Synergism between ammonia, lactic acid and carboxylic acids as kairomones in the host-seeking behaviour of the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto (Diptera: Culicidae).

Host odours play a major role in the orientation and host location of blood-feeding mosquitoes. Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto, which is the most important malaria vector in Africa, is a highly anthropophilic mosquito species, and the host-seeking behaviour of the females of this mosquito is guided by volatiles of human origin. Ammonia, lactic acid and several carboxylic acids are known to be present in the human odour blend. We investigated the effect of these compounds on naive female mosquitoes using a dual-port olfactometer. Ammonia was an attractant on its own, whereas lactic acid

Chemical and immunological analysis of prey-derived vomeronasal stimulants.

We have isolated seven proteins from earthworm preparations that are chemoattractive to garter snakes. Three of these proteins have been purified to homogeneity: two from aqueous earthworm wash (EWW) and one from electric shock-induced earthworm secretion (ESS). One of the two highly purified proteins from EWW has a relative molecular mass of 20 kDa and contains free sulfhydryl groups that appear to play a functional role in its chemoattractivity. The other purified protein from EWW has a molecular mass of 3 kDa (low molecular weight protein, LMW). The highly purified chemoattractive protein (

Elevated Atmospheric CO2 Modifies Symbiont-Associated Dispersal Behavior Under a Standardized Assay in an Aphid Clone.

Rising atmospheric CO2 levels may alter behavioral dynamics that mediate species interactions, a largely overlooked dimension of ecosystem functioning. Aphids offer a tractable model for examining these modifications, as their primary protection from natural enemies relies on the alarm pheromone (E)-β-farnesene (Eβf). Facultative aphid endosymbionts like Candidatus Hamiltonella defensa complicate this dynamic by modifying parasitoid resistance and associated behaviors, yet their interaction with elevated CO2 remains largely unexplored. Using a single clone of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum

Stand and Landscape Drivers of Trap Captures of the Pine Wilt Disease Vector Monochamus alternatus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in the Qinling Mountains.

Monochamus alternatus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is the principal vector of pine wilt disease, one of the most destructive forest diseases affecting conifer ecosystems in East Asia. However, the relative roles of stand structure and surrounding landscape context in shaping spatial variation in trap captures of this vector in mountainous forests remain poorly understood. The associations of stand- and landscape-level factors with trap captures of M. alternatus were assessed in the Qinling Mountains of central China, a topographically complex region experiencing rapid expansion of pine wilt dise

Ultrastructure of antennal sensory organs in Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae).

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner 1861) is the sole causative agent of vaginal myiasis in Bactrian camels, and its antennal sensilla serve as essential sensory organs for detecting environmental chemical cues. However, no systematic study has been reported on the morphology of antennal sensilla in male and female. Here, we examined and compared the antennal morphology of male and female W. magnifica using scanning electron microscopy. The antennae consist of 3 main segments, the scape, pedicel, and funiculus, with an arista arising from the funiculus. Four sensillum types were identified: chaetic

The Development of an Asymmetric Accessory Olfactory Bulb in Octodon degus and the Influence of Social Behavior in Its Establishment.

The vomeronasal system (VNS) has been extensively associated with the regulation of sexual and social behaviors in mammals. In rodents, this system comprises two types of vomeronasal neurons sending parallel projections from the vomeronasal organ (VNO) to the anterior and posterior portions of the accessory olfactory bulb (aAOB and pAOB, respectively). Caviomorph rodents develop either a larger aAOB bias or a larger pAOB bias, which has been associated with ecological traits related to the pheromonal communication displayed by these species. However, it is still unknown how and when such AOB a

Chemical Signaling and Integrated Strategies for Biological Control in Crop Agroecosystems.

Food security faces significant challenges due to the growing threat of insect pests and global climate change, making it essential to adopt sustainable agricultural strategies. Plants possess intrinsic defense systems that are activated in response to herbivore attack, including the emission of specialized volatile organic compounds (VOC) known as herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs). These volatiles aid the foraging of natural enemies (predators and parasitoids), thereby contributing to biological control of pest populations. Harnessing these chemical defense mechanisms offers a promisi

Genetically Engineered Yeast for Enhanced Biodegradation of Β-lactam Antibiotics.

