Two-phase treatment of panic disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder with associated personality features resulting from childhood abuse: case study.

The treatment of a women diagnosed with panic disorder with Agoraphobia and posttraumatic stress disorder and maladaptive personality features resulting from childhood sexual and physical abuse is described. The treatment consisted of nine sessions of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia and nine sessions of implosive therapy (IT) for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. CBT decreased scores on the clinical scales of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), but did not reduce revised Impact of Event Scale (IES) scores, or Dimensional Assessment of Personality Probl…

A Twin Study of Normative Personality and DSM-IV Personality Disorder Criterion Counts: Evidence for Separate Genetic Influences.

OBJECTIVE: Both normative personality and DSM-IV personality disorders have been found to be heritable. However, there is limited knowledge about the extent to which the genetic and environmental influences underlying DSM personality disorders are shared with those of normative personality. The aims of this study were to assess the phenotypic similarity between normative and pathological personality and to investigate the extent to which genetic and environmental influences underlying individual differences in normative personality account for symptom variance across DSM-IV personality disorde

Personality and Attachment in Transsexual Adults.

The main aim of this study was to investigate the associations between personality features and attachment patterns in transsexual adults. We explored mental representations of attachment, assessed personality traits, and possible personality disorders. Forty-four individuals diagnosed with gender identity disorder (now gender dysphoria), 28 male-to-female and 16 female-to-male, were evaluated using the Shedler-Westen assessment procedure-200 (SWAP-200) to assess personality traits and disorders; the adult attachment interview was used to evaluate their attachment state-of-mind. Differences in personality functioning impairment in mood, anxiety, and personality disorders: a cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders and the latest eleventh version of the International Classification of Diseases implement the level of impairment in self and interpersonal personality functioning (Level of Personality Functioning Scale - LPFS) as a core feature of personality pathology. However, some studies have indicated that personality functioning is also impaired in other mental disorders, but a more thorough exploration is missing. Thus, this study aims to develop profiles of levels of personality functioning in people with personality disorders and some

Personality disorder in a probation cohort: Demographic, substance misuse and forensic characteristics.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of personality disorder among community supervised offenders may have important implications for their management. There is, however, a dearth of contextual information on personality disorder in such populations. AIMS: This study aimed to identify demographic, substance use and forensic features that distinguish community-sentenced offenders with personality disorder from those without. METHODS: One hundred and seventy-three offenders under community supervision were screened for personality disorder using the Standardised Assessment of Personality--Abbreviated Sc

An Integrated Developmental Approach to Personality Disorders in Adolescence: Expanding Kernberg's Object Relations Theory.

This article is a tribute to Dr. Otto F. Kernberg and his contribution to the theoretical understanding of personality pathology in adolescence. In his object relations theory of the structure of personality, an integrated identity is considered central to healthy personality functioning and is contrasted with identity diffusion, which is posited to underlie the maladaptive interpersonal functioning of patients with severe personality disorders. His work provided an early theoretical foundation for the understanding and treatment of personality disorders in adults, but a need remained for a de

Maternal personality disorder symptoms in primary health care: associations with mother-toddler interactions at one-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Research is scarce on how mothers' symptoms of personality disorders are linked to the mother-toddler relationship. In this study we have explored the extent to which these symptoms are associated with mutual mother-toddler interactions assessed 1 year after the initial assessment. METHODS: Mothers and their 0-24-month-old children (n = 112) were recruited by nurses at well-baby clinics due to either self-reported or observed mother-toddler interaction problems. At inclusion (T1), mothers filled out the DSM-IV and ICD-10 Personality Questionnaire (DIP-Q), which measures symptoms o

Line bisection performance in patients with personality disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Normal line bisection deviation to the left of the true centre has been interpreted as resulting from relative right hemisphere activation. Right hemisphere involvement has also been associated with the problems in dependency and attachment from infancy to adulthood. This hemispheric association predicts that patients diagnosed with dependent personality disorder will deviate significantly to the left on the line bisection task. METHODS: This hypothesis was tested by comparing the results of the line bisection task obtained respectively from 30 right-handed healthy volunteers an

[Personality disorders in late life: an overview].

