Exposure to ionizing radiation is associated with a long-term risk of health effects, including cancer. Radiation exposure to the U.S. population from cardiac imaging has increased markedly over the past three decades. Initiatives to reduce radiation exposure have focused on the tenets of appropriate study "justification" and "optimization" of imaging protocols. This article reviews ways to optimally reduce radiation dose across the spectrum of cardiac imaging.

Radiation-induced dysphonia can develop after radiation for primary laryngeal cancer or when the larynx is in the radiation field for nonlaryngeal malignancy. The effects are dose dependent and lead to variable degrees of dysphonia in both short- and long-term follow-up. Rehabilitation of the irradiated larynx can prove frustrating but can be facilitated through behavioral, pharmacologic, or surgical interventions.

Excessive exposure to UV radiation is the most significant known risk factor for skin cancer. Solarium devices produce UVA radiation that is 5 to 10 times stronger than that produced by the sun. All wavelengths of UV radiation cause DNA damage to skin cells and cause tanning. Tanning protects skin cells from further damage. The DNA damages caused by UVA and UVB radiation, however, differ from each other. The protective capacity of tanning caused by UVA radiation seems to be lower than that caused by UVB radiation.

The appearance of localized acne or comedo reaction during or shortly after radiotherapy is an unusual adverse event, but one that is probably underestimated. It can manifest as an inflammatory (papules, pustules, nodules), comedonal (open and closed comedones, Favre-Racouchot-like syndrome), or mixed presentation. We report two new cases of radiation-induced acne with different clinical aspects and discuss the main known features of this adverse event.

Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis, often associated with underlying systemic diseases. Treatment usually consists of topics and sometimes systemic immunosuppression.
