefore chronic osteomyelitis is prevalent in Nigerian children. Sickle cell anaemia is commonly associated with osteomyelitis. Staphylococcus aureus is the comonest organism but salmonella is associated with sicklers.

Twenty-five patients suffering from chronic haematogenous osteomyelitis of the os calcis were studied. The disease often presents in a subacute or chronic form, and the pathological process is well established in the majority of the cases by the time treatment is begun.
