Visual feature binding in early infancy.

How does the developing brain of the human infant solve the feature-binding problem when visual stimuli consisting of multiple colored objects are presented? A habituation--dishabituation procedure revealed that 1-month-old infants have the ability to discriminate changes in the conjunction of a familiar shape and color in two objects. However, this good earlier performance was followed by poorer performance at 2 months of age. The performance improved again at 3 months of age. Detailed analysis of the oculomotor behaviors revealed that the age of 2 months was a period of drastic transition wh

Vestibular tactile and pain thresholds in women with vulvar vestibulitis syndrome.

Vulvar vestibulitis syndrome (VVS) is a common cause of dyspareunia in pre-menopausal women. Little is known about sensory function in the vulvar vestibule, despite Kinsey's assertion that it is important for sexual sensation. We examined punctate tactile and pain thresholds to modified von Frey filaments in the genital region of women with VVS and age- and contraceptive-matched pain-free controls. Women with VVS had lower tactile and pain thresholds around the vulvar vestibule and on the labium minus than controls, and these results were reliable over time. Women with VVS also had lower tacti

Odorant quality perception: a metric individual differences approach.

Perceptual spaces, in which similar stimuli are located close to each other and dissimilar stimuli are located far apart, have aided in the understanding of the physiological and psychological bases for sensory quality coding. Differences in perception between individuals should be reflected by differences in the spatial relationships between stimuli. If the dimensionality of the perceptual space is small (e.g., color space), individual differences that reflect specific pathologies are readily apparent from visual inspection. On the other hand, if the dimensionality of the perceptual space is

The orientation discrimination deficit in strabismic amblyopia depends upon stimulus bandwidth.

We show that the previously reported orientation deficit in amblyopia (Skottun, B. C., Bradley, A., & Freeman, R. D. (1986). Orientation discrimination in amblyopia. Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, 30, 532-537) also occurs for arrays of randomly positioned Gabor micropatterns for which explanations based on either neural disarray or local neural interactions would not hold. Furthermore, when using Gabors, we show that the deficit varies with the spatial frequency and orientational bandwidth of the stimuli used to measure it. We discuss two competing explanations for this, one b

Prism adaptation to dynamic events.

In the present study, we explored adaptation to prism-displaced dynamic and static events under conditions of minimal information. Many of our interactions with the world are dynamic and involve reaching for or intercepting moving objects. The consequences (or feedback) of those interactions entail the presence or absence of physical contact with the moving objects. In this study, humans learned, with only heptic feedback, to intercept optically displaced falling balls. To eliminate visual feedback, the falling balls disappeared behind an occluder (which systematically varied in size across gr

Visual interactions in the path of apparent motion.

When two stationary visual objects appear in alternating sequence, they evoke the perception of a single object moving back and forth between them. This is known as stroboscopic or apparent motion and forms the basis of perceived continuity in, for example, motion pictures. When the spatiotemporal separation between the inducing objects is optimal, the subjective appearance of apparent motion is nearly indistinguishable from that of real motion. Here we report that the detection and identification of a simple visual form in the path of apparent motion is impaired by the illusory perception of

Prior binocular dissociation reduces monocular form deprivation amblyopia in monkeys.

The profound visual deficits associated with early monocular form deprivation (MD) are caused largely by competitive binocular interactions in the visual cortex. We tested the hypothesis that disrupting normal cortical binocularity prior to the onset of MD would reduce the degree of form deprivation amblyopia compared to that produced in animals that had normal binocular vision prior to MD. An optical strabismus was maintained in two rhesus monkeys between 30 and 90 d old, a rearing strategy that substantially reduces excitatory cortical binocular interactions. Subsequently, the lids of one ey

Directional sensitivity along the upper limb in humans.

The capacity of four neurologically healthy young adults to distinguish opposing directions of cutaneous motion was determined at five different sites along the proximal-distal axis of the upper limb. Constant-velocity brushing stimuli (ranging from 0.5 to 32.0 cm/sec) were delivered through an aperture in a Teflon plate that was securely positioned in light contact with the skin. In one series of experiments, directional sensitivity in d' units was assessed at each site, using an aperture length of 0.75 cm. In a second series of experiments, the aperture length required to obtain the same cri

Supraliminal contrast sensitivity functions in recovered optic neuritis.

