Sensitized chemiluminescence of CdTe quantum-dots on Ce(IV)-sulfite and its analytical applications.

Water-soluble CdTe quantum-dots (QDs) of different sizes capped with thioglycolic acid (TGA) were synthesized via a microwave-assisted method. It was found that CdTe QDs, as a kind of sensitizer, could enhance the chemiluminescence (CL) emission from the redox reaction of SO3(2-) with Ce(IV) in acidic medium. In combination with the flow injection technique, the effects of reactant concentrations, the sizes of CdTe QDs, some organic compounds, and several electron transfer proteins on the CL emission were investigated in detail. The sensitized CL displayed the size-dependent effect and increas

A new bioimaging carrier for fluorescent quantum dots: phospholipid nanoemulsion mimicking natural lipoprotein core.

Fluorescent quantum dots (semiconductor nanocrystals) have the potential to revolutionize biological imaging, but their use has been limited by difficulties in obtaining quantum dots that are water soluble and biocompatible. The objectives of our research were to develop a methodology for encapsulation of cadnium-selenium (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) in phospholipid nanoemulsion that mimics the natural lipoprotein core and to study their interactions with cultured non-small cell lung cancer cells (NSCLC). We found that CdSe QDs can be efficiently encapsulated in the phospholipid nanoemulsion. The…

Differences in subcellular distribution and toxicity of green and red emitting CdTe quantum dots.

Quantum dots (QDs) are emerging as alternative or complementary tools to the organic fluorescent dyes currently used in bioimaging. QDs hold several advantages over conventional fluorescent dyes including greater photostability and a wider range of excitation/emission wavelengths. However, recent work suggests that QDs exert deleterious effects on cellular processes. This study examined the subcellular localization and toxicity of cadmium telluride (CdTe) QDs and pharmacological means of preventing QD-induced cell death. The localization of CdTe QDs was found to depend upon QD size. CdTe QDs e…

(CdSe)ZnS quantum dots and organophosphorus hydrolase bioconjugate as biosensors for detection of paraoxon.

In this paper, we first report a novel biosensor for the detection of paraoxon based on (CdSe)ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) and an organophosphorus hydrolase (OPH) bioconjugate. The OPH was coupled to (CdSe)ZnS core-shell QDs through electrostatic interaction between negatively charged QDs surfaces and the positively charged protein side chain and ending groups (-NH2). Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy showed no significant change in the secondary structure of OPH after the bioconjugation, which indicates that the activity of OPH was preserved. Detectable secondary structure changes wer…

Reversible Quantum Dot-Driven Multiplex Technology for In Situ Subcellular Structure Imaging.

Traditional immunofluorescence methods and organic fluorescent dyes can achieve localized staining analysis of organelle structures, but they often face challenges, such as fluorescence signal quenching, limited detection throughput, and complex antibody modification. To address these issues, we developed ssDNA-quantum dot imaging encoding (ssQIE), an in situ imaging method that combines quantum dots with DNA nanotechnology. This method, which uses ssDNA labels to modify antibodies and captures quantum dot-DNA coupled complexes instead of traditional organic fluorescent dye signals, shows sign…

Control of the photoluminescence bandwidth of ZnTeSe quantum dots by suppressing the Te cluster effect.

The spatial confinement of Te to the most localized location was found to be critical for achieving narrow energy transitions in ZnTeSe quantum dots. In this study, the Te cluster effect in ZnTeSe QDs was suppressed through localizing the Te dopant at the center of the QD core, producing photoluminescence (PL) at 531 nm with a bandwidth as narrow as 39 nm and a quantum yield (QY) of 89%. It was confirmed that broader emission was observed when Te was distributed over the entirety or near the surface of ZnTeSe QDs than when it was confined to the center region. This suggests that concentrating …

Colloidal Quantum Dot Electrochemiluminescence: From Confined Excitons to Mechanism-Guided Bioanalysis.

Quantum dots (QDs) represent distinctive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emitters whose excited-state properties can be engineered through quantum confinement, shell architecture, surface ligands, and interfacial chemistry. Thanks to their size-tunable emission, narrow spectral bandwidth, high brightness, and structurally engineerable excited-state landscape, QD ECL is attractive for ultrasensitive bioanalysis, multiplexed detection, and imaging-based analysis. Over the past two decades, QD ECL has evolved from defect-state-dominated demonstrations to a design-driven research field integrating …

Symmetry-free quantum-dot metasurfaces realize arbitrary polarization-direction emission.

Emission from quantum dots (QDs) is inherently broadband, isotropic, and unpolarized, exhibiting poor spatial and temporal coherence that largely limits their applications in directional and polarization-controlled light sources. While resonant metasurfaces supporting symmetry-protected BICs can enhance emission through high-Qradiative resonances near the BIC in momentum space, their rigid symmetries confine emission to fixed directions and polarization states, preventing robust emission control. Here, we overcome the symmetry-imposed limitations by introducing a symmetry-free resonant metasur…

Light-Driven Quantum Dot Dialogues: Oscillatory Photoluminescence in Langmuir-Blodgett Films.

