During 1996 to 1998, an average of 52% to 55% of the raccoon (Procyon lotor) population on Wolfe Island, Ontario was vaccinated against rabies during proactive trap-vaccinate-release (TVR) operations. However, during 1999, the percent of the population vaccinated declined to 39% and an outbreak (6 cases) of raccoon rabies occurred on the island from December 1999 to January 2000. The raccoon population on Wolfe Island declined dramatically (71% reduction) from 1,067 raccoons (mean density = 8.4/km(2) [6.4-12.4, 95% CI]) during 1999 to 305 raccoons (mean density = 2.4/km(2) [0.87-4.1, 95% CI])

Coyotes (Canis latrans) have colonized northeastern North America only within the past 10-80 yr. We examined feces of coyotes in 2000-01 at three sites in New York (USA) to survey parasites in the region. Two cestodes, nine nematodes, five protozoa, one trematode, and two arthropods were identified from 145 coyote fecal samples. Parasite component community diversity was higher (n = 16 species) in southern New York than in middle and northern sites (nine species each) and infracommunity species richness was greater in southern New York than at the other sites. These differences may reflect the

In Burkina Faso, the Mouhoun river basin (formerly "Black Volta") constitutes a historical focus of Human (HAT) and Animal (AAT) African Trypanosomoses, both transmitted by tsetse flies. Nowadays, HAT seems to have disappeared from this area, while AAT still causes severe economic losses. In order to explain these different epidemiological situations, we undertook a geographical study based on the analysis of aerial pictures between 1952 and 2007, and field surveys to collect medical, entomological, and veterinary data on trypanosomoses. Our results suggest that in this area, landscapes have b

Chronically male-biased sex ratios are predicted to intensify sexual conflict and reduce female fitness. Yet empirical tests of female responses in natural settings are rare. We tested how female reproductive performance depends on social environment in the field using two closely related sympatric damselflies that differ strikingly in adult sex ratios: one experiences consistently male-biased sex ratios (Enallagma exsulans), whereas the other does not (E. traviatum). In field experiments, females from the chronically male-biased species were less sensitive to elevated male density, maintainin

BACKGROUND: Tibial plateau fractures are frequently observed in elderly patients, often resulting from low-energy trauma. The treatment of tibial plateau fractures in this population is further complicated by factors such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and other medical comorbidities.
OBJECTIVE: This article provides a comprehensive review of the different treatment strategies for proximal tibial fractures in the elderly. A variety of internal and external fixation techniques, medical management as well as acute arthroplasty, are discussed as potential approaches for achieving optimal recon

The high-altitude regions of the Tibet Autonomous Region possess abundant cold-water resources, with annual average water temperatures suitable for culturing triploid rainbow trout. However, environmental challenges-including low atmospheric pressure, hypoxic water conditions, and significant diurnal temperature fluctuations-necessitate precise optimization of stocking density. Inadequate densities result in suboptimal resource utilization, whereas excessive densities induce chronic stress, leading to suppressed growth, reduced survival, and intestinal microbiota dysbiosis. Currently, research

INTRODUCTION: Aedes aegypti is a vector of arboviral pathogens that cause hundreds of millions of cases of dengue fever, yellow fever, Zika, and Chikungunya annually, and is widespread globally. Although these mosquitoes commonly inhabit tropical and subtropical areas at low altitudes, recent studies found them up to 2,500 meters above sea levels (masl).
OBJECTIVE: To identify the presence of the Ae. aegypti mosquito in urban areas with altitudes around 2,900 masl in Sucre, Bolivia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted, capturing mosquito larvae between M

Bean beetle (Callosobruchus maculatus) exhibits clear phenotypic plasticity depending on population density; However, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unknown. Compared to low-density individuals, high-density individuals showed a faster terminal oocyte maturity rate. Four insulin-like peptide (ILP) genes were identified in the bean beetle, which had higher expression levels in the head than in the thorax and abdomen. The population density could regulate the expression levels of CmILP1-3, CmILP2-3, and CmILP1 as well as CmILP3 in the head, thorax, and abdomen, respectively. RNA inte…

