BACKGROUND: Untreated and preclinical heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) have an impaired ability to alleviate excess intravascular volume.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate 1) the renal response to intravascular volume expansion in euvolemic and optimally treated HFrEF patients and 2) loop diuretic efficiency.

Acute normavolemic hemodilution is a mean of autotransfusion and allow hepatitis prophylaxis in major surgical procedures which general require homologous blood transfusions. Plasma catecholamines were measured following surgery under anaesthesia and after exposing hagfish to 90 and 110% sea water (SW). Plasma noradrenaline (NA) concentration increased from a resting value of 7 to 818 nM l(-1) on anaesthesia. Plasma adrenaline (AD) did not change.
