Cigarette smoking, alcohol, and oral contraceptive use by type A adolescent--the Bogalusa Heart Study.

Type A behavior pattern (TABP) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) disease and is characterized by hostile, aggressive, competitive behavior. TABP characteristics and CV risk factors have been found in children and adolescents. TABP has been correlated with adult alcohol consumption, but studies associating Type A and smoking are mixed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the smoking, alcohol use, and oral contraceptive use of Type A children and adolescents. The Hunter-Wolf Type A scale and a health habits questionnaire were evaluated for 2092 children, ages 8-17 yea

Psychogenic pain and psychological variables: a psychometric study.

A sample of 41 women suffering from psychogenic pain according to DSM-III diagnostic criteria were psychometrically studied, in order to ascertain if they showed specific psychological traits or mechanisms. Type A behavior, extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism and dissimulation and hostility-aggressivity traits were the psychological variables studied both in the pain sample and in a matched control group. Psychogenic pain patients were significantly more neurotic and suspicious and less physically aggressive than healthy subjects and also scored significantly higher in dissimulation, which

[Correlation of brain electrical activity and motivation in healthy people].

Motivation dominates in the structure of the personality and is one of the basic notions which explains the dynamics of the behavior. The literature has little data about neurophysiology of motivation. The aim of the research was to study the correlation between the motivational sphere and electrical activity of the brain at the influence of different provocations. 24 healthy people at the age of 26-36 years were examined. The results of motivation tests turned out to be uniform (the motivation to success was of a moderate or high level, there were mean values of readiness to risk and low moti

Assessing the seeds of relationship decay. Using implicit evaluations to detect the early stages of disillusionment.

Using two longitudinal samples, we sought to identify the beginnings of relationship decay by validating the partner-focused go/no-go association task (partner-GNAT), an implicit measure assessing evaluations of romantic partners. In Study 1, we assessed positive and negative attitudes using generic positive and negative stimulus words (e.g., gift and death, respectively) as targets, whereas in Study 2, we used relationship-specific positive and negative stimulus words (e.g., accepting and attacking, respectively) as targets. Results from both samples showed that positive implicit partner eval

Personality, temperament, and character dimensions and the DSM-IV personality disorders in substance abusers.

The authors evaluated the relationship between P. T. Costa and R. R. McCrae's (1992) NEO 5-factor model, C. R. Cloninger's (1993) 7-factor Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), and the American Psychiatric Association's (1994) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th ed., personality disorders in 370 inpatient and outpatient alcohol, cocaine, and opiate abusers. NEO Neuroticism was associated with many disorders, and different patterns for Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Extraversion emerged for the different disorders. Several TCI scales were associated with diffe

Clinical comparisons and Rorschach response differences between visual imagery reactors and nonreactors.

Rorschach cards were administered to psychotherapy patients under two conditions. In the imagery condition, cards were presented to each subject briefly, following which the cards were visualized with eyes closed and any visual imagery sequences were reported. This procedure was preceded by a standard Rorschach administration. Subjects were classified into Imagery Reactor and Nonreactor groups, according to the degree to which they responded to the instructions. The examples presented illustrate the qualitative differences in conflictual and affect-laden material between Reactors and Nonreacto

[Tuberculosis as a component of the sub-culture].

The paper presents the results of a study of 152 males (mean age, 45.7+/-3.8 years) with fibrocavernous pulmonary tuberculosis and 123 males (mean age, 41.2+/-3.6 years) with infiltrative pulmonary tuberculosis, who reside in the Samara Region. The examination of all patients was comprehensive, which included physical examination, functional studies, psychological tests, and a special questionnaire survey. The data on 108 apparently healthy males served as a control of SMPI and Luscher tests. The social situation was analyzed. A correlation analysis was made to define a relationship of the sat

The clinical assessment of obscure auditory dysfunction--1. Auditory and psychological factors.