High environmental concentrations of pharmaceuticals, particularly antibiotics, have been observed worldwide, while antibiotic concentrations in the ng/L to µg/L range may adversely affect biota and contribute to the formation of antibiotic resistance. The underlying causes of high environmental concentrations include, in addition to the low rate of antibiotic' metabolization and the high rate of usage, especially of β-lactam antibiotics, the insufficient removal by conventional wastewater treatment methods. Consequently, alternative methods need to be developed to remove antibiotics from wast

Odorant-Binding and Chemosensory Proteins in Fig Wasps: Evolutionary Insights From Comparative Studies.

Fig wasps (Agaonidae; Hymenoptera) are the only pollinating insects of fig trees (Ficus; Moraceae), forming the most closely and highly specific mutualism with the host. We used transcriptome sequences of 25 fig wasps from six genera to explore the evolution of key molecular components of fig wasp chemosensory genes: odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) and chemosensory proteins (CSPs). We identified a total 321 OBPs and 240 CSPs, with each species recording from 6 to 27 OBP genes and 6-19 CSP genes. 318 OBP genes are clustered into 17 orthologous groups and can be divided into two groups: PBP sens

A conserved GRAS-domain transcriptional regulator links meristem indeterminacy to sex determination in Ceratopteris gametophytes.

Most land plants alternate between generations of sexual gametophytes and asexual sporophytes. Unlike seed plants, fern gametophytes are free living and grow independently of their sporophytes. In homosporous ferns such as Ceratopteris, gametophytes derived from genetically identical spores exhibit sexual dimorphism, developing as either males or hermaphrodites. Males lack meristems and promote cell differentiation into sperm-producing antheridia. In contrast, hermaphrodites initiate multicellular meristems that stay undifferentiated, sustain cell division and prothallus expansion, and drive t

Calumenin, a Ca2+ Binding Protein, Is Required for Dauer Formation in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Caenorhabditis elegans can adapt and survive in dynamically changing environments by the smart and delicate switching of molecular plasticity. C. elegans dauer diapause is a form of phenotypic and developmental plasticity that induces reversible developmental arrest upon environmental cues. An ER (endoplasmic reticulum)-resident Ca2+ binding protein, calumenin has been reported to function in a variety of malignant diseases in vertebrates and in the process of muscle contraction-relaxation. In C. elegans, CALU-1 is known to function in Ca2+-regulated behaviors (pharyngeal pumping and defecatio

'Speed-ageing' of human skin in serum-free organ culture ex vivo: An instructive novel assay for preclinical human skin ageing research demonstrates senolytic effects of caffeine and 2,5-dimethylpyrazine.

Preclinical human skin ageing research has been limited by the paucity of instructive and clinically relevant models. In this pilot study, we report that healthy human skin of different age groups undergoes extremely accelerated ageing within only 3 days, if organ-cultured in a defined serum-free medium. Quantitative (immuno-)histomorphometry documented this unexpected ex vivo phenotype on the basis of ageing-associated biomarkers: the epidermis showed significantly reduced rete ridges and keratinocyte proliferation, sirtuin-1, MTCO1 and collagen 17a1 protein levels; this contrasted with signi

Mouse skin peptidomic analysis of the hemorrhage induced by a snake venom metalloprotease.

Hemorrhage induced by snake venom metalloproteases (SVMPs) results from proteolysis, capillary disruption, and blood extravasation. HF3, a potent SVMP of Bothrops jararaca, induces hemorrhage at pmol doses in the mouse skin. To gain insight into the hemorrhagic process, the main goal of this study was to analyze changes in the skin peptidome generated by injection of HF3, using approaches of mass spectrometry-based untargeted peptidomics. The results revealed that the sets of peptides found in the control and HF3-treated skin samples were distinct and derived from the cleavage of different pro

Steroid hormone pathways coordinate developmental diapause and olfactory remodeling in Pristionchus pacificus.

