BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular disease and peripheral neuropathy may cause drop foot with or without evertor weakness. We developed a helical-shaped, non-articulated ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) to provide medial-lateral stability while allowing mobility, to improve gait capacity. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of the helical AFO (hAFO) on functional gait capacity (6-min walk test) in people with peripheral neuropathy or neuromuscular disease (NMD) causing unilateral drop foot and compare with a posterior leaf spring AFO (plsAFO). Secondary aims were to compare functional mobility, 3D kinematic an

Acute-on-chronic exertional compartment syndrome is rare and may be easily missed without a high degree of awareness and clinical suspicion. We report a case of unrecognized acute-on-chronic exertional compartment syndrome in a recreational soccer player. The late sequela of this condition, foot drop, was successfully treated with transfer of the peroneus longus tendon.

The study was performed to evaluate neurological complication of 562 patients who had undergone primary total hip replacement. Lesions of sciatic, femoral and common peroneal nerve occurred in 18 patients (3.2%). Paresis of peroneal nerve was demonstrated in 15 patients. Within this group 7 patients had elongation of the extremity above 4 cm, and 8 patient had it in the range of 2-3 cm. Paresis of common peroneal nerve took place after direct compression of region of fibular head. Lesion of femoral nerve happened twice. In the group of 14 patients clinical symptoms of nerve paresis healed spon

BACKGROUND: Nonsystemic vasculitic neuropathy (NSVN) is a vasculitis syndrome clinically restricted to the peripheral nervous system. Although treatment may improve prognosis, daily activities of such patients after treatment have not been well studied.
METHODS: We evaluated clinical features, laboratory data, nerve conduction, and sural nerve biopsy findings for 16 unbiased consecutive patients with NSVN.
RESULTS: Initial symptoms included neuropathic pain (31%) and lower limb sensory disturbance (19%). The mean duration between disease onset and initial treatment was 4.1 ± 4.8 months. Mean

OBJECTIVE: Moxibustion, an external treatment used in traditional Chinese medicine, is increasingly applied to diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). We compared the effectiveness of the principal moxibustion-containing treatment combinations for this condition. We searched for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) available by 14 April 2026. Sources were PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Medical Database and VIP Database. The resulting network meta-analysis (NMA) covered moxibustion (MOXI) and combinations with acupunctu

Persistent pain is a central characteristic of neuropathic pain conditions in humans. Knowing whether rodent models of neuropathic pain produce persistent pain is therefore crucial to their translational applicability. We investigated the spared nerve injury (SNI) model of neuropathic pain and the formalin pain model in rats using positron emission tomography (PET) with the metabolic tracer [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) to determine if there is ongoing brain activity suggestive of persistent pain. For the formalin model, under brief anesthesia we injected one hindpaw with 5% formalin and the F

OBJECTIVES: In diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) patients, the effect of folic acid and homocysteine has been related to components of nerve conduction velocity (NCV). The objective of this study was to determine the effect of folic acid supplementation on NCV in DPN patients.
METHODS: Patients were randomized to receive either 1 mg of folic acid (n = 40) or placebo (n = 40) for 16 weeks. Blood samples were collected to assess serum folic acid and homocysteine concentrations, and NCV was performed for assessment of diabetic neuropathy.
RESULTS: At 16 weeks, in the supplemented group, serum level

The neuronal forms of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) are genetically heterogeneous with observed autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive and X-linked dominant inheritance. All three forms are characterized by degeneration of select populations of motor and sensory neurons with accompanying atrophy and degeneration of their axons. Large calibre myelinated fibres are predominantly affected and fibre degeneration and fibre loss progresses from distally to proximally. Attempts of regeneration are noted in all except the severe childhood form. The clinical picture is that of peronea

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute bilateral foot drop is rare and may be due to peripheral or central lesions. The purpose of this case report was to describe the differential diagnosis and recovery of a patient with low back pain (LBP) that awoke with bilateral foot drop.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 39-year-old man with a history of LBP awoke with a steppage gait pattern. Spinal imaging and tapping were negative for sinister pathologies. A subsequent history taken by the physical therapist uncovered that the patient had previously taken a narcotic and slept in a kneeling position to relieve his LBP. Str

BACKGROUND: A popliteal nerve block is a common analgesic procedure for patients undergoing surgery on their knee, foot, or ankle. This procedure carries less risk in a surgical setting compared with other forms of anesthesia such as a spinal block. Previous reports demonstrated few to no complications with the use of this nerve block, but it is unclear whether these data are consistent with the recent increase in use of this analgesic procedure for lower extremity surgery.
METHODS: Retrospectively, a busy orthopedic foot and ankle practice performed a chart review examining for postoperative

BACKGROUND: Common peroneal nerve (CPN) entrapment at the fibular head is the most common nerve entrapment syndrome at the lower limbs. Motor deficits predominate and the risk of persistent functional impairment is the main concern. The objective was to evaluate outcomes of neurolysis and to evaluate the benefits of performing surgery early.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of 15 patients (mean age, 32 years) treated with neurolysis. The diagnosis was idiopathic CPN entrapment in ten patients, indirect nerve injury with CPN paralysis due to an ankle injury

Background. PMP22-related neuropathies comprise a spectrum of predominantly demyelinating disorders, most commonly Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1A (CMT1A; 17p12 duplication) and hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP; 17p12 deletion), with rarer phenotypes due to PMP22 sequence variants (CMT1E, Dejerine-Sottas syndrome [DSS]). Methods. We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review (PROSPERO ID: 1139921) of PubMed and Scopus (January 2015-August 2025). Eligible studies reported genetically confirmed PMP22-related neuropathies with clinical and/or neurophysiological data.

Foot drop is very common among people with chronic incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) and likely stems from SCI that disturbs the corticospinal activation of the ankle dorsiflexor tibialis anterior (TA). Thus, if one can recover or increase the corticospinal excitability reduced by SCI, motor function recovery may be facilitated. Here, we hypothesized that in people suffering from weak dorsiflexion due to chronic incomplete SCI, increasing the TA motor-evoked potential (MEP) through operant up-conditioning can improve dorsiflexion during locomotion, while in people without any injuries, it wo

BACKGROUND: Intraneural ganglion cysts are rare. They affect the peripheral nerves. According to the most widely accepted theory (articular/synovial theory), the cysts are formed from a capsular defect of an adjacent joint, so that synovial fluid spreads along the epineurium of a nerve branch. This leads to diverse neurological symptoms. We will illustrate this disease based on three of our own cases.
METHODS: Patients were examined between 2011 and 2018 using lower limb MRI. MRI scans were also performed for the follow-up examinations.
CASE STUDIES AND DISCUSSION: The patients had many symp

We present the clinical case of a fifty-year-old man who presented two times with a foot elevator paresis and an erysipel first on the right and after two months on the left side. Afterwards, we carried out a thorough case history with the help of clinical, radiological and magnetic resonance imaging. Even so the clinical pathology of the foot elevator paresis could not be manifested. A compartment syndrome could be discounted. In the context of the second stay during a neurology examination on both legs electromyography was performed and the nerve speed was tested. A peripheral peroneus pares

Primary (non-paraneoplastic) autoimmune cerebellar ataxia is immune-mediated and often responds to immunotherapy. The anti-Ca/ARHGAP26 antibody is a rare cause; reported experience comprises individual cases and small series, in which peripheral polyneuropathy but not central deep-sensory involvement is recognized. We report a man in his 50s with one month of subacute, progressive gait instability who had both cerebellar and deep-sensory ataxia. Proprioception and vibration sense were markedly impaired in the arms. Nerve conduction studies showed a steeply length-dependent axonal neuropathy: s
