[The influence of emotional state and coping ability on the outcome of the assisted reproductive technology among infertile couples].

INTRODUCTION: Infertility and its treatment impose significant physical and emotional burden on infertile couples. The most commonly used assisted reproductive technology is the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Approximately one third of the treatments results in pregnancy. The aim of our study is to explore psychosocial factors that have an influence on the chance of IVF treatment success. METHODS: 104 infertile couples undergoing IVF treatment participated in our research, of which 49 couples achieved pregnancy after treatment and 55 couples did not. The emotional state was assessed by the Pos

Further validation of the MMPI-3 personality disorder syndrome scales in a community mental health sample.

The purpose of the present study was to replicate and extend research on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) Personality Disorder (PD) Syndrome scales. A total of 289 participants were recruited from the community in Dunedin, New Zealand-all of whom were engaged in mental health treatment. We evaluated the validity of the PD Syndrome scales against various measures of traditional PDs, personality traits, and personality dysfunction using self-report, clinical-rating, and informant-report criteria. The findings provide support for the criterion validity of the MMPI-3 PD s…

Level of personality functioning and maladaptive personality traits in relation to depression and anxiety symptoms in middle and older adults.

A growing body of research suggests that personality pathology underpins various mental disorders and serves as a risk factor for developing emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety. This study examined how levels of personality functioning and pathological traits predict the severity of these symptoms in a community sample of middle and older adults (N = 530). The Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire, Patient Health Questionnaire, Self and Interpersonal Functioning Scale, and Personality Inventory for ICD-11 were used. Regression analyses revealed that impaired identity and em…

Prospective Associations Between Personality Traits and Major Depressive Disorder Symptom Severity: The Mediating Role of Illness Representations.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) patients' personality traits and illness representations are linked to MDD severity. However, the associations between personality and illness representations in MDD and the mediating role of illness representations between personality and MDD severity have not been investigated. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the aforementioned associations and the possible mediating role of illness representations between personality and MDD severity. One hundred twenty-five patients with a MDD diagnosis, aged 48.18 ± 13.92 (84% females), participated in the stu

Relationships of dissociative disorders and personality traits in opium addicts on methadone treatment.

BACKGROUND: Drug abuse is a major public health problem. Some believe that when dissociation fails to defend against emotional, physical, or sexual trauma, the person will find relief from unpleasant thoughts and emotions in opium use. On the other hand, personality disorders are considered as important predictors of treatment outcomes in drug abusers. Due to lack of adequate research in this regard, we evaluated dissociative disorders and personality traits of opium addicts on methadone treatment. METHODS: This cross-sectional analytic study included 111 non-psychotic subjects on methadone t

Temperament and character profile in patients with essential hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The main debates on hyperhidrosis are whether there are some personality features such as anxiety or stress, or whether the psychological symptoms are due to negative social feedback from early life. We aimed to investigate the temperament and character dimensions with a psychobiological inventory. METHODS: We recruited patients with hyperhidrosis (n=26) and chronic renal failure (n=44) as well as healthy subjects (n=22) from dermatology and nephrology clinics and the general population in Afyonkarahisar. All subjects were required to perform a temperament and character inven

A comparison of the MMPI results for psychiatric patients and male applicants for transsexual surgery.

Previous studies have been evenly divided in concluding that male sex change applicants do or do not evidence signs of psychopathology on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory testing. To clarify the discrepant findings, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory scale comparisons were made between sex change applicants who had been living continuously as women, applicants who had been living predominantly as men, and groups of psychiatric inpatients and outpatients. Findings revealed that members of both applicant groups were more likely than psychiatric patients to score high on a mea…

Exploring the association between lower serum BDNF levels and delayed-onset PTSD in physically injured patients with vulnerable personality traits: A two-year prospective study.

This longitudinal study investigated the relationships among serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (sBDNF) levels, personality types, and the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), distinguishing between earlier- and delayed-onset PTSD over two years in individuals with physical injuries. A total of 895 adults with moderate to severe injuries were recruited from a trauma center and assessed within one month post-injury. Baseline evaluations included sBDNF measurements and personality assessments using the Big Five Inventory-10, which classified participants as having either res

A bifactor model of personality organization in adolescence: the validity of a brief screening measure assessing severity and core domains of functioning.

BACKGROUND: Both the latest edition of the DSM-5 as well as the new ICD-11 have established a new focus in the diagnosis of personality disorders: the assessment of personality functioning. This recent shift in focus converges with long-standing psychodynamic conceptualizations of personality pathology, particularly Kernberg's object relations model. Although a significant amount of research supports these models in adults, much less is known about the validity of these frameworks in youth. Considering the paucity of brief measures of personality functioning in adolescents, the current study a

Eating disorders during the adolescence: personality characteristics associated with anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies provide relevant information about the relationship between personality and eating disorders (ED). The involvement of personality factors in the etiology and maintenance of ED indicates the need of emphasizing the study of the adolescent's personality when diagnosed of ED. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to analyze the adolescent's personality profiles that differ significantly in anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), and to explore the most common profiles and their associations with those subtypes of eating disorders (ED). METHODS: A total o

Personality assessment based on the five-factor model of personality structure in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Several characteristic personality types have been reported for glaucoma patients in previous studies. However, none of the previous studies used a common structural theory of personality. In this study, we conducted a multicenter cross-sectional case-control study using the recently established five-factor model of personality structure. METHODS: Personality was evaluated using the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), which is a questionnaire specifically designed to test the five-factor model of personality: neuroticism (N), extraversion (E), openness

Meta-analysis of the implied distribution of callous-unemotional traits across sampling methods and informant.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits have been measured in a variety of sample-types (e.g., community or forensic) and from the perspective of different informants (e.g., self-report or parent-report) using the inventory of callous-unemotional traits total score (ICU-T). Although the positive association between CU traits and antisocial behavior is uncontroversial, the degree to which sample-types are different from each other has received little attention despite such knowledge being important for generalization and interpretation of research findings. To address this gap in the literature, we est