We define obscure auditory dysfunction (OAD) as the clinical presentation of reported difficulty understanding speech in the presence of noise accompanied by clinically "normal" hearing thresholds, and no other obvious cause. The term deliberately avoids particular pathophysiological connotations. A detailed characterization of such patients was undertaken as the basis for future diagnosis and management of OAD by clinicians. Twenty patients were compared with 20 pairs of controls (matched for age, sex, educational level, and noise exposure) on tests of auditory, linguistic, and psychological

Perceived personality change after traumatic brain injury II: comparing participant and informant perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper was to correlate informant personality change (PC) judgements following moderate-severe traumatic brain injury with quantitative neurobehavioural measures and to contrast the neurobehavioural correlates of informant and participant judgements of PC. PARTICIPANTS: Informant-participant pairs were recruited from a medico-legal clinic passing effort tests (N = 31) and a National Health Service clinic (N = 40). MEASURES: Participants were assessed on Wechsler tests of general ability, tests of executive functioning (Zoo Map and Fluency) and emotional distre

Early detection of harmful alcohol consumption: comparison of clinical, laboratory, and self-report screening procedures.

This report describes the conceptual and empirical basis for the development of a screening instrument to identify persons with potentially harmful alcohol consumption. As part of a larger project sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO), alcoholic (N = 65) and nonalcoholic (N = 187) research volunteers completed a battery of assessments that included laboratory tests, a physical examination, a diagnostic interview, personality measures, and two standard self-report screening questionnaires. The data were analyzed to evaluate the validity of diagnostic measures that could subsequently

Keratoconus, myopia, and personality.

PURPOSE: To determine whether there is an association between keratoconus and personality attributes including obsessionality traits. METHODS: We reviewed all charts in the regional contact lens clinic, identifying patients who had attended from January 1997 to January 2000 and had a diagnosis of either keratoconus or myopia of at least 6 diopters. This yielded 289 keratoconics and 149 myopes who were contacted by mail and invited to complete two standardized personality questionnaires (Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory and the revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire). Psychological changes during thyrotoxicosis.

Psychological changes during hyperthyroidism are well known. However, no studies were performed in order to quantify or evaluate them in numerical details. We have studied the personality of 15 women with Graves' disease by means of the 16PF Cattell Test, before and after treatment of hyperthyroidism with surgery or radioactive iodine. The first test was performed when patients relapsed the thyrotoxicosis after a period of euthyroidism, achieved through the treatment with antithyroid drugs during one year. At the time of the second test all patients had 6-12 months of euthyroidism. Hormonal ci

Gender differences in the relationship between hostility and the type A behavior pattern.

A group of 97 male and 111 female undergraduates completed the Jenkins Activity Survey, the Framingham Type A Scale, the Adjective Checklist Type A Scale, the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory. A factor analysis revealed three dimensions: Anger-Emotionality, Anger-Aggression, and Residual Pattern A. All Type A measures loaded highly on the Type A factor, with the Jenkins Activity Survey loading the highest. The Framingham Type A Scale was related to Anger-Emotionality, the Adjective Checklist Type A Scale was related to Anger-Aggression, and the

Personality profiles in patients with eating disorders.

The present review focused on the personality profiles of patients with eating disorders. Studies using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorder showed high rates of diagnostic co-occurrence between eating disorders and personality disorders. The most commonly observed were histrionic, obsessive-compulsive, avoidant, dependent and borderline personality disorders. Studies using the Cloninger's personality theory suggested that high Harm Avoidance might be relevant to the pathology of anorexia nervosa and high Novelty Seeking and Harm Avoidance to bulimia nervosa. Art and the Audiogram: How Skillful Observation Provides Insights to the History, Present, and Future.

Although simple, audiograms are a dynamic tool that, much like fine art, can be used by experts to decipher the history, present, and probable future of its subject. Through close comparison with El Greco's Burial of the Count Orgaz, a very well-known painting for its temporal complexity, a sample audiogram is examined through an artistic lens. That intimate relationship with time that El Greco's piece and audiograms share offers not only a layered interpretive narrative but also a humanities-based perspective on how to approach diagnostic testing.

Personality as a Predictor of Disability in Multiple Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: As personality changes and personality disorders are frequently observed in multiple sclerosis (MS), personality may be a prognostic factor for this disease. The present study investigated the influence of personality on disability, progression, and treatment adherence in MS. METHOD: Personality was assessed in 41 patients with Relapsing-Remitting MS (30 females; mean age = 42.63 years) using the NEO Personality Inventory-3rd edition. Disability was measured with the Expanded Disability Status Scale, and treatment adherence information was collected from the Swiss MS Cohort. Correl
