Differential Co-Development of Vocabulary Knowledge and Reading Comprehension for Students with and without Learning Disabilities.

In this large-scale study of students from Title 1 schools (N = 14,773), we used multiple-group latent change score (LCS) modeling to investigate the developmental relations between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension in students with a school-identified learning disability (LD, n = 627) and typically developing students (n = 14,146). Students were tested for their vocabulary breadth and passage comprehension skills in Kindergarten through fourth grade. For typically developing students, there were bidirectional influences between their vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension

A longitudinal study of self-control at the transition to secondary school: Considering the role of pubertal status and parenting.

Higher self-control in children and adolescents is associated with a range of positive outcomes in adulthood. However, little is known about the naturalistic development of self-control during early adolescence and the factors that affect this. We examined the role of puberty and parenting style as theoretically important influences on stability and change in self-control. A longitudinal (3 waves), multiple-informant dataset of children entering early adolescence (M = 11 years) was used to explore longitudinal change in self-control using latent growth curve modelling. Children's self-control

Developing a systems-based programme theory for reducing night-time interactive electronic device use and improving sleep among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent night-time use of interactive electronic devices (IEDs) is increasingly linked to poor sleep, mental health challenges, and reduced academic performance. However, existing interventions often overlook the complex systems shaping these behaviours. This study presents a first-of-its-kind systems-based programme theory for CLOCK OFF - a peer influence intervention aimed at reducing night-time IED use and improving adolescent sleep - created through novel participatory mapping activities and analyses, which involved adolescents, parents and teachers. METHODS: We conducted f…

Optimizing a community-engaged multi-level group intervention to reduce substance use: an application of the multiphase optimization strategy.

BACKGROUND: Rates of alcohol and illicit drug use (AIDU) are consistently similar across racial groups (Windsor and Negi, J Addict Dis 28:258-68, 2009; Keyes et al. Soc Sci Med 124:132-41, 2015). Yet AIDU has significantly higher consequences for residents in distressed communities with concentrations of African Americans (DCAA - i.e., localities with high rates of poverty and crime) who also have considerably less access to effective treatment of substance use disorders (SUD). This project is optimizing Community Wise, an innovative multi-level behavioral-health intervention created in partne

What influences initiation of alcohol related discussions between healthcare professions and older adults? A systematic literature review and narrative synthesis.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol consumption has implications for physical and mental health, yet al.cohol related discussions between older adults (OA) and healthcare professionals (HCP) are limited. This review aimed to identify what influences the initiation (or not) of alcohol-related discussions between HCP and OA. METHOD: PsycINFO, Medline, CINAHL and references of relevant papers were searched. Peer-reviewed reports of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method original studies, written in English that reported on the influences on alcohol related discussions with OA (55+) were included. It takes one to know one: exploring patient dialogue on rosacea web-based platforms and their potential for significant harm.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a non-curable skin condition, leading patients to turn self-management options from web-based platforms. Self-management can be dangerous possibly under-reported. AIM: To discover the extent of online material and determine the potential for harm influenced by rosacea internet sources. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Material analyzed included search engines, apps, YouTube, forums and Facebook groups. As Facebook and forums were most active, they became the core focus. A passive 'fly on the wall' approach allowed observation of user posts and their content. RESULTS: Three broad

Referral Network Increases Physicians' Adoption of Active Surveillance for Localized Prostate Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study Using SEER-Medicare.

Physicians' referral networks influence the information they obtain from peers and how fast they adopt new treatment modality. This study employs a cross-sectional design. We examined how urologists' referral network connections via primary care physicians influence the adoption of active surveillance for localized prostate cancer, using SEER-Medicare data (2001-2015). We developed a referral network index to measure urologists' connections outside their practice. Multinomial logistic regression estimated the likelihood of active surveillance adoption, adjusting for patient, urologist, and mar

Social anxiety as a basis for friendship selection and socialization in adolescents' social networks.

Socially anxious children and adolescents have previously been found to have friends with similarly socially anxious, withdrawn behavioral characteristics. How peers might socialize social anxiety over time has, however, not been thoroughly investigated. We examined this in a sample of 834 youths (339 girls and 495 boys; M=14.29), followed for 3 years. We used the social network analysis software SIENA to analyze the data. The results showed that youths who were socially anxious were less popular and chose fewer friends in the network. They also tended to choose friends who were socially anxio

HIV testing patterns among urban YMSM of color.

