Prenatal diagnosis and fetal pathology of partial trisomy 20P-monosomy 4P resulting from paternal translocation.

Amniocentesis was performed in view of a paternal balanced chromosomal rearrangement t(4;20)(p16;p12), inv(18)(p11q11). The pregnancy was complicated by severe oligohydramnios. The fetal karyotype was unbalanced: 46XX, der(4), t(4;20)(p16;p12), inv(18) (p11q11)pat., thus resulting in partial trisomy 20p and monosomy 4p. In addition, the amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) became increasingly elevated with gestational age. The pregnancy was terminated at 25 weeks. The fetus presented with typical facial dysmorphic features, unilateral cleft lip and palate, severe renal hypoplasia, consistent

Duplication-deficiency of chromosome 18, resulting from recombination of a paternal pericentric invesion, with a note for genetic counselling.

A fifth case of rec(18) resulting from recombination of a paternal pericentric inversion is described. The propositus' complement includes a chromosome 18 with partial deletion of the long arm, and partial duplication of the short. The recombination risk is evaluated at 5%. The eventuality of deleterious effects of pericentric inversions is discussed.

Additional pedigree supporting the frequent origin of XXYY from consecutive meiotic non-disjunction in paternal gametogenesis.

A 48,XXYY Sardinian patient, born to a 46,XX mother heterozygous for the Gd Mediterranean mutant, and to a 46,XY father hemizygous for the same mutant, was found to have a mosaic distribution of G6PD(+) and G6PD(-) peripheral red blood cells. The most likely interpretation of this finding is that the propositus is an additional example of an XXYY zygote derived from a consecutive meiotic non-disjunction during paternal gametogenesis.

Partial duplication of the long arm of chromosome 5: a case due to balanced paternal translocation and review of the literature.

A partial duplication of the distal segment of the long arm of chromosome 5 (q31 leads to qter) was observed in an infant with congenital malformations and dysmorphic features. The phenotypically normal father had a balanced translocation between the long arm of chromosome 5 and the short arm of chromosome 9: 46,XY,t(5;9)(q31;p24). The clinical and cytogenetic data obtained from six patients with partial duplications of two different long arm segments of chromosome 5 suggest that partial duplication of the distal long arm of chromosome 5 is associated with microcephaly, hypertelorism, epicanth

Paternal exposure to low-dose N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) induces intergenerational alterations in the prostatic microenvironment of rats.

NDMA is a nitrosamine recognized as an environmental contaminant of water and food, unintentionally formed during industrial processes and water treatment. Due to its mobility in aquatic environments, persistence, and carcinogenic potential, NDMA has emerged as a toxicological and public health concern. This study evaluated the effects of low-dose exposure (7.2 ng/kg/day) on the prostate of male Wistar rats across two generations within the Paternal Origins of Health and Disease (POHaD) framework. F0 males were exposed via gavage from postnatal day (PND) 60 to 104. In F1, offspring were evalua

Maternal And Paternal Differences in Parental Stress and Children's Autistic Features Among Parents of Preschool Autistic Children.

Parents of autistic children experience varying levels of stress, with only few studies examining gender-specific differences and their determinants. This study examined the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with stress among mothers and fathers of preschool-aged autistic children in Australia. Data were analysed from 516 parents of preschool-aged autistic children enrolled in six Autism Specific Early Learning and Care Centres. Multilevel regression models assessed associations between maternal and paternal stress and sociodemographic factors, parental quality of life, and chil

Associations Between Paternal Pre-Conceptional Body Mass Index and Lifestyle Factors and Offspring Weight Development.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that pre-conceptional paternal factors, including BMI and diet, may influence offspring development. OBJECTIVES: We examined the associations between paternal BMI, dietary protein intake, glycemic index (GI), smoking and alcohol consumption and offspring development during the first 5 years of life. METHODS: This secondary analysis of an RCT included 162 father-child pairs from pregnancies among women with pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity. Paternal characteristics were reported at gestational week 15, reflecting the preceding 3 months. Offspring anthropometry

Paternal physical inactivity alters offspring sex ratio and is associated with heritable impairments in reproductive success in rats.

Paternal lifestyle factors are increasingly recognized as determinants of offspring health, yet the effects of physical inactivity on reproduction remain unclear. Here, we demonstrated that paternal physical inactivity caused a bias in offspring sex ratio and reduced fertility across generations in rats. Male rats subjected to eight weeks of restricted activity produced offspring with a female-biased sex ratio (female : male = 39 : 16; p = 0.011; odds ratio = 2.84) compared with controls (24 : 28). Sperm motility was markedly reduced in inactive fathers (p < 0.001 versus control) but was fully

Paternal Broader Autism Phenotype and Adolescent Avoidant Attachment as Independent Predictors of Negative Symptoms in Early Psychosis.

INTRODUCTION: Familial neurodevelopmental traits and early relational experiences are increasingly recognized as contributors to heterogeneity in psychosis outcomes. However, little is known about how parental broader autism phenotype (BAP) and adolescent attachment jointly relate to symptom severity and treatment adherence in early-onset psychosis. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 42 adolescents (aged 12-17 years; 88.1% schizophrenia, 11.9% schizoaffective disorder) and their biological parents. Parental BAP was assessed using the Autism Spectrum Quotient-Revised (AQ-R), adolesce

Paternal lead exposure induces transgenerational oxidative stress and down-regulation of antioxidant genes in Drosophila melanogaster.

