Acute mitral valve injury following percutaneous left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion is a rare, but potentially life-threatening complication. This report presents a case of severe mitral valve injury following left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) that required mitral valve replacement. The LAAO device successfully was removed, and the LAA was closed with a double-running polypropylene suture. In addition, the mitral valve was replaced with an artificial valve. The patient had an uneventful clinical evolution and was discharged 10 days after emergency surgery.

We present a case of intractable dysphagia in a 23-year-old female with type 1 esophageal atresia (EA) and subsequent postsurgical refractory esophageal strictures. The patient was referred due to increasing symptomatology and a slight response to balloon dilations. A biodegradable polydioxanone stent (ELLA) was placed, but this did not relieve the dysphagia. Cleaning reusable medical devices removes organic and inorganic soil, which allows for effective disinfection and sterilization. However, it is not always clear what variables to consider when validating cleaning. This study compared the ability of 3 different cleaning agents (ie, water, alcohol, and bleach) to remove bacteria (ie, vegetative and spores) and artificial blood test soil from 2 common device materials: polypropylene and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. There was a complex interaction between bacteria, soil, and surface roughness.

A technique is described in which a posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted in eyes with partial loss of posterior capsule or zonular support. The IOL's inferior haptic is placed over the residual capsule and the superior haptic is fixated to the ciliary sulcus with a polypropylene suture. In 17 eyes that had surgery using this technique, mean postoperative visual acuity was 20/25; complications included irregular pupil, iris capture, pupil block, hyphema, localized peripheral anterior synechia, IOL tilt, suture exposure, and cystoid macular edema.