This study explores the optical properties of a close-packed monolayer composed of core/shell-alloyed CdSeS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) of two different sizes and compositions. The monolayers were self-assembled in a stacked configuration at the water/air interface using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) techniques. Under continuous 532 nm laser illumination on the red absorption edge of the blue-emitting smaller QDs (QD450), the red-emitting larger QDs (QD645) exhibited oscillatory temporal dynamics in their photoluminescence (PL), characterized by a pronounced blueshift in the emission peak wavelength and a…

Recent Advancements in Graphene Quantum Dot-Based Bioimaging and Drug Delivery Systems.

Due to their unique physicochemical, optical, and electronic properties, traditional quantum dots (QDs) have been used for various optoelectronic applications, including semiconductor lasers, photodetectors, transistors, and solar cells. However, unlike other traditional QDs, graphene quantum dots (GQDs), nanosized graphene sheets that possess edge effects and quantum confinement along with a collective structural feature of graphene, have shown less toxicity and desirable biocompatibility, making them an appropriate part of the carbon family for use in biomedical applications. This review art…

Immunofluorescence Rapid Analysis of Bisphenol A in Water Based on Magnetic Particles and Quantum Dots.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used as a hardener in plastics production and its release and circulation in ecosystems lead to negatively impacts the human endocrine system. Therefore, there is a need for simple and efficient BPA monitoring tools. This paper presents a combination of two approaches for this purpose: the use of magnetic particles (MPs) as antibody carriers and immunochromatographic test strips based on quantum dots (QDs) for recording labeled immune complexes. Initially, free antigen binds to the MP-specific antibody conjugate, concentrating the sample to a final volume of 200 µL.…

Gold-Graphene Quantum Dot Hybrid Nanoparticle for Smart Diagnostics of Prostate Cancer.

Prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers afflicting men worldwide, often detected at advanced stages, leading to increased mortality rates. Addressing this challenge, we present an innovative approach employing electrochemical biosensing for early-stage prostate cancer detection. This study used Indium-Tin Oxide (ITO) as a substrate and a deposited gold-graphene quantum dot (Au-GQD) nanohybrid to establish electrochemical sensing platforms for DNA-hybridization assays. A capturing DNA probe, PCA3, was covalently immobilized on the surface of the Au-GQDs and deposited electrochemica

Antibacterial Activity of CdTe/ZnS Quantum Dot-β Lactum Antibiotic Conjugates.

β-Lactum antibiotics are broad class of antibiotics which kills bacteria by inhibiting the formation of peptidoglycan that constitutes the bacterial cell wall. The resistance that develops in bacteria for antibiotics led the scientific world to think about the future aspects for modifying the way through which antibiotics are acted on the bacteria and become lethal for them. In this consequence, the potential of latest marketed antibiotics e.g. Amoxiciline (I), ceftazidim (II) have been evaluated after being conjugated with quantum dots. The surface of quantum dots has been conjugated with ant…

A review of pulmonary toxicity of different types of quantum dots in environmental and biological systems.

Quantum dots (QDs) are nanoparticles with a particle size of 1-10 nm. Typical QDs are made of compounds such as cadmium sulfide, cadmium selenide, silver sulfide, and indium phosphide, among others. QDs exhibit promising potential for a wide range of applications owing to their excellent optical properties. With the rise in the application of and demand for QDs, QDs accumulation in the environment has increased markedly. QDs enter the pulmonary system via inhalation and trigger pulmonary toxicity. This paper first reviews the pulmonary toxicity of different types of QDs in vivo and in vitro. R…

Fluorescence and Optical Activity of Chiral CdTe Quantum Dots in Their Interaction with Amino Acids.

Ligand-induced chirality in semiconducting nanocrystals has been the subject of extensive study in the past few years and shows potential applications in optics and biology. Yet, the origin of the chiroptical effect in semiconductor nanoparticles is still not fully understood. Here, we examine the effect of the interaction with amino acids on both the fluorescence and the optical activity of chiral semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). A significant fluorescence enhancement is observed for l/d-Cys-CdTe QDs upon interaction with all the tested amino acids, indicating suppression of nonradiative pat…

The NLRP3-Mediated Neuroinflammatory Responses to CdTe Quantum Dots and the Protection of ZnS Shell.

INTRODUCTION: Since CdTe quantum dots (QDs) are still widely considered as advanced fluorescent probes because of their far superior optical performance and fluorescence efficiency over non-cadmium QDs, it is important to find ways to control their toxicity. METHODS: In this study, the adverse effects of two cadmium-containing QDs, ie, CdTe QDs and CdTe@ZnS QDs, on the nervous system of nematode C. elegans, the hippocampus of mice, and cultured microglia were measured in order to evaluate the neuroinflammation caused by cadmium-containing QDs and the potential mechanisms. RESULTS: Firstly, w…

Rapid detection of brucellosis using a quantum dot-based immunochromatographic test strip.

Novel diagnostic tools are a major challenge for brucellosis research, especially in developing countries. Herein, we established a handheld quantum dot (QD) immunochromatographic device for the fast detection of brucellosis antibodies in the field. Total bacterial protein extracted from Brucella 104M served as labelling and coating antigen. QD labelling and immunochromatography methods were used to optimise reaction conditions, labelling conditions, reaction temperature and storage temperature. QD test strips were employed to test brucellosis serum to determine their sensitivity, specificity
