BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) - also known as hypernephroma or grawitz tumor - accounts for 3% of the adulthood malignancies. Approximately 30-40% of the patients have metastasis at the time of the diagnosis and most common sites for metastasis are lung, regional lymph nodes, bone and liver. A total of 8-14% of the patients with RCC has head and neck metastasis. However, metastasis to major salivary glands is rarely seen. In this paper, we aimed to report a RCC case with metastasis to parotid and submandibular glands that has the same sonographic and sonoelastographic findings with th

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node biopsy have been used successfully to stage regional lymphatics for trunk and extremity melanomas. However, the accuracy and applicability of these techniques in the head and neck have not been determined conclusively.
OBJECTIVE: To report the results of a prospective trial of intraoperative lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node identification in patients with head and neck cutaneous melanoma.
METHODS: Using technetium Tc 99m--labeled sulfur colloid and isosulfan blue, intraoperative lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma (MASC) of the salivary gland is a malignant tumor which bears morphologic, immunohistochemical and molecular features similar to those of mammary secretory carcinoma. The tumor is considered as a low-grade malignancy perhaps slightly more aggressive than acinic cell carcinoma. High-grade transformation with recurrences, regional nodal involvement, metastases, and cancer-related death has been reported in a few cases. We report an unusual case of large MASC of the parotid gland in a young patient without regional lymph node involvement. To the best of our kn

Conventional imaging techniques, while essential, occasionally fall short in identifying elusive metastatic lesions, leading to delayed diagnoses and compromised patient outcomes. Gallium-68 fibroblast activating protein inhibitor (68Ga-FAPI) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), leveraging the distinct affinity of fibroblast activation protein for cancer-associated fibroblasts, emerges as a promising solution to bridge this diagnostic gap. Parotid gland adenocarcinoma is a relatively rare malignancy with metastasis typically occurring in regional lymph nodes and distant s

We report two patients with Warthin's tumor who were also infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Case 1 was a 75-year-old woman with Warthin's tumor and multiple small epithelioid granulomas with caseous necrosis involving the submandibular gland. This patient died of tuberculous meningitis 4 months after biopsy. Case 2 was a 78-year-old man with a 10-year history of a parotid mass which had enlarged rapidly over 2 months. Surgical excision revealed Warthin's tumor and epithelioid granulomas involving the left parotid gland. DNA extracted from paraffin sections was amplified by nested polym

Anesthesia mumps, also known as acute postoperative sialadenitis, is a rare complication that can occur following general or regional anesthesia. The prevalence of this condition ranges from 0.16% to 0.2%. This case report presents a patient with recurrent bilateral parotid swelling after cesarean section (CS) under spinal anesthesia and its management. A 42-year-old G5P4 woman with gestational diabetes mellitus and antiphospholipid syndrome presented for elective cesarean delivery at 39 weeks and two days of gestation under spinal anesthesia. The patient developed bilateral facial swelling af

MALT (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue) lymphomas are low-grade extra-nodal B-cell lymphomas that may involve various sites in the head and neck including the thyroid, salivary, and lacrimal glands. Development of MALT lymphoma in the head and neck is often associated with auto-immune diseases such as Sjögren syndrome or Hashimoto thyroiditis. Here, we report a case of a MALT lymphoma of the left buucal mucosa that likely arose in the parotid gland. The patient was successfully treated with surgical excision with chemotherapy and remained disease-free at the 10-year follow-up. Since it was ra

The case of a 39-year-old man with slowly growing mass in the superior part of left parotid region is described. Patient presented neurological symptoms including hypomobility of lower left eyelid and inability of complete closure of left side eyelids resulting in conjunctivitis and hyperlacrimation. Routine physical examination supported by image and laboratory tests was performed. Pathomorphological results of hematoxylin and eosin staining as well immunohistochemical examination in view of clinical presentation pointed to diagnosis of high grade salivary duct carcinoma. Rare incidence, hist…

Salivary gland tumors are a relatively rare and morphologically diverse group of lesions. Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign tumor of the salivary gland that consists of a combination of epithelial and mesenchymal elements. The tumor most commonly arises from the parotid (60-70%) or submandibular glands. It develops less frequently in a minor salivary gland, presenting as an intraoral mass depend on the soft palate. We describe a case of benign pleomorphic adenoma of soft palate in a 45 year old female with computed tomography and histopathological findings. This patient presented in ENT departme

Warthin's tumours are the second most common benign tumours of the parotid gland. The authors report the case of a 40-year-old man of Afro-Caribbean decent who presented with a painless mass at the angle of the right mandible. It was an incidental finding while shaving and was not associated with any symptoms. Arrangements were made for him to undergo an ear, nose and throat (ENT) evaluation. Axial contrast-enhanced CT of head and neck region revealed a well-defined cystic lesion. Fine-needle aspiration cytology was inconclusive. Right superficial partial parotidectomy was performed to remove

