Patients with tetralogy of Fallot, pulmonary atresia, and multiple aortopulmonary collateral arteries (Tet PA MAPCAs) have a wide spectrum of anatomy and disease severity. Management of these patients can be challenging and often require multiple high-risk surgical and interventional catheterization procedures. These interventions are made challenging by complex anatomy that require the proceduralist to mentally reconstruct three-dimensional anatomic relationships from two-dimensional images. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an emerging medical technology that provides added benefits in the

Congenital microtia manifests abnormalities in the external ear leading to potential adverse impacts on psychosocial health and hearing impairment. Three-dimensional (3D) technologies have demonstrated potential applications for personalised prosthesis fabrication; however, the large hardware costs limit their routine clinical use. Frugal 3D scan-model-print pipelines can disrupt traditional processes and increase accessibility. In this study, we aimed to further validate 3D photogrammetry using 3 different smartphone models. Both ears of 10 participants were scanned with 4 devices: Samsung Ga

INTRODUCTION: Forearm fractures contribute up to 40% of all pediatric fractures, with ≤39% of conservatively managed fractures resulting in malunion. Surgical management of malunion is challenging as precise calculation of multiplanar correction is required to obtain optimal outcomes. Advances in 3D computer modeling and printing have shown promising results in orthopaedics, reducing surgical time, blood loss, and fluoroscopy. This systematic review and meta-analysis are the first to explore the accuracy and functional outcome of 3D techniques in pediatric diaphyseal forearm malunion correctio

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) virtual surgical planning technology has advanced applications in the correction of deformities of long bones by enabling the production of 3D stereolithographic models, patient-specific instruments and surgical-guiding templates. Herein, we describe the implementation of this technology in young patients who required a corrective osteotomy for a complex 3-plane (oblique plane) lower-limb deformity.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 17 patients (9 males, average age 14.7 y) participated in this retrospective study. As part of preoperative planning, the patien

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of a brain tumor is important for improving the treatment possibilities. Manually segmenting the tumor from the volumetric data is time-consuming, and the visualization of the tumor is rather challenging.
METHODS: This paper proposes a user-guided brain tumour segmentation from MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) images developed using Medical Imaging Interaction Toolkit (MITK) and printing the segmented object using the 3D printer for tumour quantification. The proposed method includes segmenting the tumour interactively using connected threshold method, then printin

The incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD) has been steadily increasing globally, while traditional two-dimensional cell cultures and animal models face significant challenges in effectively elucidating its complex pathological mechanisms and screening potential drugs. Advancedin vitromodels that incorporate patient-specific characteristics and three-dimensional (3D) microenvironments have emerged as powerful alternatives. This review first outlines current perspectives on PD etiology and pathogenesis, highlighting their implications for 3D modeling systems. A systematic comparison evaluates or

Breast cancer (BC) is a widely recognized second most frequent female cancer globally that is histologically and molecularly heterogeneous. Nevertheless, despite intensive studies, currently available preclinical models, particularly animal models, are of limited use for clinical applications, and thus, anticancer drug failure in clinical trials is relatively high. This gap indicates the necessity for more physiologically relevant models. Conventional two-dimensional (2D) culture models are incapable of accurately simulating the complex tumor microenvironment. However, three-dimensional (3D) c

BACKGROUND: 3D image processing and reconstruction (3D-IPR) is increasingly used in surgical applications for enhanced planning and intraoperative visualization. 3D-printed models, created from 3D-IPR, have the potential to improve understanding of anatomical structures and simulate surgical procedures. However, evidence supporting their educational benefits, particularly for complex perianal Crohn's disease (pCD) fistulas, remains limited.
METHODS: This study assessed the role of 3D-printed models as teaching tools for general surgery and gastroenterology trainees/attendants. Two courses wer

PURPOSE: Age-matched average 3D models facilitate both surgical planning and intraoperative guidance of cranial birth defects such as craniosynostosis. We aimed to develop an algorithm that accepts any number of CT scans as input and generates highly accurate, average models with minimal user input that are ready for 3D printing and clinical use.
METHODS: Using a compiled database of 'normal' pediatric computed tomography (CT) scans, we report Normscan, an open-source platform built in Python that allows users to generate normative models of CT scans through user-defined landmarks. We use the

INTRODUCTION: Long bone fracture is common in traumatic osteopathic patients. Good reduction is beneficial for bone healing, preventing the complications such as delayed union, nonunion, malunion, but is hard to achieve. Repeated attempts during the surgery would increase the operation time, cause new damage to the fracture site and excessive exposure to radiation. Robotic and navigation techniques can help improve the reduction accuracy, however, the high cost and complexity of operation have limited their clinical application.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We combined 3D printing with computer-ass
