Clinically-integrated breastfeeding peer counseling contributes to more equitable hospital-based lactation care.

OBJECTIVE: To identify how clinically integrated breastfeeding peer counseling (ci-BPC) addressed gaps in clinical lactation care for publicly-insured patients and patients of color. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a diverse cohort of 51 clinicians and 35 patients at 3 hospitals in a single health system, 2022-2024. Interviews were analyzed for themes using the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Research Framework. RESULTS: Patients and clinicians reported individual and healthcare barriers and facilitators. Patient brea

Neural sensitivity to peer hierarchies: Risks for depressive symptoms for low status adolescents.

Popularity is increasingly salient and impactful in adolescence, and unpopular youth are at significantly greater risk of experiencing depressive symptoms. However, adolescents can vary in their neural sensitivity to social stimuli, such that some adolescents may be more impacted by social status than others. We examined whether adolescents' neural sensitivity to popular and unpopular peers moderates the extent that their own social status is related to trajectories of depressive symptoms across 5 years (6th-10th grades). During an fMRI scan, adolescents from the southeastern United States (n

Exploring core competence in first-year medical students through narrative medicine and peer-assisted learning: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Early development of core competencies is essential in medical education, yet traditional medical curricula often struggle to bridge the gap between biomedical knowledge and humanistic application. Drawing on social constructivism, this study examines an integrated Narrative Medicine (NM) and Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) model designed to facilitate the transition from foundational knowledge to contextualized professional application. METHODS: An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was employed. A 19-indicator Knowledge-Skills-Attitude (KSA) scale was developed via a Delph

Mapping remembering, recovering, and relating: At-risk mothers' needs across pregnancy and postpartum within a multimodal digital peer-support intervention.

PROBLEM: Perinatal research on mobile health interventions has shown limited attention to how at-risk mothers express their needs within structured, moderated, and clinically embedded digital platforms. Little is known about how these needs evolve longitudinally across the perinatal period. BACKGROUND: The perinatal period is marked by increased vulnerability to psychological distress and psychosocial stressors, especially among at-risk mothers. Mobile health interventions have therefore gained prominence as accessible strategies to support maternal wellbeing. AIM: This study examined the na

Social exclusion, but not withdrawal, is diminished by a friend's level of acceptance: A provisions model.

Using the Actor-Partner-Interdependence Model, a friend's level of peer acceptance on the stability of a child's social withdrawal and peer exclusion was assessed with a sample of 252 fifth- and sixth-grade girls and boys of European and North-African descent from lower- and upper-middle class neighborhoods in Montreal, Quebec, in 2015/2016. Sociometric choices at T1 were used to create 126 mutual friend dyads. Exclusion and withdrawal were measured at T1 and T2 with peer assessments, 8 weeks apart. Findings revealed that children who were highly excluded at T1 were relatively less excluded at

Co-designing a student-led digital assessment resource (SCAR-V) to enhance clinical reasoning in undergraduate nursing education: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Developing clinical reasoning and assessment literacy is central to undergraduate nursing education, yet students often struggle to demonstrate higher-level reasoning in written assessments. This study explored how co-design, guided by the Double Diamond framework and Interpretive Descriptive analysis, could inform the creation of a digital resource to support this progression. OBJECTIVES: To examine students' and educators' experiences of assessment and learning across Levels 5 and 6, and to co-design a peer-led digital resource to enhance clarity, authenticity, and inclusion in

Psychometric Properties of the Greek Version of the Relational Provisions Loneliness Questionnaire (RPLQ) in Early Adolescents.

BackgroundLoneliness during adolescence has increased worldwide in recent years and has been consistently associated with a broad range of adverse psychosocial outcomes. The availability of valid and reliable measures is essential for the early identification of loneliness and for the rigorous evaluation of intervention effectiveness. Nevertheless, multidimensional, psychometrically validated instruments for assessing loneliness in Greek adolescents remain limited.ObjectiveThe aim of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Greek version of the Relational Provisions

Exploring the Power of Peer-Related Social Factors in Mediating the Effects of Pain on Loneliness and Stress in Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain in adolescents is associated with loneliness and increases in stress, which in turn elevate the risk of worse pain-related outcomes. Positive peer-related social factors mediate the relationship between stress and loneliness amongst those without pain, but it is not known if this holds in the presence of pain characteristics. It is also unknown if peer-related social factors (e.g., social support) mediate the relationship between pain characteristics and loneliness. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey using validated measures was completed by 128 adolescents with chroni

Peer familiarity and lexical diversity in autistic and typically developing preschoolers during free play.

