Examining rurality and social determinants of health among women with GDM: a 15-year comprehensive population analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy complication with long-term health consequences for mothers and their children. The escalating trends of GDM coupled with the growing prevalence of maternal obesity, a significant GDM risk factor projected to approach nearly 60% by 2030 in Kansas, has emerged as a pressing public health issue. METHODS: The aim of this study was to compare GDM and maternal obesity trends in rural and urban areas and investigate maternal demographic characteristics influencing the risk of GDM development over a 15-year period. Trend analyses

Rural and urban differences in disparities in substance use and substance use disorders affecting sexual minority populations.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority populations are at elevated risk for substance use (SU) and substance use disorders (SUD) compared to heterosexual populations. These disparities are theorized to be amplified for rural sexual minority populations due to their increased exposure to minority stress and reduced access to sexual minority communities. However, there is a lack of research examining differences in SU disparities affecting sexual minority populations by urbanicity, and little research has examined differences in SUD treatment utilization by sexual minority status or urbanicity. METHODS: W

Recommendations for the screening of paediatric latent tuberculosis infection in indigenous communities: a systematic review of screening strategies among high-risk groups in low-incidence countries.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a global public health concern. Due to the presence of multiple risk factors such as poor housing conditions and food insecurity in Canadian Indigenous communities, this population is at particularly high risk of TB infection. Given the challenges of screening for latent TB infection (LTBI) in remote communities, a synthesis of the existing literature regarding current screening strategies among high-risk groups in low-incidence countries is warranted, in order to provide an evidence base for the optimization of paediatric LTBI screening practices

Distribution of HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 alleles in Lak population of Iran.

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes are the most polymorphic loci in the human genome and encode the highly polymorphic molecules critically involved in immune responses. Anthropological studies based on highly polymorphic HLA genes provide useful information for bone marrow donor registry, forensic medicine, disease association studies, as well as designing peptide vaccines against tumors, and infectious or autoimmune diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 allele frequencies in 100 unrelated Lak individuals from Lorestan province of Iran. Finally, we compar

[The epidemiological aspects of Lyme borreliosis in Sverdlovsk Province].

Lyme borreliosis in the Sverdlovsk region was epidemiologically analysed on the basis of the patients' referral to the Center of Lyme Borreliosis. From 1991 to 1993 a total of 873 cases of specified Lyme borreliosis were recorded. The main epidemiological characteristics of Lyme borreliosis coincided with those of tick-borne viral encephalitis. The endemic areas virtually covered all the districts of the region with the foci concentrated around large cities in the south and south-west of the region. The risk of Lyme borreliosis was found to increase with the patient's age and the duration of t

[Genetic analysis of the gastric precancer-cancer system. I. Research in different populations].

Heredity predisposition was analysed in cancer and precancer stomach diseases in distinct populations. Some phenotypic and genetic characters of the stomach "precancer--cancer" system were studied. Similarity in the degree of stomach cancer inheritance, its segregation frequency and recurrent risk was revealed for populations. However, the degree of correlation between cancer and precancer stomach disease was different in distinct populations, this being more pronounced in "cancer--gastric ulcer" system.

[Studies of the ecology of some blood protozoa of wild small mammals in North Germany (author's transl)].

In 1977 and 1978, 696 small mammals of 9 different species were surveyed for protozoal blood parasites. The following parasites were found: Hepatozoon sylvatici in Apodemus flavicollis, H. erhardovae and Trypanosoma evotomys in Clethrionomys glareolus, T. microti and Babesia microti in Microtus agrestis and T. croicidurae in Crocidura russula. H. erhardovae showed regularly high infection-rates (more than 70%) during all the years in 1977 and 1978. H. sylvatici was found only in 5.6% of the yellow-necked mice from March to October. T. microti and T. evotomys were predominately found in the tim

The impact of ethnic self-identity on post-migration social integration of young rural to urban migrants in China: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Post-migration social integration is a pressing concern for young ethnic-minority migrants in urban China. This study examines how ethnic self-identity shapes this integration process from the migrant's own lived perspectives. Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, we regard young migrants as subjects of meaning-making rather than objects to be measured. Ecological systems theory, social identity theory, and social cognitive models provide the analytical frameworks for understanding how ethnic identity is negotiated within destination-city contexts. METHODS: We conduct

Examining perceptions of rapid population growth in North and South Gondar zones, northwest Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is one of the most populous countries in Africa and ranks second only to Nigeria. Rapid population growth has hampered the country's development, making the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger difficult. This study which had two components--quantitative and qualitative--was aimed at exploring the perceptions of women and other social groups on the prevailing population pressures. The quantitative study involved 3,512 women aged 15-49 years. The qualitative study consisted of five focus-group discussions and six key-informant interviews. Over 90% of women (n = 3,512) who particip

Social, environmental and policy contexts affecting the feasibility and acceptability of improving household flooring for better health in rural Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Homes with unimproved floors (earth, sand, or clay) are associated with increased risks of soil-transmitted parasites and enteric infections, leading to higher morbidity and reduced quality of life. This study explored the enablers and barriers to adopting improved flooring (sealed, washable, and durable) in three culturally diverse regions of Kenya - Narok, Bungoma, and Kwale - to mitigate disease burdens. METHODS: Between August 2021 and July 2022, we conducted 24 focus group discussions with homeowners, stratified by age, gender, and floor type. Additionally, 28 key informant i

'I imagine teams!' - exploring the potential of team-based long-term brain injury rehabilitation in North Norway.

BACKGROUND: Acquired brain injury (ABI) is a leading cause of disability in adults worldwide, often resulting in long-term impairments that hinder community integration. While advancements in acute care have improved ABI survival rates, significant gaps remain in long-term follow-up. These gaps are exacerbated in rural areas, where dispersed populations, long distances, and limited access to rehabilitation professionals pose challenges. Although team-based approaches are crucial for effective ABI rehabilitation, these approaches have yet to be fully integrated into long-term care, thus highlig
