Graft infections can be seen after the peripheric vascular operations using synthetic graft. The patient who had femoro-femoral bypass with synthetic graft after a gunshot wound admitted to our department with graft infection and wide tissue loss. The distal pedal pulses were palpable. At the fifth day, the patient had a bleeding on the graft site and underwent emergency operation. Firstly the infected graft material was excised. Then the proximal end of the PTFE graft anastomosed to the external iliac artery with the lomber incision. A tunnel was formed just medial to the superior crista ilia

Infection with Listeria monocytogenes is rare and has been described in prosthetic valves, stent grafts and prosthetic joints. The route of infection appears to be haematogenous. The choice between conservative treatment with antibiotics or surgical treatment with debridement and revision of the components remains controversial. The best antibiotic treatment is not known with ampicillin being the first choice in most cases. Prosthetic infections with Listeria monocytogenes usually occur in patients with malignancy, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal disease, liver disease, elderly patients and p

Infrainguinal angioplasty and stenting is becoming a more commonly performed procedure. Its durability remains a matter of debate, however. Aneurysmal degeneration following angioplasty and stenting is a complication not previously described in the literature with regard to the superficial femoral artery. We present a case in which two aneurysms of the superficial femoral artery developed following angioplasty and multiple-stent placements in a patient who had previously undergone a failed femoral-to-below-the-knee popliteal artery PTFE bypass graft. The patient presented to our institution wi

From October 1988 to March 1995, we operated 22 patients for fistulization between the prosthesis and the digestive tract to remove the in situ allograft. The delay between the initial operation and treatment for fistulization was 7.3 +/- 4 years. In these patients who had undergone multiple operations (2.5 +/- 1.9 operations per patient), the infected prosthesis was made of Dacron in 21 cases and polytetrafluoroethylene in one. The procedure was planned beforehand in 21 cases who benefited from a complete preoperative work-up and was required in an emergency situation in 6 for digestive bleed

Secondary aortoenteric fistula is a rare complication, although very severe, of aortic revascularization surgery. The major cause is usually infection of the prosthetic material, which may happen short or long after the intervention. The most frequent forms of presentation are digestive hemorrhage, abdominal pain or unpleasantness, shock or other symptoms associated to the compression of adjacent structures. However, as in the present case, symptoms of systemic infection may be the only manifestation, with absence of local signs. This is why a high degree of clinical suspicion is needed. The m

This cooperative study recensed 148 patients who had infective endocarditis (IE) with anatomopathological correlations. The infection was on native valves in 89 cases and prosthetic valves in 59 cases. Transoesophageal echocardiography diagnosed vegetations on native valves with a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive and negative predictive values of 89%, 87%, 88% and 90% respectively, whereas for transthoracic echocardiography the results were 68%, 83%, 81% and 72% respectively. With respect to prosthetic valve vegetations, transoesophageal echocardiography had a sensitivity, specifi

Fungal infections have only rarely been reported to occur in patients having undergone total knee arthroplasty. This case report documents the first known case of Aspergillus fumigatus as the offending organism. Its initial presentation as a popliteal cyst further reinforces the known association of popliteal cysts and intra-articular knee pathology.

Biomaterial-associated infections (BAIs) pose significant challenges in modern medical technologies, being a major postoperative complication and leading cause of implant failure. These infections significantly risk patient health, resulting in prolonged hospitalization, increased morbidity and mortality rates, and elevated treatment expenses. This comprehensive review examines the mechanisms driving bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on biomaterial surfaces, offering an in-depth analysis of current antimicrobial strategies for preventing BAIs. We explore antimicrobial-eluting biomateria

Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is a surgical procedure, in which parts of damaged joints are removed and replaced with a prosthesis. The main indication of TJA is osteoarthritis, and the volume of TJA is rising annually along with the increase of aged population. Hip and knee are the most common joints, in which TJAs are performed. The TJA prosthesis is composed of metal, plastic, or ceramic device. Even though TJA is the most successful treatment for end-stage osteoarthritis, it is associated with various complications, and periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is the most serious complication

Biofilm research has grown exponentially over the last decades, arguably due to their contribution to hospital acquired infections when they form on foreign body surfaces such as catheters and implants. Yet, translation of the knowledge acquired in the laboratory to the clinic has been slow and/or often it is not attempted by research teams to walk the talk of what is defined as 'bench to bedside'. We therefore reviewed the biofilm literature to better understand this gap. Our search revealed substantial development with respect to adapting surfaces and media used in models to mimic the clinic

Cochlear implants (CIs) are associated with a range of infections. These infections present unique considerations because of their position relative to the respiratory tract and the central nervous system, as well as the propensity for biofilms to form on CIs. This article reviews infections related to CIs, including otitis media, mastoiditis, meningitis, and deep CI infection. High-quality evidence on the prevention and management of CI infections is lacking; however, best practices regarding prevention and management are provided.

The number of total joint arthroplasties performed in the United States is increasing every year. Owing to the aging population and excellent long-term prosthesis survival, 45% of patients who undergo joint arthroplasty will receive two or more joint arthroplasties during their lifetimes. Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is among the most common complications after arthroplasty. Evaluation and treatment of PJI in patients with multiple joint arthroplasties is challenging, and no consensus exists for the optimal management. Multiple PJI can occur simultaneously, synchronous, or separated by

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of gout is increasing along with the number of total knee arthroplasties (TKA) performed annually. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of gout following TKA in patients who had a previous history of gout and to determine if it is associated with an increased rate of postoperative joint complications.
METHODS: Patients who did and did not have a preoperative diagnosis of gout and underwent a primary TKA were identified from a national database. The gout patients were matched 1:1 to patients who did not have gout and rates of postoperative gout dia

Gram-negative periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) has been poorly studied despite its rapidly increasing incidence. Treatment with one-stage revision using intra-articular (IA) infusion of antibiotics may offer a reasonable alternative with a distinct advantage of providing a means of delivering the drug in high concentrations. Carbapenems are regarded as the last line of defense against severe Gram-negative or polymicrobial infection. This study presents the results of one-stage revision using intra-articular carbapenem infusion for treating Gram-negative PJI, and analyzes the characteristic

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cardiovascular infections are serious disease associated with high morbidity and mortality. Their diagnosis is challenging, requiring a proper management for a prompt recognition of the clinical manifestations, and a multidisciplinary approach involving cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, infectious diseases specialist, imagers, and microbiologists. Imaging plays a central role in the diagnostic workout, including molecular imaging techniques. In this setting, two different strategies might be used to image infections: the first is based on the use of agents targeting th