A 4-year-old male child presented to our outpatient department with large swelling in the parotid region. Routine investigations were all within normal limits, and evaluation of complete blood count was normal except for anaemia. Excisional biopsy as a therapeutic diagnosis was done. Microscopic examination showed monomorphic population of discohesive, hyperchromatic small round cells having high N : C ratio, coarse chromatin, conspicuous nucleoli, and sometimes angulated nuclei lying in sheets. Immunohistochemistry was done to rule out possible differential diagnosis. Fine needle aspiration f…

Kimura's disease (KD) is a rare, chronic inflammatory condition of unknown origin that is more commonly seen in Asia. Lymphadenopathy in head and neck region and subcutaneous swelling are accompanied with increased serum IgE levels. In some cases renal involvement is seen. A 46-year-old male patient was operated on for a painless mass in the superficial lobe of the right parotid gland. Histopathologic examination of the specimen yielded the diagnosis of KD. Kimura's disease, even though rarely encountered, must be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of salivary gland tumors, and KD pati

Visualization of subcondylar fractures is limited, and rigid fixation technically difficult, employing standard open surgical techniques--especially when the condyle is displaced out of the glenoid fossa. The majority of condylar neck fractures are treated by closed reduction with maxillomandibular fixation, to obviate the potential for permanent injury to the facial nerve. The technique described employs an anterior parotid, two-layer, sub-SMAS (superficial musculo-aponeurotic system) approach via a rhytidectomy incision that reliably identifies and preserves the neural elements and provides

Facial soft tissue injuries encompass a broad spectrum of presentations and often present significant challenges to the craniofacial surgeon. A thorough and systematic approach to these patients is critical to ensure that the patient is stabilized, other injuries identified, and the full extent of the injuries are assessed. Initial management focuses on wound cleaning with irrigation, hemostasis, and debridement of nonviable tissue. Definitive management is dependent on the region of the face involved with special considerations for critical structures such as the globe, lacrimal apparatus, fa

Facial nerve schwannomas (FNS) are encapsulated benign tumors arising from Schwann cells of seventh cranial nerve. Most of the facial nerve schwannomas are localized in intratemporal region; only 9% of cases involve a portion of the extratemporal segment. Preoperative diagnosis is often unclear; diagnosis is often made intraoperatively. Management of intraparotid FNS is troublesome because of the facial nerve paralysis. In this report we presented a case of intraparotid schwannoma in a 55-year-old male patient complaining of a painless mass without peripheral facial nerve palsy in left parotid

A rare case of fracture of the coronoid process, sphenoid bone, zygoma, and zygomatic arch caused by a firearm is described. A 25-year-old man was hit in the face with a bullet, resulting in restricted mouth opening, difficulty chewing, and pain when opening the mouth. The clinical examination revealed a perforating wound in the right parotid region. A computed tomographic scan revealed a comminuted fracture of the left coronoid process with the bullet stopping in the intact left coronoid process. Treatment was bilateral coronoidectomy associated with speech therapy and was successful. Details…

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas are rare, low-grade, malignant salivary gland tumors. They are mostly seen in the parotid gland. The submandibular gland is a rare localization. A 54-year-old woman presented with a painless lump on the left side of the neck. Examination showed a mass with smooth surface in the left submandibular region. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the mass was reported as malignant epithelial tumor metastasis. Computed tomography of the neck showed left submandibular gland hypertrophy. Left submandibular gland excision with functional neck dissection was performed. T

Intramandibular salivary inclusions and ectopia concern the main salivary glands. The most common takes the form of a regular well-defined lacunar appearance situated at the mandibular angle or molar region. This asymptomatic inclusions is in fact only the imprint of a lobule of the sub-mandibular gland on the mandible. More rarely, the parotid gland and sublingual gland may also be responsible for a lacunar radiological appearance in the mandible. By contrast, a few ectopic glandular lobules of the sublingual may be completely induced at the site of the mandibular symphsis. Salivary inclusion

INTRODUCTION: Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a malignant soft-tissue sarcoma primarily affecting the lower extremities of young adults. Synovial sarcoma occurring in the head and neck region is rare.
OBSERVATION: We report a case of a 32-year-old female with a biphasic synovial sarcoma, showing extensive calcification, arising in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). For effective diagnosis and treatment of synovial sarcomas in the TMJ, we reviewed relevant cases reported in the English literature and further discussed the clinicopathologic features, differential diagnosis, treatment strategies and pr

INTRODUCTION: The objective of the study was to determine the preferential territories of drainage of skin areas of the face and neck. This knowledge can guide the strategies of diagnostic (search for primary tumor skin to cervical lymphadenopathy) and treatment (determination of the extent of neck dissection to achieve in case of skin tumor).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of the surgical procedures of sentinel node research between January 2003 and April 2011. The lymphoscintigraphic and intraoperative localization of the initial tumor site and sentinel lymph node were
