Smoking differently modifies suicide risk of affective disorders, substance use disorders, and social factors.

BACKGROUND: Although an association between smoking and suicide has repeatedly been shown, information about a modifying influence of smoking on other risk factors for suicide is lacking. METHODS: Axis I and Axis II disorders, sociodemographic factors, and tobacco use were assessed by a semi-structured interview including the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I (SCID-I) and Personality Disorders (SCID-II) in 163 suicides (mean age 49.6+/-19.3 years; 64.4% men;) by psychological autopsy method and by personal interview in 396 living population-based control persons (mean age 51.6+/

The relationship between borderline personality disorder and anxiety disorders.

Eleven "pure" borderlines, ten borderlines with depression, 16 "pure" depressives, and 31 normal subjects were compared on a number of standardized inventories of anxiety. While patient groups experienced more anxiety of all types than did normals, borderlines did not emerge as more anxious than other patient groups. Qualitative differences in the anxiety experienced by borderlines and nonborderlines are discussed.

Values as determinant of meaning among patients with psychiatric disorders in the perspective of recovery.

Recovery is a personal process of growth that involves hope, self-identity, meaning in life and responsibility. Determinants of meaning have not been explored among populations of patients with persistent psychiatric conditions. However, an evidence-based approach aiming at assessing such determinants should provide some insight into the psychotherapeutic aspects of recovery. We tested a model hypothesizing that some symptoms and social parameters of patients are related to values, and secondarily to meaning in life, and in turn that meaning is associated with various parameters, such as depre

Comorbidity in generalized anxiety disorder.

GAD has rates of comorbidity that equal or exceed those of other anxiety disorders, and it is one of the most common comorbid conditions with other disorders. Depressive disorders, especially MDD, and other anxiety disorders, especially panic disorder, most commonly co-occur. The pattern of comorbidity is consistent in community and clinical populations and in children and elderly people. Comorbidity is associated with greater impairment, more treatment seeking, and worse outcome among persons with GAD compared with pure GAD. Likewise, patients with panic disorder and MDD who have coexisting G

Depressive personality disorder: clinical implications.

Although the concept of a depressive personality has a long and rich tradition in psychiatry, it has only recently been included in any official nomenclature. Those afflicted with depressive personality have been subsumed under a variety of mood disorders and other personality disorders. This article presents criteria for depressive personality disorder that were developed for the DSM-IV Task Force. A framework for validating a personality disorder, including that of depressive personality disorder, is presented. Results of the DSM-IV Mood Disorders Field Trial relevant to this issue are repor

Personality variables in depressed patients and normal controls.

Depressed patients (n = 46) were compared with normal controls (n = 42) for their scores on 7 personality variables measured on 4 personality questionnaires. The scores of the depressed patients obtained during the index depressive episode were significantly higher for introversion, neuroticism, and hostility, and significantly lower for self-esteem, than those of controls. Similarly, a subset of the female depressed patients studied when in remission and euthymic also had significantly higher socres than female controls for neuroticism and hostility, with a trend for significantly lower self-

Assessment of Personality Profiles Among Patients Presenting With Deliberate Self-Harm at a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Deliberate self-harm (DSH) represents intentional self-inflicted physical injury encompassing both non-suicidal self-injurious acts and suicide attempts, constituting a significant psychiatric emergency with profound morbidity implications. Individuals with personality disorders demonstrate substantially elevated suicide attempt rates compared to those without personality pathology. Comprehensive psychosocial assessment remains fundamental for evaluating DSH presentations. While research has investigated socioeconomic determinants and personality disorders among adolescent populatio

A dimensional approach to assessing personality functioning: examining personality trait domains utilizing DSM-IV personality disorder criteria.

BACKGROUND: This study compared a dimensional, trait domain approach to characterizing personality pathology with the traditional polythetic approach with respect to their associations with interpersonal functioning and personality traits from the five factor model. METHODS: Psychiatric inpatients (N=1476) were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II personality disorders. Dimensional representations of trait domains were derived from reorganizing DSM-IV criteria into personality trait domains from DSM-5 Alternative Model. Dimensional scores and personality disorder

Covert visual attention in schizophrenia spectrum personality disordered subjects: visuospatial cuing and alerting effects.

A recent study observed lateralized deficit in the disengagement of covert visual attention in schizophrenic patients. Subsequent attempts to replicate this finding have had mixed results. Differences in the neuroleptic treatment or other secondary factors associated with schizophrenia are some of the possible reasons for these inconsistent findings. In this study, we examined the ability to shift covert visual attention in neuroleptic-naive, schizophrenia spectrum personality disordered (SSPD; n = 35) subjects and normal controls (n = 34) under a variety of spatial cuing and alerting conditio

Social phobia: further evidence of dimensional structure.

OBJECTIVE: Social phobia is a common mental disorder associated with significant impairment. Current research and treatment models of social phobia rely on categorical diagnostic conceptualizations lacking empirical support. This study aims to further research exploring whether social phobia is best conceptualized as a dimension or a discrete categorical disorder. METHODS: This study used three distinct taxometric techniques (mean above minus below a cut, maximum Eigen value and latent mode) to explore the latent structure of social phobia in two large epidemiological samples, using indicator

Exploring factors associated with psychiatric hospitalization for persons living with family.

This study investigates the combinations of factors associated with involuntary psychiatric admission for persons living with their family and whether these are differentiated by type of family. Data from consecutive admissions in public acute psychiatric units of Thessaloniki, Greece, collected over one-year period were analyzed via Latent Profile Analysis. Of the three ensued profiles, only one, consisting mainly of younger men diagnosed with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders living with their family of origin, is linked to involuntary hospitalization. The other two profiles include mainly ol

[A descriptive study of psychiatric care and pre-sentencing psychiatric reports in a French high-security prison].

CONTEXT: The high prevalence of psychiatric disorders among people in prison is well documented, and several hypotheses have been proposed to explain this overrepresentation. In France, the decrease in the number of people found by the judge to be not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder after a psychiatric expertise could play a crucial role. The Château-Thierry prison is a high-security correctional facility where prisoners whose integration into a "standard" prison is complicated because of behavioural problems, reside. We conducted the first study to describe the judicial a

The Rorschach test in clinical diagnosis: a critical review, with a backward look at Garfield (1947).

The present article comments on a classic study by Garfield (1947) then reviews research on the Rorschach and psychiatric diagnoses. Despite a few positive findings, the Rorschach has demonstrated little validity as a diagnostic tool. Deviant verbalizations and bad form on the Rorschach, and indices based on these variables, are related to Schizophrenia and perhaps to Bipolar Disorder and Schizotypal Personality Disorder. Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder also seem to give an above-average number of deviant verbalizations. Otherwise the Rorschach has not shown a well-demonstrated r
