IMPORTANCE: Physical biomarkers for stratifying patients with lung cancer into subtypes suggestive of outcomes are underexplored.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical utility of respiratory sarcopenia for optimizing postoperative risk stratification in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study reviewed consecutive patients undergoing lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection for NSCLC at 2 institutions in Tokyo, Japan, between 2009 and 2018. Eligible patients underwent electronic computed tomography image anal

1. Wooden breast (WB) is a common muscle abnormality in the pectoralis major (PM) muscle of broilers that results in significant economic losses for the poultry industry, although its incidence varies in different broiler lines. However, there are few reports on the genes and pathways involved in WB using RNA-seq or microarray data across multiple lines.2. The current study obtained three datasets (GSE127806, GSE144000 and GSE79276) from different broiler lines in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was then performed using GSE127806

Increased fat content and inflammation are observed in woody breast (WB) muscles, suggesting dysregulation of fatty acids and inflammation in WB conditions. This study evaluated the gene expression related to fatty acid metabolism and inflammation responses in WB muscle. In total, 112 Ross × Ross 708 broiler chickens were raised following the commercial husbandry recommendations in a floor-pen chicken house. On day 41, the WB condition of each bird was assessed through palpation, and the birds were then categorized into normal and WB phenotypes. Next, 10 birds were euthanatized, five of which

This manuscript, a Letter to the Editor, is in response to the recently published research article that compared the effectiveness of pectoral nerve (PECS) block I versus PECS block II in gynecomastia surgeries. A few important concepts that were misconceived by the authors of the original article are discussed here.Level of Evidence V This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. CASE: A 74-year-old male patient presenting with chronic radiating shoulder pain, paresthesias, and weakness had previously undergone reverse shoulder arthroplasty and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion for an irreparable cuff tear and cervical radiculopathy, respectively. After being diagnosed with neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome and undergoing physiotherapy, the patient's recalcitrant condition was surgically managed with arthroscopic pectoralis minor tenotomy, suprascapular nerve release, and brachial plexus neurolysis.
CONCLUSION: This ultimately led to complete pain relief and i

Pectoralis major tendon injuries are an uncommon injury. They can be treated with primary repair, however, when the tendon becomes retracted it necessitates tendon reconstruction. We performed a systematic review to evaluate patient characteristics, surgical techniques, and outcomes associated with pectoralis major reconstruction. A review was performed for studies published between 1990 and 2019. Peer-reviewed studies with a minimum 1-year follow-up were included. Return to activity, range of motion, complications, and functional outcome scores were primary outcomes. Fourteen primary studies

INTRODUCTION: The proximal insertion beyond coracoid process of pectoralis minor is considered as hidden culprit of rotator cuff disorders. The ectopic insertion is also associated with thoracic outlet syndrome. The current review was conducted to provide a comprehensive evidence-based assessment of the anatomical characteristics of ectopic insertion of pectoralis minor.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A through systematic search was conducted on the major electronic database, PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar and Journals of Anatomy, orthopedics, plastic surgery, sports medicine. The primary outcome was

Occurrence of mortality, wooden breast, and pulmonary disease in broiler chickens during the last 16 days of production in a teaching flock of 4000 commercial broilers was determined. A new syndrome was identified, in which broilers fell over for an unknown reason and were unable to right themselves (dorsal recumbency). Birds affected by dorsal recumbency were alert and responsive and showed no clinical signs except for occasional mild to moderate dyspnea. When turned over, they resumed normal behavior. Mortality (14 culls; 49 dead) during the last 16 days of production accounted for 1.6% of t

The pedicled pectoralis major flap was the original workhorse flap for head and neck reconstruction. Over time, it became the secondary choice for oropharyngeal reconstruction with the implementation of free-soft tissue transfers. Nowadays, a polymorbid patient is primarily indicated for pedicled pectoralis major flap reconstruction, other indications include combinations of pedicled pectoralis major flap with free microvascular flap, salvage reconstruction due to complications, salvage reconstruction due to free flap failure and salvage reconstruction due to recurrent or extended primary dise

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Total or subtotal glossectomy is considered a highly morbid procedure. However, in some institutions and in selected cases of unsuccessful chemoradiation regimens, it is performed with acceptable oncological and functional outcomes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Chemoradiation for advanced oral and oropharyngeal cancers is also highly morbid and some authors reported reasonable functional results after major glossectomies. Also, there is a lack of prospective trials comparing the long-term outcome between chemoradiation and major glossectomies.
SUMMARY: Total and/or subtotal glossectom

OBJECTIVES: Mastectomy is still one of the standard alternative procedures for the management of female breast cancer. Axillary node dissection is also performed to establish the accurate staging. After operation, the axilla must be drained because of lymphatic leakage. Whether the raw surface at the pectoral area should be drained or not is an interesting controversial point. The authors conducted a randomized controlled trial to compare outcomes after modified radical mastectomy (MRM) with and without drainage at the pectoral area.
METHODS: Sixty patients who agreed to be treated with MRM a

The patient was a 57-year-old male with lung adenocarcinoma arising in right upper lobe. Because the tumor invaded to the trunchus intermedius and B6, right upper lobe, middle lobe and S6 was resected with bronchial plasty which was performed between the main bronchus and basal bronchus. Because the bronchial fistula appeared after 12 days of operation, completion pneumonectomy was performed, and the stump of the main bronchus was covered with intercostal muscle. Although fistula of the bronchial stump did not appear, open drainage thoracotomy was performed because of deterioration of empyema

Cancer-related fatigue is the most common and persistent symptom in breast cancer, with fatigue reported up to 10 years post-diagnosis. Unlike many cancers, fatigue in breast cancer often arises during early-stage disease in the absence of cachexia. While many factors contribute to fatigue, the direct contribution of cancer-associated skeletal muscle pathology remains poorly understood. Here we analyzed pectoralis major muscle biopsies from individuals with non-metastatic breast cancer and non-cancer controls using single-fiber morphometry and spatial transcriptomics. We identified fiber-type-

Vascularized muscle flaps for treatment of mediastinitis and sternal wound dehiscence have become standard treatment practice, but triple-muscle flap reconstruction is reserved for the more complex wounds. The incisional approach for reoperation in such patients is controversial. We report an extremely ill infant, born at 38 weeks gestational age, who underwent an arterial switch procedure for transposition of the great arteries at 12 days of age. Sternal wound infection, dehiscence, mediastinitis, and extensive wound necrosis complicated the postoperative course. The cultured organism Enterob

Background People with chronic heart failure (CHF) experience severe skeletal muscle dysfunction, characterized by mitochondrial abnormalities, which exacerbates the primary symptom of exercise intolerance. However, the molecular triggers and characteristics underlying mitochondrial abnormalities caused by CHF remain poorly understood. Methods and Results We recruited 28 patients with CHF caused by reduced ejection fraction and 9 controls. We simultaneously biopsied skeletal muscle from the pectoralis major in the upper limb and from the vastus lateralis in the lower limb. We phenotyped mitoch

The brachial plexus consists of a network of nerves that innervates the upper limbs and its musculature. We report a rare formation of the lateral cord of the brachial plexus observed during the dissection of a 47-year-old male cadaver at the Department of Anatomy, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, New Delhi, India, in 2016. The lateral cord was exceptionally long with twin lateral pectoral nerves and twin lateral roots of the median nerve. The proximal lateral root of the median nerve was thin in comparison to the medial root of the median nerve. The distal lateral root of the median nerve wa
