BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to evaluate an association between the C49620T ABCC8 gene polymorphism and anthropometric, biochemical parameters, pancreatic β-cell function and insulin sensitivity among autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) patients.
METHODS: Forty-nine ADPKD patients (M/F: 19/30) and fifty healthy controls (M/F: 22/28) aged above 18 years, with normal kidney function and no diagnosis of diabetes, were enrolled into the study. The ABCC8 (SUR1) C49620T (IVS15-3C/T, rs1799854) genotypes were determined using a PCR-RFLP technique.

A 13-year-old boy is described who developed severe adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), biochemical pancreatitis and skin vasculitis after an acute respiratory infection due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The boy was mechanically ventilated for 17 days, but could be discharged in good clinical condition after 36 days of hospitalization. However, major disturbances of the lung function tests persisted, suggesting interstitial fibrosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of ARDS after M. pneumoniae infection in childhood.

Nonmalignant incidental findings in patients undergoing F-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) PET/CT for oncological indication are common. Here, we present such a case of a 40-year-old woman, treated case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the left parotid gland, who subsequently presented with progressive back pain and deranged liver function tests. F-FDG PET/CT showed no definite malignancy but incidental finding of moderately severe acute pancreatitis, which was the cause of back pain.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common serious genetic condition in the White population groups. Thirty-three White patients (mean age 20 years, range 14-32 years) seen at an adult CF clinic at the Johannesburg Hospital between January 1980 and January 1983 are reviewed.