The supraliminal contrast sensitivity functions in patients with recovered optic neuritis were classified into three function types: 1) type with a decrease in sensitivity in the high and an increase in the low spatial frequency region, 2) type with flat shape as found in normal subjects, and 3) type with a decrease in the low and an increase in the high frequency region. These abnormal functions may be explained by an inhibitory interaction between two parallel channels of high and low frequency, which may have a dependence on the most central and the paracentral region in the visual fields,

Supra-normal skills in processing of visuo-auditory prosodic information by cochlear-implanted deaf patients.

Cochlear implanted (CI) adults with acquired deafness are known to depend on multisensory integration skills (MSI) for speech comprehension through the fusion of speech reading skills and their deficient auditory perception. But, little is known on how CI patients perceive prosodic information relating to speech content. Our study aimed to identify how CI patients use MSI between visual and auditory information to process paralinguistic prosodic information of multimodal speech and the visual strategies employed. A psychophysics assessment was developed, in which CI patients and hearing contro…

Motor Prediction Reduces Beta-Band Power and Enhances Cerebellar-Somatosensory Connectivity before Self-Touch to Enable Its Attenuation.

Motor control theories suggest that the brain uses forward models to predict self-generated tactile input during voluntary movements, thereb … te. A psychophysics task mirrored the pattern of neural attenuation, as the perception of self-touch was attenuated compared with the two control conditions. Minimal requirements for a meaningful workup in patients with smell and taste disorders - A practical guideline based on expert opinion.

Background Despite the high prevalence of smell disorders, there are only a few centres specialising in the evaluation and treatment of patients with smell and taste disorders. While the comprehensive evaluation at centres requires considerable coordination, basic management techniques can be implemented with minimal effort. Summary This manuscript provides guidance on implementing these steps to provide a meaningful workup in patients with smell and taste disorders. Patients can be evaluated using a stepwise process to assess self-reported smell function. Key messages The impact of olfactory

Genetic Hearing Loss Affects Cochlear Processing.

The relationship between speech recognition and hereditary hearing loss is not straightforward. Underlying genetic defects might determine an impaired cochlear processing of sound. We obtained data from nine groups of patients with a specific type of genetic hearing loss. For each group, the affected cochlear site-of-lesion was determined based on previously published animal studies. Retrospectively obtained speech recognition scores in noise were related to several aspects of supra-threshold cochlear processing as assessed by psychophysical measurements. The differences in speech perception i

A machine learning framework to optimize optic nerve electrical stimulation for vision restoration.

Optic nerve electrical stimulation is a promising technique to restore vision in blind subjects. Machine learning methods can be used to select effective stimulation protocols, but they require a model of the stimulated system to generate enough training data. Here, we use a convolutional neural network (CNN) as a model of the ventral visual stream. A genetic algorithm drives the activation of the units in a layer of the CNN representing a cortical region toward a desired pattern, by refining the activation imposed at a layer representing the optic nerve. To simulate the pattern of activation

An Exploration of the Emotive Experiences and the Representations of Female Care Providers Working in a Perinatal Hospice. A Pilot Qualitative Study.

Congenital anomalies are the principal cause of neonatal mortality in the United States. Families who decide to continue gestation and reject termination of pregnancy benefit from the experience of Perinatal Hospice (PH). There are no current studies that show if there may be positive outcomes for care-providers as well. The first step is exploration of their emotive experiences and representations beyond burnout or stress disorders and the possible negative outcomes. With this aim, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 specialists. An Elementary Context analysis was performed with

Nasal airflow engages central olfactory processing and shapes olfactory percepts.

Binding of airborne odour molecules to olfactory receptors at the top of the nasal cavity gives rise to our rich olfactory experience. Whether airflow plays a role in human olfactory perception beyond the transportation of odorants is scantly known. Combining psychophysical measures with strict controls of nasal flow parameters, we demonstrate in four experiments that the perceived intensity of a unilaterally presented odour decreases systematically with the amount of contralateral nasal airflow, in manners that are independent of odour flow rate, nasal pressure, perceived sniff vigour or atte