Developmental and behavioral plasticity allow animals to prioritize alternative genetic programs during fluctuating environments. Behavioral remodeling may be acute in animals that interact with host organisms, since reproductive adults and the developmentally arrested larvae often have different ethological needs for chemical stimuli. To understand the genes that coordinate the development and host-seeking behavior, we used the entomophilic nematode Pristionchus pacificus to characterize dauer-constitutive mutants (Daf-c) that inappropriately enter developmental diapause to become dauer larva

Puberty is a Critical Period for Vomeronasal Organ Mediation of Socio-sexual Behavior in Mice.

Genetic disruption of the vomeronasal organ (VNO), an organ responsible for pheromone processing, drastically alters socio-sexual behavior in mice. However, it is not known whether the VNO has a role during the pubertal organizational period when sex-typical socio-sexual behaviors emerge, or if disruption of the organ in adulthood is sufficient to alter socio-sexual behavior. To bypass the lifelong VNO disruption of genetic knockout models, we surgically ablated the VNO of male and female mice either during the peripubertal period [postnatal day (PND) 28-30] or adulthood (PND 58-60), with sham

Crucial Role of Juvenile Hormone Receptor Components Methoprene-Tolerant and Taiman in Sexual Maturation of Adult Male Desert Locusts.

Currently (2020), Africa and Asia are experiencing the worst desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) plague in decades. Exceptionally high rainfall in different regions caused favorable environmental conditions for very successful reproduction and population growth. To better understand the molecular mechanisms responsible for this remarkable reproductive capacity, as well as to fill existing knowledge gaps regarding the regulation of male reproductive physiology, we investigated the role of methoprene-tolerant (Scg-Met) and Taiman (Scg-Tai), responsible for transducing the juvenile hormone (JH)

Olive Fruit Fly, Bactrocera oleae (Diptera: Tephritidae), Attraction to Volatile Compounds Produced by Host and Insect-Associated Yeast Strains.

The olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi), is one of the most damaging insect pests of olives worldwide, requiring the use of insecticides for fruit protection in many orchards. Olive fruit flies are attracted to volatile composunds, including a female-produced pheromone, and host-plant and bacterial volatiles. Preliminary laboratory bioassays were conducted for olive fruit fly attraction to over 130 yeast strains from among 400 that were isolated from B. oleae adults and larvae or other insects, infested olives, and potential feeding sites. Identification and Expression Profiles of 14 Odorant-Binding Protein Genes From Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae).

The small white butterfly, Pieris rapae (L.), is an important insect pest of Brassica crops. This species utilize olfactory cues to find their hosts and mates. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the olfactory perception in this species remains unclear. Here, we identified 14 odorant-binding proteins (OBP) genes-essential for insect olfaction-in P. rapae by exploring a previously published transcriptome dataset. Proteins encoded by all of these genes contain N-terminal signal peptides and six positionally conserved cysteine residues, which are characteristic of insect OBPs. These OBPs

The tripartite architecture of the eukaryotic integral membrane protein zinc metalloprotease Ste24.

Ste24 enzymes, a family of eukaryotic integral membrane proteins, are zinc metalloproteases (ZMPs) originally characterized as "CAAX proteases" targeting prenylated substrates, including a-factor mating pheromone in yeast and prelamin A in humans. Recently, Ste24 was shown to also cleave nonprenylated substrates. Reduced activity of the human ortholog, HsSte24, is linked to multiple disease states (laminopathies), including progerias and lipid disorders. Ste24 possesses a unique "α-barrel" structure consisting of seven transmembrane (TM) α-helices encircling a large intramembranous cavity (~14

Exploiting whole genome sequence data to fine map and characterize candidate genes within a quantitative trait loci region affecting androstenone on porcine chromosome 5.

Male piglets are routinely castrated to eliminate boar taint. However, this treatment is undesirable, and alternative approaches, including genetic strategies to reduce boar taint, are demanded. Androstenone is one of the causative agents of boar taint, and a QTL region affecting this pheromone has previously been reported on SSC5: 22.6-24.8 Mb in Duroc. The QTL region is one of the few reported for androstenone that does not simultaneously affect levels of other sex steroids. The main objective of this study was to fine map this QTL. Whole genome sequence data from 23 Norwegian Duroc boars we