As efforts on refining the concept of personality disorder (PD) have increasingly advanced, the diagnosis and treatment of elderly patients with PD have emerged as a new clinical issue. Personality traits of the elderly are a result of accumulated influences of a large variety of factors: original character traits, physiological changes caused by aging, major life events and experiences, etc. Accordingly, the assessment of PD in elderly patients needs information of the respective vast areas. To distinguish PD from enduring personality changes caused by various physical and psychiatric conditi

Personality traits and disorders among transsexuals.

A group of transsexuals, 9 biological men and 10 women, was assessed according to clinical DSM-III-R diagnosis and a self-report instrument for Axis II diagnoses based on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID screen). A control group of 133 individuals was assessed by the same instrument. Combined with a functional criterion according to the Global Assessment of Functioning, the SCID screen showed good agreement with clinical Axis II diagnoses. The overall proportion of Axis II criteria fulfilled, proportion of criteria fulfilled for every single personality disorder and number

Measurement invariance of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 across sex.

INTRODUCTION: There has been an international movement towards dimensional models of personality disorders (PDs) in the last decades, which culminated in the publication of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) in the Emerging Measures and Models section of the DSM-5. This model was accompanied by a APA-sanctioned Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) for the assessment of the AMPD pathological personality traits. One major issue with the assessment of personality disorders pertains to sex differences, and measurement invariance across sex in assessment instruments for PDs is

Personality Pathology and Functional Impairment in Patients With Hypochondriasis.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates substantial co-occurance of personality pathology and hypochondriasis, which both involve significant psychosocial impairment. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to investigate the role of personality pathology for explaining functional impairment in patients with hypochondriasis, while accounting for the influence of health anxiety severity. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with hypochondriasis (N = 84; 60% women) were administered interview- and self-report instruments for personality pathology, health anxiety severity, and functional impairment (general, social, and ph

Childhood antecedents of adolescent personality disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the childhood antecedents of personality disorders that are diagnosed in adolescence. METHOD: A randomly selected community sample of 641 youths was assessed initially in childhood and followed longitudinally over 10 years. Childhood behavior ratings were based on maternal report; diagnoses of adolescent personality disorders were based on data obtained from both maternal and youth informants. Four composite measures of childhood behavior problems were used: conduct problems, depressive symptoms, anxiety/fear, and immaturity. Adolescent

Assessing Measurement Consistency: A Study of the BPFSC Invariance Across Age and Sex in Romanian Adolescents.

The Borderline Personality Feature Scale for Children (BPFSC) is a widely used instrument and currently the only dimensional measure to investigate Borderline Personality features in children and adolescents. The present study aimed to investigate the factor structure and measurement invariance across age and sex in a community sample of 634 adolescents (mean age = 16.72, standard deviation = 1.31). To test for measurement invariance, we conducted multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (MG-CFA). Analysis showed residual invariance across age and sex. Based on the results, we conclude that BP

Personality subtypes of suicidal adults.

Research into personality factors related to suicidality suggests substantial variability among suicide attempters. A potentially useful approach that accounts for this complexity is personality subtyping. As part of a large sample looking at personality pathology, this study used Q-factor analysis to identify subtypes of 311 adult suicide attempters using Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure-II personality profiles. Identified subtypes included internalizing, emotionally dysregulated, dependent, hostile-isolated, psychopathic, and anxious somatizing. Subtypes differed in hypothesized ways on c

Gender bias in self-report personality disorder inventories.

There has been considerable controversy and research regarding gender biases in the diagnosis of personality disorders, but few studies have explored whether personality disorder self-report inventories might contain gender biases. The current study investigated whether items from three commonly used inventories evidence a potential for gender bias. Subjects were from outpatient mental health clinics. Items were considered gender biased if they exhibited gender differences and failed to correlate with or, more importantly, correlated negatively with dysfunction. Thirty-eight items evidenced po
