PURPOSE: This retrospective observational cohort analysis aims to address diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in managing osteochondral fractures (OCFs) resulting from acute patella dislocation and ankle sprains in children.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Distortions and contusions of the knee are common. Fairly often they will result in hemarthrosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the findings in patients with acute traumatic hemarthrosis of the knee and based on these findings estimate the necessity of acute arthroscopic examination.

Results and complications are reviewed in 18 femoral and seven tibial lengthenings performed using Wagner's technique. Lengthening achieved averaged 5.7 cm for the femoral and 5.6 cm for the tibial patients. Shortening was congenital in origin in 12 patients, and a soft tissue excision is recommended for these individuals. Two nonunions developed and two stress fractures occurred after plate removal. BACKGROUND: Chondral or osteochondral avulsions of the lateral distal femur edge after luxation of the patella are well known. Less common are impression fractures of the retropatellar joint or the lateral trochlea. Furthermore, on standard knee X-rays these injuries may not be seen and thus not properly be treated. BACKGROUND: CT scanning of ancient human remains has the potential to provide insights into health and diseases. While Egyptian mummies have undergone CT scans in prior studies, a systematic survey of the orthopedic conditions afflicting a group of these ancient individuals has never been carried out.
METHODS: We performed whole body CT scanning on 52 ancient Egyptian mummies using technique comparable to that of medical imaging. All of the large joints and the spine were systematically examined and osteoarthritic (OA) changes were scored 0-4 using Kellgren and Lawrence classification.