Oceans are increasingly crowded by anthropogenic activities yet the impact on Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) marine life remains largely unquantified. The MAPS (Marine Mammal Acoustic and Spatial Ecology) study of 2019 included passive acoustic and visual vessel surveys over the Mid-Atlantic OCS of the USA to address data gaps in winter/spring for deep-diving cetaceans, including sperm whales. Echolocation clicks were used to derive slant ranges to sperm whales for design- and model-based density estimates. Although more survey effort was realised in the spring, high densities of whales were id

BACKGROUND: Male-to-male sexual transmission continues to account for the greatest proportion of new HIV diagnoses in the United States. However, calculating population-specific surveillance metrics for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections requires regularly updated estimates of the number and proportion of men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States, which are not collected by census surveys.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this analysis was to estimate the number and percentage of MSM in the United States from population-based surveys.
METHODS: We used data from 5 population-ba

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever poses a significant global public health concern, necessitating the monitoring of Aedes mosquito population density. These mosquitoes serve as the disease vectors, making their surveillance crucial for dengue prevention. The objective of this study was to address the difficulty associated with identifying and counting mosquito eggs of wild strains during the monitoring of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) density via ovitraps in field surveys.
METHODS: We constructed a dataset comprising 1729 images of Ae. albopictus mosquito eggs from wild strains and employed th…

Mosquito-borne diseases pose a significant public health threat, prompting the need to pinpoint high-risk areas for targeted interventions and environmental control measures. Culex quinquefasciatus is the primary vector for several mosquito-borne pathogens, including West Nile virus. Using spatial analysis and modeling techniques, we investigated the geospatial distribution of Culex quinquefasciatus abundance in the large metropolis of Harris County, Texas, from 2020 to 2022. Our geospatial analysis revealed clusters of high mosquito abundance, predominantly located in central Houston and the

BACKGROUND: Knowing the number of persons at risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their risk behaviors are needed to allocate limited resources, set targets for prevention and care activities, gauge the reach of programs, and assess their impact. Female sex workers (FSWs) are a population at high risk for STD worldwide; little is known about FSW in Bhutan.
METHODS: We conducted a community-based survey and population size exercise of FSW in Bhutan. The survey used a hybrid venue-based/peer-referral sampling method. Population size estimation methods were key informant mapping, ce

As tick-borne disease incidence increases and pathogens expand into new areas, the need for effective tick management strategies is paramount. In this 5-yr study (2014-2018) conducted in south central Wisconsin, we assessed whether an integrated tick management approach, deployed during peak tick activity (May-August), was more effective at reducing black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis Say (Ixodida: Ixodidae)), than individual interventions. Using a factorial design, invasive vegetation removal (Amur honeysuckle, Lonicera maackii Ruprecht (Dipsacales: Caprifoliaceae) and common buckthorn, Rha

Safe obstetric care is a worldwide requirement. In Japan, a reduced number of obstetricians has prompted the centralization of obstetric facilities, and Japan's islands are expected to experience problems in handling deliveries. Although many pregnant women "move" to the mainland at later gestational weeks, "transport" from the island to the mainland may be occasionally needed when disorders manifest before the "move." Other women plan within-island deliveries; however, transport is required when complications arise. Managing delivery- or pregnancy-related problems may differ in transport by t

Plague is a low incidence flea-borne zoonosis that is often fatal if treatment is delayed or inadequate. Outbreaks occur sporadically and human cases are often preceded by epizootics among rodents. Early recognition of epizootics coupled with appropriate prevention measures should reduce plague morbidity and mortality. For nearly a century, the flea index (a measure of fleas per host) has been used as a measure of risk for epizootic spread and human plague case occurrence, yet the practicality and effectiveness of its use in surveillance programs has not been evaluated rigorously. We sought to