The heightened level of risk for HIV infection among Black and Latino young men who have sex with men (YMSM) is driven by multilevel influences. Using cross-sectional data, we examined HIV testing patterns among urban YMSM of color in a high-HIV seroprevalence area (ages 16 to 21 years). Self-reported frequency of testing was high, with 42% of youth reporting testing at a greater frequency than recommended guidelines. There were no differences between less frequent and more frequent testers on sexual risk behaviors. Most (80%) youth cited reassurance of HIV-negative status as a reason for test

Effectiveness of Youth-Led awareness and advocacy intervention in shaping adolescents' attitudes toward tobacco products in Nepal: A quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use among adolescents (aged 10-19 years) remains a pressing public health concern, particularly in low-and middle-income countries like Nepal. Despite the presence of tobacco control policies, adolescents continue to access tobacco products. This study assessed effectiveness of a youth-led intervention in shaping adolescents' attitudes toward tobacco products in Budhanilkantha Municipality, Nepal. DESIGN AND METHODS: Quasi-experimental pre-post study was conducted among 305 adolescents. The intervention, implemented under the "Youth for Tobacco Initiative," included sensit

A Qualitative Analysis of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Intimate Partner Violence Among Young Sexual Minority Men.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to myriad adverse biopsychosocial health outcomes, especially among young sexual minority men (YSMM). IPV is characterized by physical, psychological, or sexual harm inflicted by an intimate partner, and a growing body of evidence suggests that ACEs have a significant role in negatively shaping the psychosocial development of children and adolescents. Yet, few studies have qualitatively explored IPV in YSMM, let alone how ACEs influence perceptions of IPV in this population. This study examines IPV experiences

PURPOSE: To examine whether survey setting was associated with youth reporting of current (past 30-day) use of any tobacco product, e-cigare … e-cigarettes differed by survey setting. Such differences could be due to lack of privacy at home, peer influence in school settings, and other unmeasured characteristics. Egoistic punishment outcompetes altruistic punishment in the spatial public goods game.

The evolution of costly punishment is a puzzle due to cooperators' second-order free-riding. Previous studies have proposed many solutions mainly focused on reducing the punishment cost or punishing second-order free riders directly or indirectly. We attempt to explain this confusion from the perspective of punishment motivation, which is why the punisher is willing to pay the cost. The answer is that the punisher is egoistic. Egoistic punishment aims to protect punishers' own cooperative benefits shared by the defectors. In such case, egoistic punishers would pay a cost in punishing defectors

Oral health of adolescents in West Africa: prioritizing its social determinants.

Oral health is a major public health issue in West Africa, yet it has gotten little attention. Individual and group disparities in health status are influenced by social determinants of health (SDH), which also affect oral health. Adolescence is a significant transition into adulthood, a time when the SDH can contribute to lifelong health status. This article explored the SDH associated with oral health behaviour, perception, and oral health development amongst adolescents in West Africa. This article engaged articles published in peer-reviewed journals relating to adolescents' oral health and

Anxiety in Attachment and Sexual Relationships in Adolescence: A Moderated Mediation Model.

Adolescence is characterized by several transformations, such as identity construction, progressive estrangement from parents, relational interest in peers, and body changes that also involve sexuality issues. In this process, attachment patterns play a fundamental role in relationships, and when these are dysfunctional, they can result in internalizing and externalizing problems. Often, females show their relational difficulties through internalizing expressions and males through externalizing expressions. Additionally, given the sexual progress involved in this life moment, psychological sym

Social modulation of drug use and drug addiction.

This review aims to demonstrate how social science and behavioral neurosciences have highlighted the influence of social interactions on drug use in animal models. In neurosciences, the effect of global social context that are distal from drug use has been widely studied. For human and other social animals such as monkeys and rodents, positive social interactions are rewarding, can overcome drug reward and, in all, protect from drug use. In contrast, as other types of stress, negative social experiences facilitate the development and maintenance of drug abuse. However, interest recently emerge