Differences in social communication may shape how autistic children use language with different interaction partners. This study examined lexical diversity during free play interactions with a friend and an acquaintance among 50 preschoolers (21 autistic and 29 typically developing). Each child participated in separate play sessions with the two partners. Overall, autistic children produced less lexically diverse language than TD children. TD children also demonstrated greater lexical diversity with friends than with acquaintances, whereas no systematic partner effect emerged for the autistic

Association Between Inclusive Educational Environments and Food Allergy Comprehension Among Preschool Children: A Quasi-Experimental Digital Intervention Study.

Background/Objectives: This study examined whether sharing a class with a peer with physician-diagnosed food allergy (FA) was associated with post-intervention FA comprehension among preschool children. Methods: A four-month ARCS motivation model-based digital nutrition education program was delivered to 163 five-year-old preschoolers from nine public kindergartens. The program provided instruction on knowledge of balanced diets and FA. Preschoolers were classified as inclusive (at least one peer with physician-diagnosed FA in the same class; n = 75) or non-inclusive (n = 88). Dietary balance

Peer relationships and social-affective functioning of children with critical congenital heart defects and comparison classmates.

OBJECTIVE: Children with critical congenital heart defects (cCHD) have an increased risk of neurodevelopmental impairment. Deficits in executive functioning (EF) and social-affective abilities may co-occur, undermining peer relationships. Social difficulties faced by children with cCHD have not yet been described in detail nor linked to specific cognitive or social-affective skills. This study compares children with cCHD and healthy classmates on these outcomes and examines whether social-affective deficits predict peer relationship difficulties independently of impairment in EF. METHODS: Chi

How gender is associated with physical bullying and victimization across adolescent stages.

BACKGROUND: Physical bullying remains a significant form of peer aggression during adolescence, a developmental period marked by rapid bodily, psychological, and social change. Although gender differences in bullying have been widely documented, less is known about whether the association between gender and physical bullying perpetration and physical victimization varies across adolescent stages in contemporary non-WEIRD settings. METHODS: This study conducted a secondary data analysis of openly available survey data from 169 school-going adolescents in India. Participants were grouped into t

Digital Peer Support Intervention for Family Caregivers of Individuals With Neuromuscular Disease: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular diseases (NMD) affect nerves and muscles, resulting in weakness and often profound disability. Family caregivers of individuals with NMD experience significant psychological burden, stress, and reduced well-being. Digital peer support interventions may help to ameliorate these negative impacts. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effect of a 12-week digital peer support intervention compared to usual care on caregiver mastery, competence, stress, burden, anxiety, and depression among family caregivers of individuals with NMD. METHODS: We conducted a parallel-group m

Associations between family and peer self-harm exposure and self-harm behaviors among young adults: Findings from the SSNE study.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm among young adults is a significant public health concern influenced by psychosocial, demographic, and environmental factors. Although prior research has emphasized social contagion and mental health risk, less is known about how exposure to self-harm within family and peer networks relates to variation in self-harm behaviors. This study examined cross-sectional associations among social exposure to self-harm, mental health indicators, and sociodemographic characteristics using data from the Spatial Social Network and Environmental Exposure (SSNE) study. METHODS: Data fr

Making Interventions More Effective: Changes in Theoretical Constructs During Delivery of a Peer-Led Physical Activity Program for Breast Cancer Survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Theory-based physical activity (PA) interventions improve moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) among breast cancer survivors, yet limited research has examined when psychosocial changes occur during intervention delivery. Understanding temporal changes in theoretical constructs during PA adoption may enhance intervention delivery and outcomes. The purpose of this study is to examine longitudinal changes in self-efficacy, self-regulation and affect (intrapersonal constructs from Social Cognitive Theory) and social support (interpersonal construct) during a 12-week theory-bas
