Practice of opportunistic breast cancer screening and health education among healthcare workers in public health facilities in Ogun state, Southwest Nigeria: a qualitative study of barriers and facilitators.

BACKGROUND: Globally, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Nigeria has the highest age-standardized breast cancer mortality rates in Africa, at 25.5 per 100,000. In the absence of organised breast cancer screening, opportunistic screening and health education during maternal health visits provide a crucial avenue for early detection and awareness. This study assessed the practices, barriers and facilitators of opportunistic breast cancer screening and health education among health workers in public health facilities in Ogun State, Nigeria. METHODS: This qualitative study utili

Adolescent Menstrual Health Equity.

Menstrual poverty (ie, the systemic lack of access to menstrual hygiene products, education, and sanitation) represents a profound barrier to health equity. This article examines the physical, psychological, and socioeconomic toll of period poverty, with a particular focus on adolescent, as well as transgender and gender-diverse, populations who face unique structural vulnerabilities. While state-level legislation expanding product access in public schools has proliferated, critical implementation deficits remain regarding comprehensive education and physical infrastructure. At the local level

Operationalizing the 2024 International Health Regulation (IHR) Amendments for Disaster and Emergency Health; a Letter to the Editor.

The 2024 IHR amendments offer a practical roadmap for disaster and emergency health, translating clearer international alert triggers into faster local surge activation and embedding fairness into the allocation of vaccines, oxygen, and supplies for those most at risk. Strengthened national focal points and standardized data flows help bridge the stubborn gap between public health surveillance and frontline prehospital care, so Emergency Medical Teams can deploy with fewer delays. Digital tools like AI-driven forecasting can sharpen surge planning, but only when anchored in transparent, human-

Increased leptospirosis incidence following flooding in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

This study investigates the impact of flood events on leptospirosis incidence and mortality in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The study compared monthly data from 2007 to April 2024 (before flood) with data from 67 days following the flood event in May 2024. Data indicate significant fluctuations in confirmed cases and deaths across the years, with a notable increase in leptospirosis cases and mortality rates following the 2024 flood events. These findings suggest that floods potentiate the spread of leptospirosis due to contaminated water sources. The most affected demographic was the 20-59

Introducing Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine in South Asia: Lessons From the Surveillance for Enteric Fever in Asia Project.

Enteric fever remains a public health concern in communities lacking sanitation infrastructure to separate sewage from drinking water. To bridge the gap until large-scale civil-engineering projects are implemented in high-burden countries, typhoid conjugate vaccine presents a promising disease-prevention technology. A new typhoid conjugate vaccine was prequalified by the World Health Organization in 2017 and is beginning to be introduced in countries around the world. To help inform vaccine introduction, the Surveillance for Enteric Fever in Asia Project (SEAP) conducts prospective enteric fev

Policies, resource allocation, and interventions for child and adolescent mental health in low- and middle-income countries in the Western Pacific Region: a scoping review.

Child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) has become an increasingly important public health issue worldwide and particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the Western Pacific Region (WPR), where access to quality mental health care remains limited. The existing evidence on CAMH in the region is fragmented and insufficient for guiding further development and improvements in CAMH services. Against this background, we conducted a scoping review to provide the most recent evidence of the resources (legal, financial, human, infrastructural) allocated to CAMH and the effectiveness

Cholera Crisis in Somalia: A Call for Comprehensive and Sustained Global Intervention.

Somalia is experiencing a recurrent cholera crisis, with over 18,300 cases and 46 deaths reported in 2023, and a further surge in 2024. The epidemic is primarily driven by poor sanitation, political instability, and climate-induced droughts, with vulnerable populations, particularly children under five and internally displaced persons (IDPs), bearing the highest burden. Overcrowded IDP camps and inadequate sanitation exacerbate the spread of the disease. Despite ongoing vaccination campaigns, laboratory diagnostics, and hygiene interventions, cholera outbreaks persist, highlighting systemic ch

Rebuilding the health care system in Afghanistan: an overview of primary care and emergency services.

Developing nations have many challenges to the growth of emergency medical systems. This development in Afghanistan is also complicated by many factors that plague post-conflict countries including an unstable political system, poor economy, poor baseline health indices, and ongoing violence. Progress has been made in Afghanistan with the implementation of the Basic Package of Health Service (BPHS) by the Ministry of Public Health in an effort to provide healthcare that would have the most cost-effective impact on common health problems. Trauma and trauma-related disability were both identifie

Hospital-acquired infection poses significant clinical and economic burden worldwide. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, infection control is a young, rapidly growing specialty. An infrastructure to expedite the growth of this important discipline is fast being established. The kingdom faces unique challenges when addressing infection control, which are the subject of this review. Much of the policy-making in domestic infection control is driven by the preventive medicine concerns of the annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca, which are unparalleled. The Saudi Ministry of Health acts to contain and co

Community Engagement to Inform Multilevel Analyses of the Role of Neighborhood Factors in Cancer Control Behaviors in African Americans.

BACKGROUND: Although community engagement has had a substantial presence in public health research, community input to inform geospatial and health analyses remains underutilized and novel. This article reports on community engagement activities to solicit stakeholder perspectives on the role of neighborhood conditions in health and cancer. We discuss how this community input refined an a priori conceptual model to be tested in the larger Families, Friends, and Neighborhoods Study. METHODS: We conducted semistructured virtual interviews with 82 stakeholders (e.g., community and faith leaders,
