We report a case of fatal hydrops fetalis owing to adenoviral endomyocarditis with aortic and pulmonary valve stenosis. A 1850-g macerated male stillborn delivered 1 week after fetal ultrasonography showed hydrops, cardiomegaly, and possible aortic valve stenosis. Autopsy confirmed hydrops and showed thickened, fibrotic semilunar valves with stenosis. The myocardium was focally fibrotic with areas of calcification. A nested PCR (nested flagellin PCR) carrying an internal E. coli DNA control was established and compared with an in-vitro culture method for the detection of Borrelia burgdorferi in urine specimens of dogs. OBJECTIVE: A comparison study of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and culture method were used to detect urogenital ureaplasma urealyticum.
METHODS: Urogenital specimens from 116 patients were assayed in parallel by the two methods.
RESULTS: 46 cases were positive by PCR, 42 cases positive by culture, and UuDNA were dedected in 42 cases of the 45 positive by culture. Compared with culture, the sensitivity and specificity of PCR were 93.3% and 94.4%, respectively. The positive rate of both methods were comparable (P > 0.05).

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) infection in spontaneous abortion patients.
METHODS: CT and UU in aborted tissues were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique in 45 spontaneous abortion patients (abortion group) and 25 artificial abortion cases (control group).
RESULTS: The detective rate of CT and UU was 42.2% and 33.3% respectively in the abortion group. As compared with the control group significant difference (P < 0.01, P < 0.025) was shown. The detection rate of mixed CT and UU is 8.9%.

A nested polymerase chain reaction was utilized to successfully detect the type B botulinum neurotoxin gene of Clostridium botulinum in feces from a 6-month-old patient, who had already been diagnosed with type B infant botulism by mouse bio-assay. This method of rapid diagnosis without enrichment culture of feces can be applied to other types of toxins in the use of the type-specific primers. Further investigations, however, are required to define the sensitivity and specificity of the method.

Following the discovery of four cases of African human trypanosomiasis, an entomological survey was conducted along the Mouhoun river in southwest Burkina Faso to collect Glossina palpalis gambiensis and G.tachinoides.