Lead (Pb) is one of the most prevalent environmental toxicants and is of great concern due to its adverse effects. Despite lead's oxidative properties, studies on the transgenerational effects of paternal Pb exposure remain inadequate. This study aimed to evaluate these effects on oxidative stress and the expression of specific genes using the D. melanogaster model. Male fruit flies were fed a normal diet supplemented with lead acetate as the Pb source for 20 consecutive days. The Pb-exposed males were mated with unexposed females, producing F1 offspring. F1 flies were fed a normal diet, and t

Perceived Paternal Acceptance-Rejection, Self-Perception, and Peer Victimization in Preadolescents with and Without Special Educational Needs.

Peer victimization during preadolescence constitutes a significant public mental health concern, particularly for children with special educational needs (SEN). Family relational factors, and especially paternal acceptance-rejection, may influence children's psychosocial adjustment and vulnerability to victimization. The present study examined the associations between perceived paternal acceptance-rejection, multidimensional self-perception, and peer victimization among preadolescents with and without SEN. A total of 660 students attending the final grades of Greek primary schools (553 without

Paternal age and offspring bone health and body composition at 20 years: Findings from the Raine study.

AIMS: There is growing evidence supporting paternal contributions to child health. Previous findings from the Vitamin D In Pregnancy study suggest that advanced paternal age is associated with a range of poorer bone measures for offspring at age 11 years. Whether these associations are evident when peak bone mass is attained remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate associations between paternal age and offspring bone health and body composition at age 20 years. METHODS: Data from the Raine study, a multigenerational cohort, were used. Among 1183 offspring with total body DXA data (Nor

Advanced paternal age is associated with reduced reproductive success and offspring racing performance in Australian Thoroughbred racehorses.

Reproductive ageing influences fertility and offspring fitness across mammals. In humans and model organisms, paternal age has been associated with changes in sperm quality and genomic integrity, including oxidative stress, DNA damage, and epigenetic alterations; however, these mechanisms have not been directly examined in large equine populations. Thoroughbred racehorses provide a system to investigate paternal age effects at scale using detailed breeding records. In this retrospective observational study, with data from 35 retired stallions and 33,546 progeny, we assessed associations betwee

Paternal glufosinate exposure alters early embryonic inflammatory signals and offspring neurobehavior in IVF-derived mice.

PURPOSE: Glufosinate (GLA) is a widely used herbicide, but developmental risks from paternal preconception exposure are unclear. We tested whether paternal GLA exposure affects offspring neurobehavior via fertilization-stage transmission using IVF. RESULTS: Male mice received GLA (0.2 mg/kg·day) for 10 weeks, and sperm were used for IVF with unexposed oocytes. Female offspring at 5 weeks showed reduced social novelty preference and slower Morris water maze navigation, with no probe difference. In brain, glial markers increased and GAD1 altered regionally. In preimplantation embryos, CCL3 and

Paternal lineage effects of prenatal ethanol exposure: Offspring neuroanatomy and behavior in a multigenerational mouse model of FASD.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) encompass a range of phenotypes in offspring exposed to ethanol via maternal consumption during pregnancy. In a series of studies, our laboratory identified deleterious effects of prenatal ethanol exposure (PrEE) in our FASD mouse model. The first filial generation (F1) of PrEE offspring exhibited abnormal neocortical gene expression, ectopic intraneocortical connectivity, altered neuroanatomy, and disrupted behavior. Our results suggest that PrEE can induce transgenerational transmission of the abnormal phenotypes, potentially via epigenetic

Risk factors for paternal perinatal depression in Chinese advanced maternal age couples: A regression mixture model.

BACKGROUND: Paternal perinatal depression (PPD) is closely associated with maternal mental health challenges, marital strain, and adverse child developmental outcomes. Despite its significant impact, PPD remains under-recognized in family-centered clinical practice. Concurrently, against the backdrop of rising rates of delayed marriage and China's Maternity Incentive Policy, the proportion of women giving birth at an advanced maternal age is increasing. Nevertheless, research specifically examining PPD among spouses of older mothers remains critically scarce, both in China and globally. AIM:

Culturally Embedded, Gendered, and Iterative Grief Among Adult Sons Following Paternal Loss: A Qualitative Study.

The death of a father is a major transition for adult sons, particularly in cultures emphasizing filial duty and masculine norms. This qualitative study explored how 24 bereaved sons in Chinese society experienced paternal loss using in-depth interviews and reflexive thematic analysis. Findings revealed a non-linear, iterative grieving process: sons assumed family responsibilities, maintained relational bonds, managed paradoxical emotions, reflected on father-son relationships, and engaged in recursive coping. Grief was culturally mediated, relational, and identity-transforming, highlighting t

Daily emotion in fathers and mothers: Little evidence for greater paternal well-being during infant care.

Parents' daily experience of childcare has garnered considerable attention following Kahneman et al.'s (2004) finding that childcare ranked among the least enjoyable daily activities. Subsequent studies have generally found that fathers report more positive valence during childcare compared to mothers. Here, we used experience sampling to examine daily experiences of first-time parents in Denmark between 2022 and 2024, where parental leave policies aim to promote involvement of fathers in infant care. Parents responded to 7 days of prompts during maternity and paternity leave, assessing valenc…
