Simulating COVID-19 lockdowns' impact on depressive symptoms in the northern Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, a major challenge for policymakers was finding the balance between containing outbreaks and supporting mental health. Although lockdowns slowed COVID-19 transmission, it appears that they also increased the prevalence of depressive symptoms. It is not yet clear whether different, hypothetical lockdown scenarios would have differently impacted the prevalence of depressive symptoms. METHODS: To that end, we developed an open-source microsimulation model, COMMA (COvid Mental health Model with Agents). With COMMA, we explored how lock down sce

Behind the screens: perceived impact of COVID-19 on education and the learning environment among school-aged children in the Philippines.

For school-aged children and their families in the Philippines, nationwide quarantine restrictions implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in one of the longest school closures globally; schools re-opened to in-person learning nearly 2.5 years after the initial closure. We aimed to explore the experiences of students aged 8–17 years, their caregivers, and local stakeholders during this time and understand the impact these extended closures had on students’ academic and social development. From June-November 2023, we conducted focus group discussions (FGD) among students aged 12–17 yea…

US Public School Operations During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Scoping Review.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the sudden closure of schools and a transition to remote learning across the United States. The suspension of i … ematic analysis, we found that masking, ventilation, physical distancing, testing, contact tracing, quarantine and isolation, and vaccination interventions allowed schools to safely conduct in-person learning during the pandemic. Findings from the literature suggest that there are suitable mitigation measures that allowed for the safe operation of public sch …

Impact of nonpharmaceutical interventions on infectious disease patterns in Yunnan Province across the COVID-19 pandemic phases.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic substantially altered global infectious disease patterns. Nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs)—including lockdowns, travel restrictions, and enhanced hygiene—were widely implemented to control SARS-CoV-2 but also influenced the transmission of other infectious diseases. This study assessed the impact of NPIs on 36 notifiable diseases in Yunnan Province, China, across three phases: the prepandemic period (2014–2019), the pandemic phase (2020–2022), and the postpandemic phase (2023), when most NPIs were lifted. METHODS: We analyzed surveillance data from the Y

WHO's pandemic response recommendations after COVID-19: lessons learned or learnings lost?

OBJECTIVES: This article examines how the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommendations and guidelines on public health and social measu … ions, often without systematic evidence assessment. Several population-wide interventions including quarantine, travel measures, and universal masking have become normalized in post-COVID documents, despite being previously discouraged. When evidence is cited, it often pertains to narrowly defined short-term outcomes, with limited consideration of broader so …

Impact of adherence and stringency on the effectiveness of lockdown measures: A modelling study.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns were a widely used strategy to reduce disease transmission. However, there was much debate about the optimal level of strictness and duration of lockdowns. This study considers how lockdowns impact public health opinions, which in turn influence adherence to and effectiveness of these measures. We developed an agent-based simulation model to theoretically explore the impact of health-related opinions on the effectiveness of lockdowns in controlling disease spread. We simulated these dynamics within a hypothetical population connected via a simplified con

[The impact of alcohol and other psychoactive substance use during the covid-19 pandemic: problems and consequences].

This article discusses issues related to the use of surfactants during the COVID-19 pandemic. The global nature of this crisis has had a significant impact on the lives of people around the world, including their mental health. The introduction of quarantine and «isolation» measures have become one of the measures to control the spread of the disease, but such restrictions have led to various adverse psychological reactions such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as cases of self-mutilation and even suicide. All of these factors can negatively affect other aspects …

Evaluation of Seasonal Respiratory Virus Activity Before and After the Statewide COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place Order in Northern California.

IMPORTANCE: Public health initiatives that include shelter-in-place orders are expensive and unpopular. Demonstrating the success of these initiatives is essential to justify their systemic or individual cost. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of a shelter-in-place order with lower rates of seasonal respiratory viral activity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study with interrupted time series analysis obtained monthly counts of respiratory virus testing results at UC Davis Health from August 1, 2014, to July 31, 2020. Patients of all ages underwent testing conducted by the

Impact of Personal Protection Habits on the Spread of Pandemics: Insights from an Agent-Based Model.

BACKGROUND: After several waves of spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries around the world are struggling to regain their economies by slowly lifting mobility restrictions and social distance measures applied during the crisis. Meanwhile, recent studies provide compelling evidence on how contact distancing, the use of face masks, and handwashing habits can reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. In this context, we investigated the effect that these personal protection habits can have in preventing new waves of contagion. METHODS: We extended an agent-based COVID-19 epidemic model in

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on clinical research in hospitals: observational study in the first epicenter of the epidemic during the general lockdown in France.

Angelica amurensis has traditionally been used to treat various medical problems. In this report, we introduce cis-khellactone as a new anti-cancer agent, which was isolated from the chloroform soluble fraction of the rhizomes of Angelica amurensis. Its anti-cancerous effect was at first tested in MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cell lines, in which MCF7 is well known to be resistant to many anti-cancer drugs; MCF10A normal breast cell line was used as a control. In vitro experiments showed that cis-khellactone suppressed cell growth and proliferation at a relatively low concentrations (<5 μg/ml) a

Use of an electronic pillbox to increase number of methadone take-home doses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study describes use of the commercially available Medminder electronic pillbox at a community substance use disorder treatment program to safely increase the number of methadone take-home doses administered during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pillbox contains 28 cells that lock independently and can be opened only during preprogrammed time windows. This study provided patients (n = 42) deemed vulnerable to take-home mismanagement or more severe symptoms from COVID-19 infection the pillbox and observed them for 11 weeks. A telephone support line was staffed daily to manage technical issues.
